Marquette to open NCAA Tournament against South Carolina (AUDIO)

The Marquette Golden Eagles (19-12) earned a number-10 seed in the NCAA Tournament’s East Region and will face number-7 South Carolina (22-10) on Friday in Greenville, South Carolina.

It’s the first trip to the NCAA Tournament for Marquette since 2013 and the first since Steve Wojciechowski took over the program.

Besides guard Katin Reinhardt, who made the NCAA Tournament while playing with UNLV and USC, this is the first trip for any other players on the Golden Eagles roster. [Read more…]

Marquette’s season comes to a disappointing close

MarquetteGoldenEagles2After routing Seton Hall in the opening round of the Big East Tournament in New York, the Marquette Golden Eagles came crashing back to earth, falling to 4th-ranked Villanova 84-49 in the Big East quarterfinals on Thursday.

Villanova hit 17 of 29 3-point attempts, to win their 13th straight.  The 17 three’s tied a Big East Tournament record.

Big East Sixth Man of the Year winner, Josh Hart, made his first six field goals and first five 3-point attempts.  He also helped hold Marquette sharpshooter Matt Carlino to five points.

Derrick Wilson had 11 points and nine rebounds, but also committed nine turnovers for the Golden Eagles (13-19).

Marquette women advance in Big East Tournament

The Marquette Golden Eagles hit five free throws in the final minute to knock off Villanova 56-53 in the quarterfinals of the Big East women’s basketball tournament on Sunday in Rosemont, Illinois.

Katherine Plouffe scored 14 points to lead Marquette (21-7) into tonight’s semi-finals against DePaul at 5:30pm.

Marquette starts Big East Tournament on Thursday

The Marquette Golden Eagles, fresh off their first ever Big East men’s basketball championship, will play its first game in the tournament on Thursday.  Marquette gets the late game on Thursday against either Notre Dame, Rutgers or DePaul.

The Golden Eagles (23-7, 14-4 Big East) tied their own school record for conference wins (14) with a 69-67 victory over St. John’s in overtime on Saturday.  Vander Blue’s driving lay-up as time expired gave the Golden Eagles a share of the Big East Championship with Georgetown and Louisville. Golden Eagles open play in Big East Tourney

The Marquette Golden Eagles received a double bye into the quarterfinals of the Big East mens basketball tournament tonight. 

Louisville knocked off Seton Hall 61-55 to advance to the quarterfinals and a meeting tonight against the Golden Eagles (6pm – ESPN).

Marquette (25-6, 14-4 Big East) defeated Louisville on Jan. 16, 74-63 at the Bradley Center.  The Golden Eagles overcame an 18-2 deficit at the start to finish off the Cardinals.
