After a second half collapse in the Big Ten Championship game, the Wisconsin defense did a number on Western Michigan’s high-flying offense and the Badgers pulled out a 24-16 win over the Broncos in the Cotton Bowl on Monday afternoon.

The eighth ranked Badgers finished their season at 11-3, winning their third straight bowl game and second in a row under Paul Chryst.   Number-14 Western Michigan saw their perfect season come to an end, falling to 13-1.

Senior Bart Houston got the start at quarterback and completed 11 of 12 passes for 159 yards.  His only incompletion came when tight end Troy Fumagali dropped a pass in the end zone.  But Fumagali made up for it, catching six passes for 83 yards and a touchdown from Alex Hornibrook.  Fumagali was named the games most outstanding offensive player. Hornibrook says concussion symptoms kept him out of Big Ten title game

December 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

Alex Hornibrook

Wisconsin redshirt freshman quarterback Alex Hornibrook said he was forced to sit out the Big Ten Championship game because of concussion related symptoms.

Hornibrook was knocked out of the Badgers regular season finale against Minnesota a week earlier because of a first half concussion.

Hornibrook was cleared to practice a few days later and thought he was going to play against Penn State.  After practicing three days, Hornibrook began experiencing symptoms and talked with head coach Paul Chryst the morning of the game.  A decision at that time was made to sit Hornibrook and go with senior Bart Houston. Hornibrook practices Tuesday with the Badgers

November 30, 2016 By Bill Scott

bucky-badger-logoIt would appear that Paul Chryst will have both of his quarterbacks ready to go for Saturday night’s Big Ten Championship game between Wisconsin and Penn State.

Redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook, who has started all nine Big Ten games for the Badgers this season, suffered an apparent concussion in the regular season finale against Minnesota.  But Hornibrook practiced on Tuesday.

Hornibrook took over for senior Bart Houston, who started the first three games.  Houston is expected to get some time on Saturday as well, after getting several opportunities throughout the course of the season.

The Wisconsin Badgers knew they would be playing for the Big Ten Championship before they took the field against the Minnesota Gophers on Saturday.  The first half may have looked like that as the Badgers trailed 17-7 at halftime.

But the Wisconsin defense, which has engulfed opponents all season long, did it again in the second half against the Gophers.  The Badgers rallied for a 31-17 win over the Gophers.

The Badgers (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) knocked off Minnesota (8-5, 5-4) for the 13th straight season, will now face Penn State in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Penn State (10-2, 8-1) beat Michigan State, 45-12, on Saturday.

Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner passed for 111 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 60 yards as the Gophers were jumping all over the Badgers in the first half. [Read more…]

Badgers survive upset bid by Georgia State

September 18, 2016 By Bill Scott

alex-hornibrookThe Wisconsin Badgers went into Saturday’s game against Georgia State as 34 1/2 point favorites.  The outcome was much different from what was anticipated.

Wisconsin’s defense was stellar as usual in the first half, but the Badgers managed a 6-0 lead at the break.

The Badgers came out of the locker room and increased that lead to 13-0, after Paul Chryst pulled quarterback Bart Houston for redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook.

It was at that point that the Panthers scored a pair of touchdowns and jumped out in front 17-13 early in the fourth quarter.

Georgia State used a quick passing game and didn’t allow the Badger pass rushers to make an impact.

The Badgers were able to regain the lead when Hornibrook tossed a short touchdown pass.  They would add a Rafael Gaglianone field goal and then get a big defensive stop to hang on for the win. [Read more…]

The Wisconsin Badgers improved to 2-0 on the young season, rolling to a 54-10 win over the Akron Zips in the home opener at Camp Randall Stadium.

Corey Clement left the game late in the first half with a minor injury and didn’t return.  Clement rushed 21 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns in the win.  A week earlier, Clement rushed 21 times for 87 yards against LSU with a touchdown.

The Badgers made a big improvement on third downs.  After converting 3 of 15 third-down opportunities against LSU, Wisconsin rebounded to convert 10 of 14 third-down opportunities against Akron.

Quarterback Bart Houston also improved from his week one performance against LSU.  He started a bit slow against Akron, but in the end, Houston completed 15 of 22 for 231 yards and two touchdowns. [Read more…]

The 1oth-ranked Wisconsin Badgers play their home opener on Saturday afternoon, taking on the Akron Zips in a 2:30 p.m. kickoff at Camp Randall Stadium.

The Badgers are looking to improve in the ball security department after turning the ball over three times against LSU in the opener.  Two of the three turnovers came off interceptions from senior quarterback Bart Houston.  The first came in the end zone, which took points away from the Badgers.  The other was returned for a touchdown, which gave points to the other team.

Houston won the starting battle late in training camp over redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook.  Take away the two picks and Houston looked good in leading the Badger offense.  Now, the Badger coaches will be looking for him to clean up the turnovers this week. [Read more…]

Vince Biegel led the Badgers defense to upset win over LSU

Vince Biegel led the Badgers defense to upset win over LSU

When the new top 25 polls come out this week, don’t be surprised if the Wisconsin Badgers climb into the top ten.

The Badgers have been told all summer that the schedule they face is too difficult.  The first chance to show people that they can play with the best teams in college football came on Saturday at Lambeau Field and it was Wisconsin that prevailed, 16-14 over 5th ranked LSU.

The Badgers jumped out to a 13-0 lead, despite squandering several scoring opportunities as they dominated the Tigers on both sides of the ball.

But the Tigers came charging back, taking a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Badgers had what appeared to be one final chance, although they would have plenty of time on the clock.  They drove beyond mid-field but seemed to be playing for a go-ahead field goal try, instead of pushing the envelope and trying to score a touchdown. [Read more…]

Wisconsin and LSU, the wait is over (AUDIO)

September 3, 2016 By Bill Scott

Motion WQuarterback Bart Houston’s long wait is over.  Houston will start his first game at quarterback for the Wisconsin Badgers today, when they square off against the LSU Tigers in their season opener at Lambeau Field (2:30 p.m.).

Houston, who was named after former Green Bay Packers quarterback Bart Starr, will take to the field where Starr became famous.

Houston beat out red shirt freshman Alex Hornibrook in a close battle for the job.  Now he begins his quest to see if he can lead Badgers to an upset in today’s opener.  Wisconsin enters the game double digit underdogs (10 1/2 pts.).

But Wisconsin certainly doesn’t want to put everything on the back of Houston.  To have a chance to beat the Tigers, the Badgers will have to run the football effectively, which then opens up play action.  And on defense, Wisconsin will have to effectively handle LSU tailback Leonard Fournette, who many believe is the best back in all of college football. Wisconsin Badgers head football coach Paul Chryst has named fifth-year senior Bart Houston the teams starting quarterback to open the season against LSU on September 3 at Lambeau Field.

Houston has played in 15 games in three seasons at Wisconsin, but the season opener against LSU, will be his first collegiate start.

Overall, Houston has completed 29 of 51 for 295 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in three seasons for the Badgers.  His most extensive playing time came last season at Illinois when Houston replaced the injured Joel Stave and led the Badgers to a 24-13 win. [Read more…]
