Badger women fall in Big Ten Tournament

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team gave sixth-seeded Michigan State a run for their money but in the end, it was the Spartans prevailing 70-63 in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament.

Wisconsin (9-22) led 37-30 at halftime, led by 10 points each from Cayla McMorris and Avyanna Young.

The Spartans (20-10) got 22 points from Tori Jankoska and 12 points and 12 rebounds from Taya Reimer.  They outscored the Badgers by nine points in the  third quarter, then held on for the win.

McMorris finished with 18 points and Young 17 points for the Badgers.

Badger women grab second straight Big Ten win

The Wisconsin Badger women’s basketball team has back-to-back wins in the Big Ten for the first time this season.

The Badgers didn’t allow a field goal over the final two minutes and held off Illinois 59-55 on Senior Night at the Kohl Center on Wednesday night.

The Badgers (8-20, 3-12 Big Ten) shot just 33% from the field but surpassed last season’s win total (7) with the win.

Cayla McMorris led the Badgers with 14 points.  Courtney Fredrickson added 12 points, giving head coach Jonathan Tsipis his 100th career win.

Redshirt senior Avyanna Young scored her 1000th career point in the first quarter.

The Badgers will wrap up the Big Ten regular season at Iowa on Sunday.

Badger women fall by 30 at Penn State

Wisconsin shot just 31% from the field and committed 23 turnovers on the way to a 76-46 loss to Penn State at University Park, Pennsylvania on Monday night.

Junior Cayla McMorris scored nine points in the first half and finished with 13 for the game.

Wisconsin’s 23 turnovers turned into 25 points for the Nittany Lions, who had just six turnovers themselves.

The Badgers also made just 3 of 19 three-point attempts.  They’ll return to action at Ohio State on Thursday night.

Badger women upset Green Bay

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team earned their biggest win of the season, upsetting in-state rival Green Bay 54-53 at the Kress Center on Thursday night.

It was just the second loss of the season with the first coming against then number-1 ranked Notre Dame by four points.

The Badgers (5-8) trailed by four points with 1:09 left to play.  Suzanne Gilreath drained a three-pointer and the Badgers trailed 53-52 with 45 second to play.

Following a Green Bay miss, the Badgers had the ball back with 28 seconds left.  The Badgers called timeout and found Malayna Johnson inside.  Her left handed shot at the basket gave the Badgers a one-point lead with 17-seconds left to play.

Another miss by the Phoenix at the end gave the victory to Wisconsin.

Gilreath had 17 points and Cayla McMorris 15 for the Badgers.  Mehryn Kraker had 18 points to lead Green Bay.

The Phoenix shot just 31% from the field and fell to 8-2 on the season.

Slow start costs Badger women

bucky-badger-logoThe Wisconsin women’s basketball team got off to a slow start and fell to North Carolina 72-59 at the Kohl Center on Thursday night.

The Tarheels jumped out to a 23-11 lead in the first 10 minutes, then cruised to victory.

The Badgers (2-6) outscored North Carolina (6-1) 34-25 in the second half but couldn’t overcome their slow start.

Avyanna Young led the Badgers with 12 points and 13 rebounds.  Suzanne Gilreath and Cayla McMorris both added 11 points in the loss.

Tsipis earns first win as Badger women’s coach

First year Wisconsin women’s basketball coach Jonathan Tsipis picked up his first victory as the Badgers head coach on Sunday.  The Badgers held on to beat Butler 60-55 at the Kohl Center.

Cayla McMorris helped the Badgers (1-3) seal it at the free throw line, hitting seven free throws in the last three minutes to preserve the victory.

Avyanna Young led the Badgers with 14 points and McMorris added 10.

The Badgers play at UW-Milwaukee on Tuesday night.

Badger women drop home opener

The Wisconsin women’s basketball team stumbled in its home opener, falling to Saint Francis of Pennsylvania, 103-100 at the Kohl Center.

Junior guard Cayla McMorris poured in a career-high 31 points, hitting a career-best 12-of-22 from the field, leading the Badgers (0-2) for the second straight game.

The Badgers shot 43% (37-for-86) from the field and out-rebounded Saint Francis 61-41.  The Red Flash also shot 43% from the field, but hit 15 shots from beyond the arc.

Three Badgers joined McMorris in double-figure scoring.  Courtney Frederickson had 18 points, Avyanna Young added 17 and freshman Gabby Gregory scored 12 points.  Young also grabbed 15 rebounds for her 17th career double-double.

The Badgers turned the ball over 25 times in the loss.  The Badgers return to action Wednesday night at home against Dayton.
