Two years ago, Ben McAdoo was the quarterbacks coach of the Green Bay Packers.  Today, McAdoo could become the next head coach of the New York Giants.

The 38-year-old McAdoo spent the last two seasons as the Giants’ offensive coordinator and was credited for helping quarterback Eli Manning get back on track.

McAdoo would replace Tom Coughlin, who resigned after 12 years as New York’s head coach.

McAdoo was the Packers’ quarterbacks coach in 2012 and 2013 and their tight ends coach for six years before that.

Former Packers offensive coordinator and ex-Miami head coach Joe Philbin would be among the favorites to run McAdoo’s offense in New York.

Greene leaves his Packers coaching post

January 17, 2014 By Bill Scott

Outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene won’t be returning to the Green Bay Packers next season.  Greene has made the decision to leave after coaching outside linebackers for five years.

In a statement through the team, Green said he wanted to spend more time with his family.  It’s unclear if Green’s contract wasn’t going to be renewed, or if he was being fired.

In a news release put out by the Packers organization, coach Mike McCarthy said that Greene approached him recently about

leaving coaching temporarily.

“I am stepping away from the NFL at this time to spend more time with my wife, Tara, and our children, Gavin and Gabrielle,” Greene said.  “I will miss coaching and will try to return after our kids move on to college if a team will have me.

Greene has been the Packers outside linebackers coach since 2009.  He’s a finalist this year for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  As a player, he ranks No. 3 on the NFL’s all-time sack list.

Greene’s departure leaves Mike McCarthy looking for two assistant coaches this offseason.  He also has to fill the quarterbacks coaching position after Ben McAdoo left to take the offensive coordinators job with the New York Giants.

Giants about their vacant offensive coordinator position on Monday and took the job on Tuesday, replacing Kevin Gilbride, who retired Jan. 2.

McAdoo had interviewed with the Cleveland Browns for their head coaching vacancy last week.

McAdoo will be charged with turning around a Giants offense that finished 28th in yards and points.  The team’s quarterback, Peyton Manning ranked 35th in passer rating at 69.4.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has one year left on his contract and if the Giants replace him after the 2014 season, there’s a decent chance McAdoo could step into the head coaching position.

Browns today for their vacant heading position.

McAdoo was among Mike McCarthy’s original assistant hires, first coaching tight ends in Green Bay before moving to quarterbacks coach.

McAdoo is considered to be a lot like Andy Reid, who was a former Packers assistant and hired as a head coach in Philadelphia without serving as a coordinator.  But even if McAdoo doesn’t land the Browns head coaching job, there’s a good chance he’ll get a coordinators job somewhere.

Miami has a vacancy at offensive coordinator after coach Joe Philbin fired Mike Sherman there on Monday.

McAdoo has served as the Packers tight ends coach since 2006, when he came from the San Francisco 49ers along with Mike McCarthy.

McAdoo replaces Tom Clements, who was promoted to offensive coordinator after Joe Philbin took the job in Miami.

Packers block Bucs request to to with McAdoo

February 8, 2012 By Bill Scott

According to a NFL.com report, the Green Bay Packers blocked the Tampa

Ben McAdoo

Bay Buccaneers’ request to interview Ben McAdoo for their offensive coordinator position.

McAdoo, the team’s tight ends coach, is considered the favorite to replace Tom Clements as quarterbacks coach.  Clements was promoted to offensive coordinator last week by the Packers.

Aaron Rodgers, on his weekly radio show on WAUK-AM, said he hopes he’s in the loop on the decision as to who the next quarterbacks coach is in Green Bay.

Rodgers told the show’s host Jason Wilde, “Because I’m in my eighth season, it will be interesting to see what direction Mike McCarthy wants to go in, if he wants to bring in a former quarterback with experience to kind of help me with the transition into the middle part of my career a more of an established player in th e league now.  I’m not sure what the dynamic would be with a coach who hasn’t coached the position before.  But Ben is a very talented coach and if they do make that decision, I’m sure he will make a smooth transition.”
