7th ranked Volleyball Badgers open season with a win

The freshman duo of Sydney Hilley and Dana Rettke led the 7th ranked Wisconsin volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-19, 26-24 sweep of Louisville in the first round of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in the UW Field House on Friday night.  UW opened its season with a win for the second straight season and for the fourth time under fifth-year head coach Kelly Sheffield.

Hilley finished with 36 assists and added four kills, three digs and one block.  In Hilley’s first start running the Badger offense, Wisconsin hit .320 (42 kills – 11 errors – 97 attempts) while holding Louisville to .171 (39-21-105).

Rettke led all hitters with 15 kills while hitting .500 (15-3-24).  the 6’8 middle blocker also had a match-high six blocks.  Wisconsin outblocked the Cardinals 8-6.

Sophomore M.E. Dodge had a team-high 10 digs.

The Badgers wrap up the Challenge on Saturday night at 7:30 against 11th ranked North Carolina (0-1).  The Tarheels lost their opener last night at Minnesota.

Badger women to face Pittsburgh in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team will play at Pittsburgh on Wednesday, Nov. 29 in the 11th annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The Challenge takes place over two days in late November, beginning Nov. 29 with Iowa, Michigan, Nebraska and Rutgers playing host to ACC counterparts, while Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio State and Wisconsin venture on the road.  The following night, Illinois, Indiana and Penn State will serve as host schools, while Michigan State, Northwestern and Purdue will play at ACC sites.

Wisconsin is 5-5 in the Challenge after losing at home to North Carolina last season.

The Badgers are 1-1 all-time against the Panthers and this will be the first meeting between the two teams as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

The ACC earned last year’s Challenge title by a 9-5 count after the Big Ten and ACC played to 7-7 ties during the previous two seasons (2014 and 2015).  Last year, Maryland, Michigan, Northwestern, Penn State and Purdue registered wins for the Big Ten.

Wisconsin to meet Wake Forest in women’s challenge

WOMENS BASKETBALL LOGOThe Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball team will play at Wake Forest in the ninth annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday, Dec. 2 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

The Badgers were 9-20 in 2014-15, including a 5-13 mark in the Big Ten to finish 11th.  Coach Bobbie Kelsey returns seven letter winners and four starters, including 2014 first-team All-Big Ten pick Michala Johnson, who was recently granted a sixth year by the NCAA.  UW also returns 2015 honorable mention All-Big Ten pick Nicole Bauman, who led Wisconsin with 15.3 points per game as a junior.

Wake Forest was 13-20 in 2014-15 and 13th in the final ACC standings at 2-14.  The Demon Deacons return four starters from last season.

Wisconsin is 0-1 all-time against Wake Forest, losing to the Demon Deacons on Dec. 28, 1992, in Madison.

The Badgers are 4-4 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge after losing at Miami 66-54 last season.

The ACC has dominated the Challenge, winning six of eight seasons with two seasons ending in a tie.

Big Ten & ACC deadlocked again

For the second straight year, the Big Ten/ACC Challenge ended in a tie.  6 wins and 6 losses for both sides.

The game that kept the Big Ten from winning the Challenge took place in East Lansing, Michigan.  That’s were unranked North Carolina knocked off #1 ranked Michigan State 79-65.

Menomonee Falls standout J.P. Tokoto had 12 points and a career high 10 rebounds in the win for the Tar Heels.

On the flip side, even though Wisconsin entered the game ranked 8th in the country, Virginia was the favorite in Charlottesville.  But it was the Badgers that pulled out a 48-38 victory.

The ACC still leads the all-time series with a 10-3-2 advantage.

Badger women face Boston College in Big Ten/ACC Challenge

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team will host Boston College in the 7th annual Big

Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 5 in the Kohl Center.

The Badgers are 3-3 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and face the Eagles for the second time.  Wisconsin downed the Eagles 58-50 in the Kohl Center on Nov. 11, 2011, during coach Bobbie Kelsey’s first season.

The Badgers are 1-1 all-time against the Eagles with BC winning the first meeting 76-70 in Boston in 2003.
