Green Bay stays in hunt for HL Tournament’s 2-seed, Milwaukee falls

The Green Bay Phoenix scored 56 points in the second half on Tuesday night, knocking off UIC 87-79 to move into sole possession of  third place in the Horizon League.

The Phoenix (17-11, 11-5 HL) used a 15-0 run late in the second half to put the Flames (14-15, 7-9 HL) away.

The win sets up a key matchup on Friday night against Oakland as both teams battle for the two-seed in the upcoming Horizon League Tournament.

Green Bay is 11-5, while Oakland is 12-4 after their win over Youngstown State.  Valparaiso is in control of the No. 1 seed, which means the winner between Green Bay and Oakland will gain a strong hold for the number-two seed. [Read more…]

Green Bay, Milwaukee fall in Horizon League play

Despite leading for all but five minutes of the game and shooting a season-high 60% from the field, the Green Bay Phoenix fell to Detroit Mercy 93-92 in Horizon League action on Sunday.

The Phoenix also committed a season-high 21 turnovers, 13 of them in the second half, in the loss.

Detroit (5-17, 3-7 HL) trailed 92-87 with 1:46 left, but they scored the final six points of the game, keeping the Phoenix scoreless the rest of the way.

Four players finished in double-figures for Green Bay (13-9, 7-3 HL), led by Khalil Small’s season-high 21.  Warren Jones and Charles Cooper each scored 15 points and Turner Botz added 12. [Read more…]

Phoenix hold off Cleveland State in Horizon League play

The Green Bay Phoenix ended a two-game losing streak, knocking off Cleveland State 83-73 at the Resch Center.  The Phoenix (12-8, 6-2 HL) shot 50 percent from the field and 59.3 percent alone in the second half, earning the season sweep over the Vikings (6-15, 2-7 HL).

Green Bay started slow out of the gates, missing 11 of their first 14 shots.  But the Phoenix converted on eight of  their next nine shots and took a two-point lead into the half at 36-34.

Charles Cooper came up big in the second half, scoring 14 of his 16 points in the final 20 minutes.  Warren Jones and Kerem Kanter added 15-points each. [Read more…]

Green Bay picked third in men’s Horizon League preseason poll

The Horizon League released its preseason poll and honors on Thursday morning.

The Green Bay Phoenix landed senior Charles Cooper on the All-League First Team and were picked to finish third in the Horizon League preseason poll.

2015-16 regular season champion Valparaiso was selected to repeat as champions, followed by Oakland and Green Bay.  UIC was picked fourth and Wright State fifth.  The second five consist of Detroit Mercy, Northern Kentucky, Cleveland State, Youngstown State and Milwaukee.

Valparaiso’s Alec Peters is the Preseason Player of the Year.

Cooper started all 36 games for the Phoenix last season, finishing second on the  team in scoring and rebounding at 13.6 ppg and 5.5 rebounds per game.

Green Bay Upsets Valpo in Horizon League semifinals

Jordan Fouse had 25 points and 10 rebounds to help fourth-seeded Green Bay pull out a 99-92 upset victory over top-seeded Valparaiso at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Alec Peters had 32 for the Crusaders, including a layup at the buzzer that forced overtime.  Valparaiso had trailed by six points with less than two minutes remaining.

It was all Green Bay in overtime as they jumped out to a 7-2 run and then the Phoenix (22-12) held on for their 22nd win of the season.

Charles Cooper finished with 24 points and Carrington Love 23 for the Phoenix.  They’ll face Wright State in tonight’s 6 p.m. Championship game.

Wright State advances

Wright State advanced to the Horizon League Championship game against Green Bay tonight.  The Raiders got 18 points off the bench from Mark Alstork in a 59-55 win over second-seeded Oakland.  The third-seeded Raiders improved to 22-12 on the year.

The winner of tonight’s Green Bay/Wright State game secures the Horizon League’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Green Bay holds off rival Milwaukee

The Green Bay Phoenix had just played five-straight road games and ten of their last 12 away from the Resch Center, and the Milwaukee Panthers were wrapping up a five-game road trip, facing their rivals on Monday night.

The two teams were clearly road weary and their offense came in spurts.  In the end, the Phoenix played the cleaner game and held off the Panthers 70-68 to move into 4th place in the Horizon League, in front of the Panthers.  The Phoenix evened the season series with the two games being decided by a total of three points.

The Panthers had a couple of chances at the end of the game, with the Phoenix leading by two.  Brock Stull and Austin Arians missed three-pointers in the final eight seconds. [Read more…]

Green Bay Phoenix earn road victory

Green Bay Phoenix logo 2The Green Bay Phoenix earned their seventh win in the last nine games, knocking off Morehead State 78-72 in Morehead, Kentucky on Monday night.

The Phoenix improved to 3-0 on the road against teams from the Ohio Valley Conference this season.

Former Milwaukee high school standout Jamar Hurdle enjoyed his best game in a Phoenix uniform, finishing with a team-high 19 points (8 of 9 fg) and seven rebounds.

Carrington Love tallied 18 points and teammate Charles Cooper added 14 points and seven rebounds in the win.

It’s the first loss for the Eagles (6-5) at home this season and the third road victory for the Phoenix.  Green Bay recorded 46 points in the paint and made only two three-pointers, tying its lowest mark of the season.

The Phoenix opens Horizon League play on Saturday afternoon against Northern Kentucky at the Resch Center (1pm).

Green Bay grinds out its second straight victory

After starting the season 0-3,  the Green Bay Phoenix won their second straight on Tuesday night, 66-63 over the Akron Zips at the Resch Center.

Senior Jordan Fouse grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, helping the Phoenix (2-3) pull out their second straight win.  Green Bay shot just 32-percent (22-of-68) from the field, two of 13 from beyond the arc (15.4-percent) and 20-of-37 (54.1-percent) from the free throw line.

Green Bay junior Charles Cooper (team high 14 points) hit one of two free throws in the closing seconds to put the Phoenix up three.  Akron (3-2) had one chance to tie but Antino Jackson’s three-point shot fell short at the buzzer.

Green Bay returns to action at Eastern Illinois (0-3) on Saturday night.
