March 16, 2021 By Bill Scott

2021 Big Ten Coach of the Year Tony Granato

The Big Ten regular season champion Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team, set to play in Tuesday night’s Big Ten Tournament championship game, made a haul when the All-Big Ten honors were handed out today.

Eight different Badgers were named either All-Big Ten, All-Big Ten Freshman or a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

The league’s scoring champion, Cole Caufield, was awarded the Big Ten Player of the Year.  He becomes the eighth Badger to win a conference player of the year award and the first since defenseman Jamie McBain took the WCHA Player of the Year honors in 2009.  The sophomore is the first Badger to be named Big Ten Player of the Year, an award that follows his title of Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 2020.

Caufield tallied 24 goals and 43 points in 24 Big Ten games, outpacing the next closest skater by 10 goals and 10 points.  The 2019 Montreal Canadians first-round draft pick also set the Big Ten standard for goals in a conference season with the performance.

Other UW conference player of the year winners are: Mike Eaves (1978), Mark Johnson (1979), Curtis Joseph (1989), Gary [Read more…]

January 29, 2021 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team (10-7-0, 8-5-0-0-1-0 Big Ten) put together its best performance of the season, blanking the Michigan State Spartans (6-9-2, 5-9-1-2-1-0) 6-0 on Friday night at LaBahn Arena.

Wisconsin’s leading scorer Cole Caufield put the Badgers on the board with a power-play goal just 54 seconds into the game.  Brock Caufield put the Badgers up 2-0 with his seventh goal of the season while Dylan Holloway added a goal to close out the first period scoring, giving the Badgers a 3-0 lead.

The Badgers defense held the Spartans to just three shots on goal in the second period and scored twice on goals from Cole Caufield and a power play tally from Roam Ahcan.

Holloway added his second goal of the game at 8:45 of the third period to close out the scoring.

Cole Caufield and Holloway both tallied two goals.  Caufield added an assist, extending his point scoring streak to nine games.  Holloway also added a pair of assists and now has three goals and seven points in the last two games.

Senior goaltender Robbie Beydoun got the start in goal and stopped 19 shots for his second shutout of the season.

The Badgers outshot the Spartans 50-19 for the game.

The Badgers will shoot for the sweep on Saturday afternoon with a 3 p.m. faceoff at LaBahn Arena.

12th ranked Wisconsin sweeps Arizona State

January 18, 2021 By Bill Scott

Linus Weissbach

The 12th ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team completed a two-game sweep of Arizona State with a 5-2 victory on Sunday night at LaBahn Arena.

Linus Weissbach and Cole Caufield scored power play goals in the first period and Mike Vorlicky lit the lamp in the second for a 3-1 lead.

The Sun Devils scored during a delayed 5-minute major penalty against Roman Ahcan with just over seven minutes left to play, but the Badgers killed off the penalty thanks in large part to freshman goaltender Cameron Rowe, who made 11 of his 23 saves in the third period.

Jason Dhooge and Brock Caufield added empty net goals to finish off the win and sweep of the Sun Devils, who seven weeks ago, swept the Badgers.

Wisconsin went 2-for-3 on the power play, ending a three-game drought and an 0-for-7 stretch.

The Badgers (8-6-0, 6-4-0-0-1-0 Big Ten) resume Big Ten play this Thursday and Friday at Penn State.

Badgers fall to top-ranked Minnesota, split with the Gophers

January 10, 2021 By Bill Scott

The 12th-ranked Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team (6-6-0, 6-3-0-1 Big Ten) split its home series against No. 1 Minnesota (11-1-0, 9-1-0-0 Big Ten) after coming up short in Sunday’s matchup.  The Gophers claimed game two, 5-3, after the Badgers handed them their first loss of the season a day earlier.

After the Gophers scored the first goal of the game just 1:21 into the first period, the Badgers even the score when freshman Sam Stange scored on a deflection at the 13:41 mark.  It’s the fifth of the season for Stange, who leads all Badger freshmen in goals scored.

Brock Caufield gave the Badgers a 2-1 lead at 11:58 of the second period on assists to Roman Ahcan and Jesper Peltonen.  But the Gophers answered with a pair of goals to head into the locker room for the second intermission with a 3-2 lead.

The Gophers scored a power play goal early in the third to make it 4-2, but Wisconsin’s Cole Caufield made it 4-3 at 4:12 of the third on assists from Ty Pelton-Byce and Linus Weissbach.

The Gophers made it a two-goal lead at 17:43 of the third period and that’s the way the game would end.

Senior goaltender Robbie Beydoun finished with 19 saves in goal in taking the loss.

The Badgers remain home for a two-game series against Arizona State on Jan. 15-16 with both games facing off at 7 p.m. at LaBahn Arena.  It’ll be the second meeting between the two teams this season, with the Sun Devils sweeping the Badgers 8-5 and 3-1.

Penn State (0-3-0, 0-3-0-0-0-0 Big Ten) remains winless on the season.

Hockey Badgers drop series opener at Minnesota

January 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers trailed go a goal late in the third period, but the Minnesota Gophers scored four goals in four minutes to come away with a 9-4 victory at Mariucci Arena.

Freshman center Mick Messner scored in the second period and forward Brock Caufield, Jack Gorniak and Seamus Malone each lit the lamp in the third period to make it a 5-4 game in favor of Minnesota (10-10-4, 7-5-3-0 Big Ten).  But the Gophers then rattled off four unanswered goals with under five minutes to play, putting the game out of Wisconsin’s (8-11-4, 4-5-4-1 Big Ten) reach.

The Badgers outshot the Gophers 46-28, but Minnesota’s success on the power play and an early 3-0 lead in the first period were enough to doom the Badgers.

“For 55 minutes, we played good hockey, but you can’t play a 55-minute game”, said Badger coach Tony Granato.  “Minnesota is a team where if they see weakness or they see us on our heels, they take advantage of it and that’s what happened.  Every time we let off the gas, they made a play and were able to pull away from us.”

The two teams wrap up the 2-game series on Saturday night.

December 1, 2018 By Bill Scott

Freshman forward Brock Caufield had his first career multi-goal game and rookie goaltender Daniel Lebedeff made 37 saves as the Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team skated to a 3-3 draw with 6th ranked Penn State on Friday night at the Kohl Center.
