For the first time in Wisconsin women’s basketball history, the Badgers will be coached by a man.  Jonathan Tsipis was introduced as the new women’s coach at Wisconsin during a news conference at the Nicholas-Johnson Pavilion on Thursday.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez said the issue of gender was not a consideration in making the selection.

“I wanted to hire the best coach we could hire,” he said.  “And I think we did that.”

Tsipis said he plans to have strong female role models on his coaching staff, which he said he hopes to have in place before the next open recruiting period in mid-April.

Tsipis met with the returning players, spoke via telephone with each of the six members of the 2016 recruiting class and made home visits to the top two players in the state for the 2017 class, Madison Edgewood’s Estella Moschkau and Kenosha St. Joseph’s Sidney Cooks. [Read more…]

After five seasons and 100 defeats, the Bobbie Kelsey era as women’s head basketball coach at Wisconsin has come to an end.

Kelsey compiled an overall record of 47-100 in her five seasons on the Badger bench, including a 19-65 mark in the Big Ten.

In a statement, Athletic Director Barry Alvarez said, “It ‘s my job and the sports administrator’s job to see the program’s progress and that they’re being run properly and that things are being done the right way.”

“Bobbie has a lot of good qualities.  Her assistants have a lot of good qualities.  They put a lot of hard work in. [Read more…]

It was another frustrating night for the Wisconsin women’s basketball team.  The Badgers dropped their fifth straight on Wednesday night, 75-62 to the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

It was the sixth straight win for Nebraska, against a Wisconsin (6-13, 2-7 Big Ten) team that has won just six games all season.

Nebraska’s Natalie Romeo had six three-pointers in the first half and finished eight-of-14 from beyond the arc for the game, giving her a 30-point night.

After the game, Wisconsin coach Bobbie Kelsey was asked about the shooting performance of the sophomore Natalie Romeo.

UW athletic board puts the heat on a pair of coaches

April 25, 2015 By Bill Scott

Mike Eaves

After tough seasons for the Wisconsin men’s hockey team and the women’s basketball team, the UW Athletic board voted to retain coaches Mike Eaves (hockey) and Bobbie Kelsey (women’s hoops), but didn’t extend their contracts.

Eaves contract expires June 30, 2019 and Kelsey’s runs through May 31, 2019.

Under Eaves, the Badger men’s hockey team finished 4-26-5 last season, the worst record in program history.  After winning an NCAA Championship in 2006 and making the title game in 2010, the Badgers have failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the third time in five seasons.

In effect, the board couldn’t reward Eaves with a contract extension after a season like last year.  Eaves also fired his two assistants, Gary Shuchuk and Matt Walsh.

Kelsey’s Badger women’s basketball team finished 5-11 in the Big Ten and 9-20 overall last season.  Since Kelsey joined the program, Wisconsin has failed to qualify for either the NCAA or the WNIT.

It’s safe to say the Athletic Board is looking for improvement from both programs or their jobs could be in jeopardy.

The board did roll over the five-year contracts of men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan and women’s hockey coach Mark Johnson.  It also rolled over the three-year deal for wrestling coach Barry Davis.

Ten/ACC Challenge on Thursday, Dec. 5 in the Kohl Center.

The Badgers are 3-3 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge and face the Eagles for the second time.  Wisconsin downed the Eagles 58-50 in the Kohl Center on Nov. 11, 2011, during coach Bobbie Kelsey’s first season.

The Badgers are 1-1 all-time against the Eagles with BC winning the first meeting 76-70 in Boston in 2003.

April 27, 2013 By Bill Scott

The UW Athletic Board met Friday afternoon and approved the recommendations of the UW Department of Athletics regarding contracts for

winter/spring sports head coaches.

There were some that thought Mike Eaves job security was at bit iffy after a slow start this past season.  But a fantastic second half finish and trip to the NCAA Tournament wiped away any speculation about Eaves future in Madison.  The UW Athletic Board extended his five-year contract through June 30, 2018.  Women’s hockey coach Mark Johnson also had his 5-year deal extended through that same date.

Men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan and women’s coach Bobbie Kelsey had their 5-year deals extended through May 31st, 2018.  Wrestling Coach Barry Davis had his three-year contract extended through May 31, 2016.  Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Coach Whitney Hite’s one-year contract was renewed through June 14, 2014.
