Brewers rally to beat Diamondbacks

July 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

After trailing early 4-0, the Milwaukee Brewers rallied for a 7-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix on Sunday.

Tyler Saladino clubbed a fourth inning grand slam for the Brewers to even the score 4-4.  Then Mike Moustakas’ go-ahead, RBI-single ignited a three-run eighth inning to pull out the win.

Yasmani Grandal and Ben Gamel also plated runs in the eighth inning.  Keston Hiura got the rally started with an opposite-field triple into the right-field corner.

Freddy Peralta picked up the victory and Josh Hader nailed down his 22nd save.

Brewers all-Star starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff left after three-plus innings with a strained left oblique and is headed for the 10-day injured list.

The Brewers moved to within two games of the division leading Cubs, who lost 5-1 to the San Diego Padres on Sunday.

Now Milwaukee returns home to open a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park tonight.  Chase Anderson (5-2, 3.96 ERA) goes for the Brewers.  Right-hander Sonny Gray (5-6, 3.40) goes for the Reds.

Starting pitching continues to struggle as Brewers fall to Mariners

June 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Adrian Houser had been spectacular out of the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen, putting together a 1.05 ERA over a total of 14 outings.  But things didn’t go well for Houser in a starting role as the Brewers fell to the Seattle Mariners 4-2 on Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Houser made it through just two innings, allowing three runs on four hits with three walks in suffering the loss.

Brewers starters have compiled a 6.81 ERA in the month of June and it’s led to a 10-12 record for the month. [Read more…]

Brewers sweep Pirates with late-Sunday rally

June 10, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mike Moustakas

The Milwaukee Brewers erased a 2-0 deficit and went on to beat Pittsburgh 5-2 at Miller Park on Sunday, pulling out a sweep of the Pirates with their fourth straight win.

Christian Yelich started the comeback in the sixth with his Major League leading 24th home run of the season.  Ben Gamel followed with a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh.  Mike Moustakas clubbed a two run homer, his 20th of the season and Orlando Arcia added a sac fly in the eighth to lift the Brewers.

Moustakas entered the game having gone just 3 for 21 (.143) with one double against Liriano over the course of his career.  Overall, Moustakas raised his average to .275 with 20 homers and 43 RBI.  In his last 15 games, he’s hitting .344 with nine homers and 14 RBI.

Moustakas also won a season ticket holder (Mark Gruber) a car when his home run struck the roof of a Toyota RAV4 parked in right-center field.

Moustakas and Yelich are two of only four players that have reached 20 or more home runs at this point in the season. [Read more…]

May 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff has been locked in on the strike zone, striking out 10 and walking nobody in a 9-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Woodruff allowed just one hit, a sixth inning solo home run off the bat of Philadelphia’s Andrew Knapp in the sixth inning.  He pitched eight innings to improve to 7-1, never once pitching out of the stretch on Sunday.

Ben Gamel clubbed two of the Brewers five home runs.  Christian Yelich hit his 21st home run.  Hernan Perez and Yasmani Grandal also went deep for the Brewers. [Read more…]

Solo HR’s lift Brewers to victory

May 20, 2019 By Bill Scott

Three solo home runs gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 3-2 win in 10 innings over the Atlanta Braves on Sunday.  The Brewers salvaged the final game of the series after losses on Friday and Saturday nights.

Christian Yelich homered in the first inning, his league leading 190th of the season.  Rookie Keston Huira added  his first major league home run in the fifth and Ben Gamel clubbed the game winner in the 10th.

The Brewers lost in 10 innings on Saturday night when Freddie Freeman homered off of Josh Hader.  This time, Hader closed the door on the Braves in the 9th and 10th to secure the win and a 5-5 road trip. [Read more…]

Brewers blank Nationals for fifth straight win

May 8, 2019 By Bill Scott

Lorenzo Cain – File Photo / Bill Greenblatt UPI

Lorenzo Cain broke a scoreless tie with a three-run double off of Stephen Strasburg in the seventh inning to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 6-0 win over the Washington Nationals at Miller Park.

Adrian Houser made his second spot start of the season for the Brewers, but this time his outing was only to get the ball rolling before giving way to Freddy Peralta.  Houser pitched two scoreless innings and Peralta followed with five scoreless frames for the win.

The Brewers employed the pitching strategy after Peralta gave up nine runs in four innings in his last start.  He improved to 2-1 with the win.

Strasburg (3-2) struck out 11 before the Brewers got him in the seventh.  They scored all six of their runs in that frame.

Cain’s double ended the night for Strasburg and reliever Dan Jennings gave up an RBI single to Mike Moustakas.  The Brewers then added two more runs in the seventh on Ben Gamel’s bases-loaded walk and Jesus Aguilar’s RBI single off Justin Miller.

The Brewers and Nationals wrap up their three-game series this afternoon at Miller Park.  Brandon Woodruff (4-1, 4.71 ERA) gets the nod for the Brewers.  Jeremy Hellickson (2-0, 5.33) goes for the Nationals, who have dropped three straight.

Brewers grind for series opening win

May 7, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers picked up their fourth straight win on Monday night, coming from behind to beat Washington 5-3 at Miller Park.

The Nationals jumped out in front with two in the first when Howie Kendrick clubbed a two-run homer off of Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin.

Mike Moustakas singled to drive in Ben Gamel in the bottom of the first to cut the lead in half.  The Brewers would tie the game 2-2 in the second and it would stay that way until the 7th inning when Adam Eaton clubbed a solo homer off of Brewers reliever Alex Claudio to give the Nationals a 3-2 lead.

The Brewers came right back in the bottom half with two runs and Gamel drove in an insurance run with a single in the ninth.  Gamel finished the night with three hits.

Freddy Peralta will pitch in game two of the series for the Brewers tonight, but he won’t start.  Because of his early struggles, the Brewers will start reliever Adrian Houser and at some point, bring Peralta into the game.

Brewers scramble, fall to Rockies

May 2, 2019 By Bill Scott

Chase Anderson File Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

The Milwaukee Brewers found out less than hour before Wednesday night’s game against Colorado that starting pitcher Chase Anderson ripped open a callus on his right middle finger, sending him to the injured list.  That put the team in scramble mode as they needed to formulate a pitching plan for the night, minus Anderson.

Manager Craig Counsell handed the ball to reliever Jacob Barnes to start with and things went downhill from there.  Barnes walked the first two batters and Nolan Arenado followed with a three-run homer to center field, on the way to a 11-4 Colorado victory.

Arenado tacked on a solo homer in the ninth for his eighth home run of the season.  Trevor Story also clubbed a three-run homer for the Rockies.

Mike Moustakas hit a two-run homer for Milwaukee, and Ben Gamel added two hits and two RBI. [Read more…]

Aguilar’s bat leads Brewers past Rockies

May 1, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jesus Aguilar homers for the Brewers

After entering the series against Colorado without a home run, first baseman Jesus Aguilar clubbed his third home run in the last two games to power the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 win over the Rockies on Tuesday night at Miller Park.

With the Brewers leading 1-0 in the seventh, Aguilar clubbed a three-run shot to put Milwaukee up 4-0.  It turns out the Brewers would need those runs, seeing the Rockies score three times in the 9th and falling a run short.  Josh Hader came on to slam the door and earn his seventh save of the season.

The rest of the game was a pitching duel between Jhoulys Chacin and Rockies right-hander German Marquez.

Marquez didn’t allow a base runner until the sixth inning, when Ben Gamel led off the inning with a double.  Orlando Arcia’s bunt single put runners at first and third and nobody out.  Ryan Braun followed with a double play ground out, but Gamel scored on the play to give the Brewers the first run of the game.

Chacin entered the game with a 2-3 record and a 6.35 ERA, but he had his “A” game on Tuesday night.  He allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings to earn his third win.

Chase Anderson (2-0, 3.20) pitches game three of the four game series for the Brewers.  Antonio Senzatela (2-1, 3.93) goes for the Rockies.
