Brewers report to spring training headquarters today

February 17, 2021 By Bill Scott

Brett Anderson

The Milwaukee Brewers have pitchers and catchers report to their spring training headquarters in Phoenix on Wednesday with official workouts set to begin on Thursday.

Ahead of the reporting date, the Brewers added a couple of veterans.

Milwaukee is adding left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson on a one-year deal worth $2.5 million.  Anderson could make another one-million in incentives after going 4-4 with a 4.21 ERA for the Brewers last season.

The Brewers are also working on a non-roster deal with infielder Travis Shaw, who had two good seasons in Milwaukee before a bad offensive slump led to his release in 2019.  Shaw will try to win the wide-open third base job after playing for Toronto last season.

Brewers in the postseason, despite losing record

September 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

The Milwaukee Brewers could have clinched a playoff spot with a win in the regular season finale at St. Louis on Sunday.  Instead, they took the tough rout, falling to the Cardinals 5-2 and then depending on help.  They got the needed help when both Philadelphia and San Francisco both lost, giving the sub-.500 Brewers (29-31) a spot in the National League playoffs.

The Phillies 5-0 setback against Tampa Bay finished ahead of the Brewers.  But the Giants were giving the San Diego Padres a run for their money and the Brewers were watching in the clubhouse after their loss, as San Diego pulled out a 5-4 win.

The Brewers are the No. 8 seed in the National League and will face the top-seeded Los Angeles Dodgers (43-17) in a best-of-three series starting Wednesday night.

The Brewers are in and they’re not apologizing.

“We got ourselves a shot,” Manager Craig Counsell said.  “You’ve got to beat a really good team twice.  It’s the best team [Read more…]

Brewers continue playoff push, knock off Reds

September 23, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Sogard

Eric Sogard’s playing time had dwindled considerably in the past few weeks, but given an opportunity on Tuesday night, Sogard delivered to help the Milwaukee Brewers pull out a much-needed win.

Sogard doubled twice, including a shot to left that broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Brewers a 3-2 victory at Great American Ballpark.  It moved them into a wildcard playoff spot with six games left to play in the regular season.

Orlando Arcia and Tyrone Taylor also drove in runs for the Brewers.  Taylor’s came with a solo home run in the fifth.

The win also moved the Brewers into a tie with the Reds for third place in the NL Central, 5-games behind the division leading Chicago Cubs.  They’re just a half game behind the second place Cardinals, who are 4 1/2 games back.  The Cubs clinched a playoff spot, despite falling 3-2 to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Brett Anderson pitched six innings of two-run, four-hit ball to earn the win, improving to 4-3 on the season.  He recorded seven strikeouts, his highest total since Sept. 15, 2015 against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Devin Williams followed with two innings of scoreless relief, striking out five.  Josh Hader retired the Reds in the ninth for his 11th save of the season.

The Reds scored both of their runs in the first inning on a Nick Castellanos home run to center.

With the series tied 1-1, the all-important rubber game is Wednesday night.  Adrian Houser (1-5, 5.33) pitches for the Brewers, facing Cincinnati’s Trevor Bauer (4-4, 1.80).  First pitch is set for 5:40 p.m.

Brewers drop series opener to Reds

September 22, 2020 By Bill Scott

Brandon Woodruff

With one week left in the regular season and the Milwaukee Brewers having their destiny in their own hands, they dropped the series opener to the Reds 6-3 in Cincinnati on Monday night.

Luis Castillo allowed a single run on four hits over 6 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts to secure the win.  It gave the Reds (28-27) their eighth victory in the last nine games as they moved a full game in front of the Brewers (26-27) for the final wildcard berth in the National League.

The Brewers scored a single run in the fifth inning when Jedd Gyorko homered to left.  That gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead and it stayed that way until the bottom of the sixth when Eugenio Suarez homered to left off of Brewers starter Brandon Woodruff to make it 2-1 Cincinnati.

The Reds then scored four runs in the eighth off of rookie reliever Drew Rasmussen.  Reds catcher Curt Casali hit a leadoff home run and Mike Moustakas added a three-run blast to make it 6-1.

Jace Peterson clubbed a two-out, two-run homer in the 9th to make it 6-3 Reds, but the rally ended there.

Game two of the series is Tuesday night at Great American Ballpark.  Brett Anderson (3-3, 4.38) goes for the Brewers.  Sonny Gray (5-3, 3.94) gets the nod for the Reds.  First pitch is set for 5:40 p.m.

Brewers split with Cardinals, fall into 4th place in NL Central

September 15, 2020 By Bill Scott

Ryan Braun

The Milwaukee Brewers opened a 3-day, 5-game series against St. Louis, splitting a doubleheader with the Cardinals at Miller Park on Monday.

The Brewers won the series opener in comeback fashion, 2-1 in eight innings.  Ryan Braun’s run-scoring double and Keston Hiura’s sacrifice fly allowed the Brewers to climb within a game of the Cardinals for second place in the NL Central.  But St. Louis returned the favor by winning game two 3-2 in nine innings, moving back in front of the Brewers by two games for second place.  Cincinnati, which took two from the Pirates, slid past the Brewers and into third place in the division.

The Brewers struck out 16 times and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in game two.  The Brewers two runs came on a two-run homer by Jedd Gyorko in the fourth inning.

The Brewers had their hottest pitcher on the mound in game two, but Corbin Burnes ran his pitch count up and left in the 5th with 101 pitches.  The 4 2/3 innings pitched for Burnes, was his second shortest outing of the season.  But he did strikeout 10.

The Brewers had several chances in the final innings but couldn’t find a way to plate any additional runs.

In the opener, Josh Lindblom allowed just three hits and struck out six over five shutout innings, his best performance since joining the Brewers.

The Brewers and Cardinals play a single game on Tuesday night at Miller Park.  Brett Anderson (2-3, 4.64) gets the starting nod for the Brewers.  Jack Flaherty (3-1, 3.08) goes for the Cardinals.

The Brewers are 21-25 on the season with 14 games left in the regular season.

Brewers drop 2 of 3 to Indians in Cleveland

September 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

Shane Bieber struck out 10 over five innings of one-run ball as the Indians knocked off the Milwaukee Brewers 4-1 in Cleveland on Sunday.  Bieber moved to 7-0 with the victory.

Brad Hand closed it out with his 11th save.  Carlos Santana drove in two runs for the Indians, which took two-of-three in the series.

Jacob Nottingham drove in the Brewers only run.  Milwaukee has dropped three of their last five.

Brett Anderson allowed four runs in five innings to take the loss.  He dropped to 2-3.

The Brewers have Monday off and will open a two-game series in Detroit against the Tigers on Tuesday.

Brewers fall as Hader’s streak comes to an end

With the game tied 3-3 in the ninth, the Milwaukee Brewers called on their closer, Josh Hader to keep the game deadlocked.  But for the first time this season, Hader allowed a hit, in fact he allowed two as the Cleveland Indians pulled out a 4-3 win at Progressive Field.

The Indians Oscar Mercado had a leadoff double in the ninth and took third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Cesar Hernandez single to win it.

Hader hadn’t allowed a hit in his first 12 games, covering 11 2/3 innings and 47 batters.

The Brewers scored first, in the fourth inning when newcomer Daniel Vogelbach ripped a double to right to score Keston Hiura. [Read more…]

Brewers snap 4-game slide, beat Reds

August 25, 2020 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell – Photo by Bill Greenblatt/UPI

Entering Monday nights series opener against Cincinnati, the Milwaukee Brewers had been outscored 37-5 in the opening two innings of games this season.  Facing Reds starter Trevor Bauer, who entered the game with the majors best ERA at 0.68, wasn’t looking good for the Brewers.  Not to mention, Bauer allowed just one run on three hits while striking out 12 in a 8-3 Reds victory over the Brewers on August 7.

The recipe for success wasn’t a good one, but the Brewers had other ideas.

Justin Smoak’s first-inning RBI single put the Brewers up early and they would never trail in a 4-2 win over the Reds at Miller Park.  Smoak also clubbed a two-run homer, while Omar Narvaez also went deep as the Brewers had a 4-0 lead in the first four innings, on the way to victory. [Read more…]

Brewers swept by Pirates (Audio)

August 24, 2020 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

The Pittsburgh Pirates entered their three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers with just four wins (4-17) and the worst offense in baseball.  When the smoke cleared on Sunday, the Pirates had a three-game sweep, outscoring the Brewers 24-11 in the series.

The Brewers were trying to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday at PNC Park, leading 4-3 in the 8th.  That’s when Pittsburgh’s Gregory Polanco clubbed a two-run home run off of reliever David Phelps to give the Pirates a 5-4, come-from-behind win.  It was the first home run allowed by Phelps in 10 appearances this season.

Once again, the Brewers struggled out of the gates, falling behind 2-0.  They went hitless in the first three innings and have now been outscored 37-5 in the first two innings of their 26 games.

The Brewers would eventually tie it 2-2 on a run scoring double by Justin Smoak and a run scoring single  by Omar Narvaez.  They then took the lead in the sixth when Smoak clubbed a 2-run homer for a 4-2 lead. [Read more…]

Brewers power past Twins

August 20, 2020 By Bill Scott

Brett Anderson pitched six strong innings to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 9-3 win over the Minnesota Twins at Target Field on Wednesday night.

Anderson (1-2) posted his longest outing of the season, working six innings while allowing a run on five hits with five strikeouts.

The Brewers got to Twins starter Rich Hill (1-1) early, scoring four runs on four hits in the third inning.  The Brewers also put together a four run fifth to break the game open.

Ryan Braun, Christian Yelich, Avisail Garcia and Keston Hiura all homered for the Brewers.  In his past 10 games, Yelich is hitting .324 with three homers and eight RBI.

The Brewers have won 4 of their last 5 games to climb back to .500 at 11-11.  They’ll send Brandon Woodruff (1-1, 3.16 ERA) to the mound in the series finale tonight.  The Twins counter with right-hander Jose Berrios (1-3, 5.92).  Berrios has given up eight runs in 9 1/3 innings over his last two starts.
