Brewers crush Braves 13-1

July 17, 2019 By [email protected]

Christian Yelich Celebrates

Christian Yelich clubbed a grand slam, Brandon Woodruff went 6.2 strong innings and the Brewers made up for some poor play of late by crushing the Atlanta Braves 13-1 Tuesday night at Miller Park.

The Brewers pounded out 13 hits and also got home runs from Lorenzo Cain and Keston Huira.  Woodruff improved to 11-3 by giving up just the one run.  A six run seventh inning opened up the game.

Milwaukee remains 2 1/2 games behind the Chicago Cubs in the NL Central.  They host the Braves in the rubber match of the series on Wednesday afternoon, with Chase Anderson throwing against Dallas Kuechel.

Brewers drop series opener to Braves

The Milwaukee Brewers lost for the 18th time in 27 games with a 4-2 setback to the Atlanta Braves on Monday night at Miller Park.

The script was written differently in the loss, as the Brewers got solid pitching but little offense.  Adrian Houser allowed four runs and eight hits in his six innings, and manager Craig Counsell said afterwards Houser threw the ball well.  The bullpen, which has struggled of late, didn’t allow a run over three innings.

However, lefty Max Fried shut the Brewers out over five innings as the Atlanta starter, and the Brewers only runs came in the sixth off middle reliever Josh Tomlin.  Keston Huira went 3-for-4 and was a home run shy of the cycle.  Christian Yelich added two hits.

The Brewers are 48-47 but trail first place Chicago in the NL Central by just 2 1/2 games after the Cubs lost in Cincinnati.  Tuesday night will see Brandon Woodruff throw for the Brewers against Bryce Wilson.

Cincinnati – The Brewers bullpen let a 4-2 seventh inning lead get away Tuesday night and fell to the Cincinnati Reds, 5-4.

Milwaukee led 4-2 through six innings thanks to more home runs, as Christian Yelich, Mike Moustakas and Eric Thames all went deep off Reds starter Tanner Roark.  It was in support of starter Chase Anderson, who allowed two runs over 5.2 innings and just 72 pitches.

Freddie Peralta allowed a run over 1.1 innings, and Cincinnati tied it with a two out RBI double from Joey Votto in the eighth off Matt Albers.

The Reds winning run scored in the eleventh.  With two outs Yasiel Puig singled to center.  Jose Iglesias singled to right, sending Puig to third.  Yelich’s throw to the infield short hopped Thames at first base, as the ball bounced off his glove and rolled through the infield.  Puig took off and scored from third to give the Reds a 5-4 win.

Yelich’s homer was his 31st.  Moustakas’s was his 24th.  The Brewers are 45-40 and lead the Cubs by a game in the N. L. Central

14 Former Mallards Selected in 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft

June 6, 2019 By [email protected]

MADISON, Wis. – 14 former Madison Mallards will continue their baseball dreams into the professional ranks after being chosen in the 2019 MLB First-Year Player Draft. No team in the competing Great Lakes West division had more former players selected than the Mallards.

“That’s what it’s all about for me – strictly,” Mallards’ manager Donnie Scott said. “That’s what I’m here for, I want to try and help these guys prepare for pro ball and hopefully they get the opportunity.”

Tyler Dyson (2017) was the first Mallard off the board. The Florida product was selected 153rd overall by the Washington Nationals in the fifth round. Dyson pitched for the Mallards during the 2017 season and finished with a perfect 4-0 record on the mound with a stellar 1.58 ERA. Dyson also picked up a win during the 2017 Major League Dreams Showcase in Madison that year. [Read more…]

Brewers Avoid Sweep with 5-1 Win

June 6, 2019 By [email protected]

Freddy Peralta

The Brewers got six strong innings from Freddy Peralta and three home runs in support of a 5-1 victory over the Miami Marlins Thursday afternoon at Miller Park.

Mike Moustakas hit two home runs, and Christian Yelich one.  Yelich went 3-for-4 and is now batting .328 this season.  Josh Hader struck out three batters in an inning and a third, and got out of a bases loaded jam in the eighth inning.

Miami had won the first two games in the series by a combined score of 24-3, and the Brewers win puts them into a virtual tie with the Cubs for the N.L. Central lead.

The Brewers are now 35-28 and host the Pirates Friday through Sunday.
