Packers sloppy play leads to third straight defeat

November 7, 2017 By Bill Scott

Mike Daniels

The Green Bay Packers issues started early and continued often in their 30-17 loss to the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football at Lambeau Field.

The Packers won the toss and unlike several previous opportunities, Mike McCarthy didn’t defer to the second half.  Maybe he knew what was ahead of him with the Packers 23rd ranked defense.

The Packers started with the football at their own 22 yard line and began to march down the field with Brett Hundley making his second NFL start.  Fifteen plays later, the Packers field goal team was on the field for a chance to jump out in front.  But Derek Hart’s snap was low, which led to Mason Crosby’s 38-yard field goal attempt being blocked.

Now the defense takes the field and they get three quick stops.  But after Matthew Stafford’s 3rd down pass fell incomplete, in came a penalty flag.  Mike Daniels is called for Unnecessary Roughness.  15-yards and a first down.  Six plays later, the Lions made the Packers pay with Stafford hitting Marvin Jones for a 25 yard touchdown pass. King is questionable for tonight’s game with Detroit

November 6, 2017 By Bill Scott

#20 Kevin King

Green Bay Packers rookie corner Kevin King was added to the teams injury report on Sunday with a back injury and is listed as questionable for tonight’s Monday Night contest at Lambeau Field.

King’s status for the game probably won’t be decided until about an hour before kickoff.

The Packers are expected to get safety Morgan Burnett back in their lineup.  He’s missed a couple of games with a hamstring injury.  That was expected to bring the Packers secondary back near full strength, but King’s latest injury could force the Packers coaching staff to do some more shuffling.

The Packers (4-3) will be trying to end a two-game losing streak.  They’re in a little better shape from that standpoint than the Lions are.  Detroit (3-4) is trying to put an end to a three-game slide.  Both teams are trying to keep pace with the first place Vikings (6-2), who are on bye this week.

The Packers are 25-1 over the last 26 games against the Lions in Wisconsin.  They’ll try to build on that tonight. [Read more…]

Rodgers undergoes surgery on broken collarbone

October 19, 2017 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers underwent surgery Thursday on the broken right collarbone he suffered in last Sunday’s loss to the Minnesota Vikings at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The rehabilitation process now begins for the six-time Pro Bowler.  The Packers said there’s a chance Rodgers will miss the rest of the season as he recovers from the injury.  It remains to be seen if Rodgers can return before the end of the Packers season.

Brett Hundley takes over at quarterback for the Packers until Rodgers can return.  Hundley will make his first regular season start against the New Orleans Saints at Lambeau Field on Sunday.

Rodgers headed for surgery, McCarthy not happy with the hit that put him there

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have surgery on his broken right collarbone “in the near future”.  That was the message from coach Mike McCarthy on Monday.

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said Monday that Anthony Barr’s hit on the Packers quarterback was “above board,” and said the Vikings are not a dirty football team.  Mike McCarthy has different thoughts on Barr’s hit.

“He’s out of the pocket, he’s clearly expecting to get hit,” McCarthy said.  “To pin him to the ground like that, I felt it was an illegal act.  To sit here and lose any of your players on something like that, it doesn’t feel very good. Yeah, I didn’t like the hit.  It was unnecessary, totally unnecessary, in my opinion.”

Rodgers was rolling out late in the first quarter.  After he released the ball, he was hit by Barr and the Vikings linebacker continued to drive him into the turf.

As of Monday afternoon, surgery had not been scheduled according to McCarthy.  But no decision on Rodgers roster spot will likely be made until after the surgery. [Read more…]

Rodgers injured as Packers fall to the Vikings (AUDIO)

October 15, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley takes over as the Packers starting quarterback.

The Green Bay Packers held on to back up quarterback Brett Hundley instead of trying to deal him to another team for a high draft pick.  They’re going to quickly find out if they made the right move.

Aaron Rodgers broke his right collarbone after he was driven to the ground by Minnesota Vikings linebacker Anthony Barr.  The Packers confirmed the injury and said Rodgers could miss the remainder of the season.

The Packers went on to lose to the Vikings 23-10, falling into a first place tie with Minnesota at 4-2 atop the NFC North.

Rodgers missed seven games when he broke his collarbone in 2013, but that was his left collarbone.  This is on the right side which should mean more recovery time.  The fact that the Packers very rarely deal in time tables and almost never say an injury may be season ending while the game is still in progress could be looked at as a bad sign. Packers put the wraps on the preseason with 24-10 win over the Rams

September 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

Taysom Hill

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up exhibition play with a 24-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night at Lambeau Field.

Brett Hundley played the entire first half at quarterback, completing 11 of 21 passes for 99 yards and a touchdown.  He also added a 13-yard touchdown run in the second quarter and finished with a quarterback rating of 81.2.

In four preseason games, Hundley completed 48 of 76 for 482 yards, three touchdowns and one interception with two rushing touchdowns.

After a first half of mostly passing, the Packers emphasized the running game in the second half.  Aaron Jones led the way with 48 yards on eight carries.  Jamaal Williams had 31 yards on 11 carries ad Devante Mays had 18 yards on six carries.

The Packers didn’t dress 28 players for the game.  Some are recovering from injuries but the majority were starters that were being held out until the regular season opener against Seattle a week from Sunday. [Read more…]

Packers open preseason with win over the Eagles

August 11, 2017 By Bill Scott

After a sluggish start for the offense, Brett Hundley hit wide receiver Jeff Janis for a 20-yard touchdown and the Green Bay Packers went on to knock off the Philadelphia Eagles 24-9 at Lambeau Field on Thursday.

The score was part of 17 unanswered points in the second quarter.  Trevor Davis also took one of his two punt returns back 68 yards for a touchdown, which likely put him in the driver’s seat for the punt return job this season.

A sprained ankle wiped out Hundley’s preseason a year ago, so his start against the Eagles was his first significant playing time since his rookie season two years ago.

Hundley finished 8 of 15 for 90 yards with a touchdown and an interception.  Mason Crosby also booted a 39-yard field goal to send the Packers into the locker room at halftime with a 17-6 lead.

Third-string quarterback Joe Callahan entered in the third quarter and completed 10 of 16 passes for 103 yards.  Rookie Taysom Hill came on late and threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Michael Clark with nine seconds left to play. [Read more…]

Packers release six players

August 29, 2016 By Bill Scott

Jeff Janis

Jeff Janis

The Green Bay Packers have released a total of six players so far, as they continue to get down to the NFL mandated 75 player roster limit by 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Along with punter Peter Mortell, the Packers also released DT Demetris Anderson, CB Randall Jette, WR Jamel Johnson, WR Ed Williams and LB Derrick Mathews.

The Packers are back on the practice field this afternoon, the first of two final open to the public sessions before the official close of training camp.

Wide receiver Jeff Janis, who fractured a bone in his right hand back on August 10, is practicing for the first time.  He has a large club cast on that hand.

In other injury related news, Morgan Burnett has returned from a back injury.  He’s been sidelined since August 12.  But first round draft pick Kenny Clark, who missed last week’s game at San Francisco, remains out with back issues.

Backup quarterback Brett Hundley has also returned to practice today after re-aggravating an ankle injury a couple of weeks ago.  It’s unknown if he’ll try to play this week against Kansas City.

Hundley likely to miss preseason game at San Francisco (AUDIO)

Things certainly haven’t gone according to plan for Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Brett Hundley.

After missing two weeks of Training Camp with a bad ankle, Hundley returned last week, only to re-injure his ankle early in the second quarter of Thursday’s 20-12 exhibition win over the Oakland Raiders.

Hundley spoke with reports on Saturday and was moving around well.  But Hundley’s ankle is still sore enough that Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the second year quarterback would be hard-pressed to play at all in the third preseason game against San Francisco. [Read more…]

Packers getting ready for Colts and Hall of Fame game

August 5, 2016 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up their practice week on Thursday night as they draw closer to the preseason opener against the Indianapolis Colts in the Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio on Sunday night.

Quarterback Aaron Rodgers and running back Eddie lacy didn’t practice.  Backup quarterback Brett Hundley didn’t work either, for the second straight night.  He’s  nursing a sore ankle and may not play Sunday night.

Rodgers isn’t expected to play Sunday either, which means the practice reps and playing time on Sunday night could be shared by backups Joe Callahan and Marquise Williams.  Mike McCarthy will meet with his coaches today to make playing-time decisions for the game.

Rodgers was being given the night off, after participating in every camp practice prior to Thursday night.

Eddie Lacy was pulled out of team drills during Wednesday nights practice because of an ankle injury and didn’t work on Thursday.
