Packers re-sign Goode at long snapper

November 15, 2017 By Bill Scott

After more issues with the kicking operation, the Green Bay Packers released long snapper Derek Hart and signed veteran Brett Goode for another go-around.

Goode suffered a hamstring injury in Week 3 and was put on injured reserve.  The Packers then worked out an injury settlement with Goode, allowing him to become a free agent.

The two sides agreed to a four-week settlement, meaning the Packers could re-sign Goode three weeks after that period ended.

The Packers had signed Taybor Pepper in his place, but Pepper landed on injured reserve as well after suffering an ankle injury in practice.

Long snapper number three was Hart, but he struggled with a handful of snaps, resulting in some continued problems in the kicking operation.

Goode doesn’t give the Packers the speed to cover punts, but his long snapping has been rock solid during his entire stay in Green Bay and the Packers could use some consistency in that area during the final seven games of the regular season.

Goode goes to IR, Packers sign Pepper

September 26, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers placed long snapper Brett Goode on injured reserve with a hamstring injury on Monday.  They signed Taybor Pepper, who had been with the Packers during the offseason, to replace Goode.

Goode suffered a hamstring early in Sunday’s game against the Bengals and is expected to sideline him for at least a couple of weeks.

The Packers tried to go with a younger player to replace Goode during the off-season.  They signed Pepper first, then released him in favor of Derek Hart.  The Packers were looking for more consistency at that position and decided to bring Goode back.

Goode could return to the Packers in eight weeks.  They can return two players from I.R. and already have Don Barclay and Jason Spriggs on injured reserve.

The question moving forward will be how will the change in long snappers affect kicker Mason Crosby.  He struggled during training camp with Derek Hart as his long snapper.  He’ll have little time to adjust with the Packers facing the Bears on Thursday night.

Packers interview controversial running back Joe Mixon

April 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

Oklahoma running back Joe Mixon was barred from attending the NFL’s scouting combine because he punched a woman in the face back in 2014.

The Green Bay Packers brought Mixon to Green Bay for an interview.  Several teams have taken Mixon off of their draft boards, but the Packers are in need of running back help and Mixon has been one of the best in college football over the past couple of seasons.

Mixon received a deferred one-year sentence and was ordered to undergo counseling.  He was also ordered to serve 100 hours of community service and was suspended for the 2014 season.

Upon his return, Mixon has put together back-to-back strong seasons and rushed for 1,274 yards and 10 [Read more…]

Schmitt breaks hand in first practice as a Packer (AUDIO)

August 10, 2016 By Bill Scott

Jesse Schmitt watches with a cast on his hand.

Jesse Schmitt watches with a cast on his hand.

The Green Bay Packers went looking for long snapper help and signed former Purdue Boilermaker Jesse Schmitt on Tuesday.  Mike McCarthy said the Packers were trying to add some competition to the position, where Rick Lovato started Training Camp as the teams only long snapper.

Schmitt had been waiting to find a job in the NFL since he graduated from Purdue in 2014.  But Schmitt’s chance in Green Bay would appear to be over just as fast as it started.  During practice on Tuesday night, Schmitt suffered a broken hand.

If the Packers weren’t totally satisfied with Lovato once, one would expect them to look for more competition again. [Read more…]

Ty Montgomery returns to practice.

Three of the five remaining P.U.P. players returned to practice with the Green Bay Packers on Tuesday night.

Linebacker Sam Barrington, wide receiver Ty Montgomery and tight end Jared Cook all passed their physical and practiced for the first time in training camp.

Only wide receiver Jordy Nelson and center Corey Linsley remain on the P.U.P. list.

Cook returned from preventative foot surgery and looked good his first time out.  Montgomery is returning from ankle surgery after playing in just six games last season. [Read more…]

Packers wrap up the practice week today

January 9, 2016 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

The Green Bay Packers wrap up the practice week with a short workout today before heading east for Sunday’s wildcard playoff game against the Washington Redskins.

The Packers listed 18 players on their injury report on Friday.  Corner Sam Shields is listed as doubtful with a concussion.

Left tackle David Bakhtiari walked without a limp in the locker room on Friday but offered no comment when asked about his availability for Sunday’s game.  He is listed as questionable on the injury report.

If Bakhtiari can’t play, Mike McCarthy said earlier in the week that Josh Sitton would stay at left guard.  It would appear to leave J.C. Tretter to play left tackle as the most likely replacement.

Masthay sets franchise mark

Punter Tim Masthay finished the regular season with a punting net average of 40.2, which ranked 14th in the NFL, but set a Packers franchise record.

Masthay’s previous best ranking in net average was 17th in 2010.  His previous best net average was 39.0 in 2013.

Goode has surgery

Long snapper Brett Goode underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL in his left knee on December 28.  His contract expires at the end of the season.  He will be an unrestricted free agent.

His replacement, rookie Rick Lovato, has a two-year minimum deal that runs through 2016.

Packers place long snapper Goode on I.R.

December 22, 2015 By Bill Scott

Packers logoThe Green Bay Packers lost their long snapper to injury.  Brett Goode was placed on Injured Reserve today and the Packers signed Rick Lovato to take his place.

Goode hurt his knee in the first quarter of the Oakland game on Sunday but finished the game.  He’s expected to undergo surgery next week.

Lovato is a rookie out of Old Dominion who originally signed with the Chicago Bears as a non-drafted free agent on May 8, 2015.  After spending the offseason and training camp with the Bears, he was released on August 31.

Lovato appeared in all 50 games for Old Dominion as the team’s long snapper from 2011-14.

Goode had played in 137 straight games during the regular and postseason for the Packers, including all 14 games this season.
