Carthage captures D-3 Men’s Volleyball Title

The Carthage College (Kenosha) men’s volleyball team beat Benedictine in five sets on Saturday to win the NCAA Division III championship in Salem, Virginia.  The win marks the first title since Carthage started competing in athletics back in 1895.

Senior Matt Slivinski had 22 kills and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Carthage capped off the season with a perfect 23-0 record and had victories in 69 of the 72 sets they played.

UW-La Crosse reaches first ever NCAA D3 World Series

It took a pair of wins Sunday in La Crosse, but the UW-La Crosse Eagles earned their first ever trip to the NCAA Division 3 College Baseball World Series.

The Eagles won Game 1, 5-4, on Ben Morgan’s RBI single in the top of the ninth against Coe College (Iowa).

Needing yet another victory against the Kohawks, UW-L found themselves down 4-2 early after surrendering a couple of home runs. Then the Eagles (33-13) got hot, scoring seven runs in the sixth inning en route to a 15-4 Midwest Region-clinching victory.

The No. 20 Eagles will open the D3 World Series Friday against No. 5 Salisbury (Md.) at 6:45pm at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.

NCAA Division 3 baseball regional update

NCAA Baseball Championship logoIn the NCAA D-3 Central Regional in Waverly, Iowa, top-seeded UW-Stevens Point fell to Wartburg 4-2 on Friday and will face fourth-seeded Anderson in an elimination game at noon Saturday.

Fifth-seeded Carthage bounced back from a first-round loss to eliminate Greenville 10-2.  Carthage (29-14) will face Wartburg in an elimination game at 3:30 Saturday.

In the Midwest Regional in La Crosse, UW-Whitewater earned a 3-0 win over Washington University in an elimination game.  The Warhawks (35-10) play at noon Saturday against sixth-seeded Concordia-Chicago (32-14).  Concordia-Chicago knocked off Ripon College 6-5 to eliminate Ripon.

Second-seeded UW-La Crosse rallied on Friday for an 8-6 win over Washington University in 13 innings.  The Eagles (30-13) then fell to fifth-seeded Coe 11-5.  The Eagles play at 3:30 p.m. Saturday against the winner of the Whitewater and Concordia-Chicago game.

Ripon pulls off major upset in NCAA D-3 baseball regionals

NCAA Baseball Championship logoRipon College started the NCAA Division 3 baseball Midwest regional with a major upset, knocking off top-seed and defending NCAA Champion Whitewater 15-7 in La Crosse on Wednesday.

The 8th-seeded Red Hawks (24-14) pounded out 13 hits and moved into the winners bracket with a matchup against fifth seeded Coe (32-12) at 4:30 p.m. today.

The Warhawks (33-10) now face fourth-seeded St. John’s (26-15) at 10 a.m. today in an elimination game.

The host team, second-seeded UW-La Crosse (29-12), scored six runs in the eighth to pull out a 10-3 win over seventh-seeded St. Scholastica.  The Eagles will take on third-seeded Washington University (34-14) at 7:45 p.m. tonight.

Central Regional

In Waverly, Iowa, top seeded UW-Stevens Point beat sixth-seeded Greenville 7-4.  The Pointers (32-12) will face Wartburg (32-13) at 3:30 p.m. today.

Fifth-seeded Carthage College fell to second-seeded Webster 4-3.  Carthage (28-14) will play Greenville at noon today in an elimination game.

NCAA Div. 3 Baseball regional play opens today

NCAA Baseball Championship logoThe NCAA Division 3 baseball regionals open play today around the country.  Eight regional winners will be determined by the end of the weekend.  Those eight teams will head to the Fox Cities for the double-elimination NCAA D-3 College World Series at Fox Cities Stadium May 22-26.

Five Wisconsin teams begin play today.

Central Regional – Waterloo, Iowa

#1 seed UW-Stevens Point (31-12) vs. Greenville College (Ill.) (22-19)  noon
Carthage College (28-13) vs. Webster U. (30-13)  3:30 pm

Midwest Regional – La Crosse, Wisconsin

#1 seed UW-Whitewater (33-9) vs. Ripon College (23-14)  1:15 pm
#2 seed UW-La Crosse (28-12) vs. College of St. Scholastica (32-11)

A total of 56 teams earned bids to the 2015 NCAA Division III Championships.

56 team field is announced for the 2015 D-3 baseball championship

NCAA Baseball Championship logoThe NCAA Division-3 Baseball Committee has announced 56 teams that will compete in the 2015 NCAA Division-3 Baseball Championship.

The teams have been placed in eight regional sites.  All regionals will use a double-elimination format.  Forty conference champions qualified automatically.

The winners of the eight regional tournaments will qualify for the double-elimination championship at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton, May 22-27.

In the 2014 championship game, UW-Whitewater defeated Emory 7-0.  The Warhawks became the first program to win a football, men’s basketball and baseball national championship all in the same year.

A total of five Wisconsin teams help make up the 56 team field.

In the Central Region, which is being hosted by Wartburg (Waverly, Iowa), both Carthage and UW-Stevens Point make up the 6-team field.

In the Midwest Region, La Crosse received one of the tournaments at-large bids and will host the 8-team field.  Defending NCAA D-3 champion Whitewater is also in the field.  Midwest Conference champion Ripon is also among the teams in the region.

Regional play begins on Wednesday.

Stevens Point and Carthage College earn NCAA D-3 berths

Fox Cities Stadium will host the upcoming NCAA Division 3 baseball championships.

Fox Cities Stadium will host the upcoming NCAA Division 3 baseball championships.

Stevens Point and Carthage College both secured automatic berths in to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.

The 13th ranked Pointers knocked off host UW-Whitewater 15-7 to win the WIAC Tournament Championship.

Stevens Point (31-12) pounded out 14-hits against seven pitchers to come from behind to beat the Warhawks.  Whitewater pitchers 11.

Stevens Point heads into the NCAA tournament having won 12 of their last 13 games.

Carthage College entered the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament as the fourth-seed, but pounded out 18 hits in a 12-2 win over Illinois Wesleyan in the championship game.

Carthage (28-13) pitchers allowed just 11 runs in four games.

Accident claims life of former Carthage College football coach

Carthage College in Kenosha is mourning the unexpected passing of former head Football Coach Tim Rucks in a medical emergency-related 1-vehicle accident, north of campus.

Kenosha County Sheriff’s Deputies & Somers Fire-Rescue responded Tuesday morning for a jeep that veered off into a ditch, with the driver not moving.  Lifesaving efforts at the scene and into the hospital proved futile.

Top ranked Stevens Point falls in NCAA Regionals (College roundup)

In Stevens Point, the top ranked and host Pointers fell to Emory (GA) 76-73 in overtime, ending the Pointers season with just their second defeat.

In the first game of the night, UW-Whitewater knocked off the University of Texas at Dallas 81-63.

Whitewater faces Emory in the Regional Championship game at the Quandt Field House in Stevens Point tonight.  The winner advances to the NCAA Div. 3 final four in Virginia.

DePauw 73, Carthage 54

NAIA Men’s D-2

Southeastern (FL) 71, Cardinal Stritch 70  –  Cardinal Stritch is eliminated

Whitewater hosts NCAA Division III softball regional

The UW-Whitewater Warhawks host the 2013 NCAA Division III softball regional, which starts today.

The Warhawks are the t0p seed in the 8-team, double-elimination field.  They’ll open play at 10am this morning against Finlandia.  The Warhawks are making their 16th post season appearance and fourth in the last six years.

The tournament could last until Monday.  Following is the opening round schedule.

10am  #1  UW-Whitewater vs. #8 Finlandia
noon   #4  Carthage vs #5 Luther
2pm    #3  Eau Claire vs. #6 North Central
4pm    #2  Illinois Wesleyan vs. #7  Benedictine (IL)
