Josh Sitton looks to create opportunities on the ground for Cedric Benson this Thursday

Thursday presents an opportunity for the Green Bay Packers to avenge last week’s loss by taking on a fierce rival in the Chicago Bears.  With such a short week to prepare, major fixes will not be a concern for the team according to center Jeff Saturday.  He says the Packers need to execute better in order to get a win tonight.

One major execution the Packers must improve on is their running game.  Anyone who saw week one’s game can agree that the Packers need to do a better job running the ball. [Read more…]

Cedric Benson gets ready for the Packer’s season opener

With over 1,500 carries and almost 5,800 rushing yards, Green Bay Packers running back Cedric Benson certainly has been around the gridiron a few times.  After spending the past four seasons playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, this preseason may have been one of the harder ones for the veteran running back.  He began practicing with the team midway through August and started learning a new offense.

After playing in the last two preseason games and going through number of practices, he says he is ready to go for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. [Read more…]

Benson could be looking at opening day start

August 20, 2012 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy said running back James Starks

Cedric Benson

could still miss at least a couple more weeks, which could give the starting tailback job to start the season to veteran Cedric Benson.

Benson worked in full pads for the first time on Sunday and McCarthy was happy with what he saw.

Second year back Alex Green is still in the mix, but Benson should have the edge given his experience and Green’s lack of it, not to mention the fact that he’s still recovering from a knee injury.

If all goes well in practice this week, Benson will not only get some extended opportunities to run the ball, but he’ll have a chance to do it against his old team, the Cincinnati Bengals.

Benson unlikely to play Thursday night

August 13, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers were negotiating with the agent for running back Cedric Benson throughout the weekend, but didn’t reach a deal until Sunday afternoon.

That means Benson won’t hit the practice field until today.  Based on the CBA, he’ll have to practice today and tomorrow in shells, which means he likely won’t be ready to play Thursday night against the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field.

The deal is reportedly for 1-year and pays the veterans minimum $850,000 with no bonus.

The Packers made the move because of a number of injured running backs.

Benson rushed for 1,000 yards three straight times.  He hasn’t missed a game because of injury since 2009.

Packers sign RB Benson

August 12, 2012 By Bill Scott

It’s been discussed for some time and the discussion heated up over the last two days regarding veteran running back Cedric Benson signing with the Green Bay Packers.  The Packers finally made it happen, announcing the signing of Benson to a contract late this afternoon.

The 5’11, 227-pound Benson is in his 8th year out of Texas.  He spent the past four seasons (2008-11) with Cincinnati, where he led the Bengals in rushing each season.  He eclipsed the 1,000-yard rushing mark each of the last three seasons and ranks No. 5 in Bengals history with 4,176 career rushing yards.  Benson has played in 91 games (66 starts) during his NFL career and has rushed for 5,769 yards and 31 TD’s on 1,529 carries  (3.8 avg.).

Benson was selected in the first round (No. 4 overall) by Chicago in 2005 and rushed for 1,593 yards and 10 TD’s on 420 carries (3.8 avg.) in three seasons with the Bears.

Benson was a four-year starter at Texas (2001-04) and capped his career by winning the Doak Walker Award (nation’s top running back) as a senior when he posted 1,834 rushing yards and 19 TD’s.  Benson will wear No. 32 with the Packers.

The Packers placed TE Eric Lair on injured reserve.  The rookie from the University of Minnesota, signed with Green Bay as a non-drafted free agent on May 7.  He sustained a knee injury during training camp.
