Woodson lowering his standards

May 10, 2013 By Bill Scott

Former Green Bay Packers safety Charles Woodson hasn’t had any free agent interest

Charles Woodson

from contending teams, so he told the NFL Network that he’ll now consider playing for a rebuilding team if that’s what it takes.

The 37-year old Woodson was released by the Packers after last season but said he has no plans to retire.  Woodson has played 15-seasons in the NFL, nearly half of that with the Packers.

Woodson is tied for No. 2 in NFL history (with Darren Sharper) with 11 INT returns for TDs, trailing only Rod Woodson (12).  He ranks No. 3 in the NFL with 26 interceptions since 2008, despite missing 9 games due to injury this season. [Read more…]

Woodson’s release is no surprise

February 15, 2013 By Bill Scott

Charles Woodson missed 9-games this past season with his second broken collarbone in the last three years and today, the Green Bay Packers released the

Charles Woodson

veteran safety, saving more than $9.4-million on the teams salary cap.

This day was coming and today’s move shouldn’t be a surprise to anybody.  But it’s never fun to see a player that has accomplished as much as Woodson has, have to be told he doesn’t fit in the teams plans any longer.

In his prime, Woodson was one of the top players in the game and he’s a certainty for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Woodson came to Green Bay with a reputation, considered a player that marched to his own beat.  In fact, when Woodson left Oakland, nobody wanted him.  Nobody but the Packers that is. [Read more…]

January 2, 2013 By Bill Scott

Veteran Green Bay Packers defensive back Charles Woodson has been cleared to play this Saturday night against the Minnesota Vikings.  It

would be his first return to the field since breaking his collarbone on Oct. 21 against the St. Louis Rams.

Woodson lined up at safety with the number 1 defense in practice on Tuesday.

The Packers are hoping Woodson will help the Packers defense against Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson.  Peterson has tallied 409 yards rushing in two games against the Packers this season.

What remains to be seen is what Woodson’s return to action will mean for some of the other young defensive players, starting with rookie corner Casey Hayward.

Woodson will also be looking to force Minnesota quarterback Christian Ponder into a turnover or two.  Ponder didn’t turn the ball over at all in the Vikings 37-34 win over the Packers last week.

Packers return to work today (AUDIO)

January 1, 2013 By Bill Scott

During the regular season, Tuesday is usually an off day for the Green Bay Packers.  However, with the Packers hosting the Minnesota Vikings Saturday night in Wild Card weekend of the NFL Playoffs, Green Bay is back on the practice field today instead of the customary Wednesday start to the work week.

It will be the third meeting between the teams in the last six weeks.  Green Bay knocked off the Vikings 23-14 back on December the 2nd while the Vikings earned a 37-34 win this past Sunday at the Metro Dome.  The third meeting of the season will come just six days after the last time the teams laced it up.

to knock the rust off prior to the start of the playoffs.

Head coach Mike McCarthy declared him out of Sunday’s game at Minnesota because team doctors still aren’t satisfied with the condition of his collarbone.

Woodson has been running pass routes on the scout team in practice but hasn’t worked in the team portion of practice.

Linebacker Clay Matthews has been selected to his fourth Pro Bowl.  He’s in as a reserve.  And the surprise selection comes with the naming of veteran center Jeff Saturday to the squad.  It’s Saturday’s 6th Pro Bowl selection and it comes one week after he was benched in favor of Evan Dietrich-Smith at Center.

Kick returner Randall Cobb and guard Josh Sitton were named first alternates.

Additional alternates include fullback John Kuhn, cornerback Tramon Williams, defensive tackle B.J. Raji and safety Charles Woodson.

Lang could return to guard / Packers injury update

December 13, 2012 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers Offensive lineman T.J. Lang returned to the practice field on Wednesday and

TJ Lang

could return to action this Sunday against the Bears.

Lang took reps at left guard during practice, which could mean a return to his old position on Sunday.  It also likely means a second straight start for Don Barclay at right tackle.

Clay Matthews also returned to practice on Wednesday and appears to be on target to return to the lineup after missing the last four games.  The news isn’t as good for Charles Woodson.  The Packers medical staff doesn’t feel Woodson is ready to return and will sit another week.

Defensive end Mike Neal made a surprise return to practice on Wednesday, despite bruising and swelling to his shoulder.  If he can play, alongside the recently signed Jordan Miller, the Packers would have 6 healthy defensive lineman that would give Dom Capers the ability to play more base defense as opposed to staying in nickel or dime packages.

Wide receiver Jordy Nelson did not practice on Wednesday and Mike McCarthy said he would be a long shot for Sunday’s game.

Woodson ruled out of Sunday’s game at Chicago

December 13, 2012 By Bill Scott

Charles Woodson

The news was rather surprising at Green Bay Packers headquarters on Wednesday.  Veteran safety Charles Woodson has been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears after the team’s medical personnel didn’t feel he was quite ready to return from his broken collarbone.

AUDIO: Mike McCarthy says Charles Woodson won’t play on Sunday :20

Coach Mike McCarthy called it a frustrating day for Woodson, who was prepared to join his teammates on the practice field on Wednesday.  Instead, he was told last-minute that he’ll have to wait another week.

Woodson practiced last week and even put pads on in the padded workout last Thursday.  But that was only to get used to wearing them again.  Woodson had not been cleared for contact.
