Badger seniors with a happy farewell

March 8, 2019 By Bill Scott

After playing close game after close game, the Wisconsin Badgers cruised to a convincing 65-45 senior night victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Thursday night at the Kohl Center.  The win moved the Badgers to within one victory of securing fourth place in the Big Ten and a double-bye heading into the Big Ten Tournament.

Senior Ethan Happ had 21 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals to help the Badgers sweep the Hawkeyes in the season series.  It marked the 9th time that Happ has scored at least 20 points and collected at least 10 rebounds in a game, the most by a Big Ten player and the second most of any player in the country.

The Badgers (21-9, 13-6 Big Ten) moved one full game in front of fifth-place Maryland (21-9, 12-7).  The Terrapins host Minnesota in their final Big Ten contest on Friday night, while the Badgers close out at Ohio State on Sunday. [Read more…]

Badgers dialing long distance in New Zealand

Andy Van Vliet

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team hit 15 of 27 three-pointers (55.6%) and rolled to a 87-53 win over the New Zealand Breakers on Thursday morning in Tauranga, New Zealand.

Junior Andy Van Vliet made his first start as a Badger and led the way with 14 points.  Sophomore point guard D’Mitrik Trice added 12 points, while freshmen Kobe King and Nathan Reuvers each scored 9 points for Wisconsin (2-0).

The Badgers changed their starting lineup.  Besides sophomore Brevin Pritzl, coach Greg Gard went with freshman Brad Davison, redshirt freshman Aleem Ford, Van Vliet and junior Charlie Thomas.  That group helped the Badgers jump out to a 11-0 lead.

Defensively, the Badgers held the Breakers to 29.7% shooting from the field and 3-for-21 (14.3%) from three-point range.

The Badgers now head to Melbourne, Australia for the third game of their five game trip.  They’ll face the Hawthorn Magic on Friday.

The unranked Wisconsin Badgers won for the ninth time in their last ten games, knocking off 8th-ranked Iowa 67-59 at Carver Hawkeye Arena on Wednesday night.

Wisconsin became the first team to knock off the Hawkeyes in Iowa City this season and at ten-and-five in the Big Ten, clinched a winning conference record for the 16th straight season, equaling the longest streak in Big Ten history (Purdue also had a run of 16 straight seasons from 1972-88).

The Badgers (18-10, 10-5 Big Ten) outscored Iowa, eight-to-one, over the final one minute 40 seconds to notch their second road win against a top-10 team this season.  It’s the first time Wisconsin has accomplished that since 1955.

The Badgers bench outscored the Hawkeyes bench 23-4.  Khalil Iverson and Jordan Hill scored nine points each while Charlie Thomas added five points. [Read more…]

Badgers receive 3rd commitment for 2015 class

October 15, 2014 By Bill Scott

The University of Wisconsin has added a third piece to its 2015 freshman recruiting class on Tuesday, receiving an oral commitment from 6’7 power forward Charlie Thomas from Clarksville, Maryland.

Thomas joins Brevin Pritzl (De Pere) and Alex Illikainen (Grand Rapids, Minn.) in Bo Ryan’s 2015 class.

Thomas passed on offers from Rutgers, DePaul, Vanderbilt and George Mason.  He’s considered a power forward but his skill set allows him to play multiple positions.

Wisconsin still remains in the hunt for two other big men for the 2015 class:  Diamond Stone (Whitefish Bay Dominican) and Josh Sharma (Northfield, Mass.).
