Brewers sweep lowly Astros

August 2, 2012 By Bill Scott

If only the Brewers could play the Houston Astros all the time.  Milwaukee capped off a three-game sweep by beating the Astros 13-4 on Wednesday at Miller Park.

Ryan Braun clubbed his National League leading 29th home run, one of four Brewer home runs on the day.  Rickie Weeks, Cesar Izturis and Jonathan Lucroy also went deep for the Brewers.

The Brewers scored 31 runs and banged out 37 hits in the series, sweeping an opponent for the first time since they took 4-straight from the Los Angeles Dodgers in late May.

Mike Fiers worked six innings for the win (5-4), scattering eight hits and two runs while striking out six and walking nobody.

There are some signs that the Brewers are coming around offensively.  They’ve clubbed 22 home runs in their last 10 games.

The Brewers are off today.  They’ll open a 3-game weekend series in St. Louis against the Cardinals on Friday night.

Brewers survive, hold off Astros 8-7 (AUDIO)

July 31, 2012 By Bill Scott

Cody Ransom’s homer capped a four-run 8th inning and the Milwaukee Brewers held off the Houston Astros 8-7.

The Brewers took a 8-4 lead to the 9th, only to see Houston score 3-times to make it 8-7.  With John Axford on the mound, Cesar Izturis saved the day when he dived to glove J.D. Martinez’s sharp grounder, then threw a one-hopper to Corey Hart at 1st, which Hart held on to, preserving the 1-run victory.

The Brewers bullpen couldn’t protect a 4-3 lead in the 7th and almost blew the 4-run lead in the 9th. [Read more…]

Wolf gets first win since April, Axford loses closer job

July 18, 2012 By Bill Scott

Randy Wolf’s streak of 13-starts without a victory came to an end Tuesday night as the Brewers knocked off the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 at Miller Park.  The last time Wolf earned a win was April 30th.

Wolf lasted 6 2/3 innings allowing 2-runs on 8-hits with 6 strike-outs.  He left the game in the hands of Jose Veras with 2-outs in the 7th and runners on 2nd and 3rd.  Veras got Cardinals SS Rafael Furcal to pop ending the threat.  Manny Parra struck-out a pair and gave up nothing in a scoreless 8th frame.  Francisco Rodriguez had a shaky 9th allowing a couple of hits but got out of the jam and notched his 2nd save of the year.  Rodriguez wanted to make sure Wolf got the win…

Brewers win with clutch hitting

May 9, 2012 By Bill Scott

The lack of clutch hitting has been a big part of the Milwaukee Brewers slow start this season.  Last night, the Brewers turned the table and Manager Ron Roenicke is hoping they’ve turned the corner.

Aramis Ramirez clubbed a 2-out, bases loaded triple to lead the Brewers to a 8-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds.  All 8 Brewer runs came on two out hits.

Yovani Gallardo (2-3) also turned in one of his best performances of the season.  Gallardo gave up two runs in six innings for his second win of the season.  Gallardo tied a season high with eight strikeouts.

Jonathan Lucroy gave the Brewers their first runs, driving a 2-out, 2-run single to right in the bottom of the first. [Read more…]
