Kumerow could see more opportunities with Packers

December 17, 2019 By Bill Scott

Jake Kumerow

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jake Kumerow has caught just 11 passes on 18 targets this season.  But those 11 receptions have added up to 212 yards.  That’s a 19.3 yard per catch average which ranks number one on the team.

Kumerow makes big plays.  His latest came Sunday on a 49-yard catch and run.  It eventually led to a Aaron Jones touchdown run.

With other receivers (Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Geronimo Allison) struggling at times, coach Matt LaFleur was asked Monday what is it going to take to get Kumerow involved more.

“We have to make sure we get him on the field,” LaFleur said.  “So I think you’ll see more of him as we move forward.” [Read more…]

Packers winning ugly over the Redskins

December 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Aaron Jones

The Green Bay Packers jumped out to a 14-0 first quarter lead and held on for a 20-15 win over the Washington Redskins on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Aaron Jones rushed for a season-high 134 yards and a touchdown on just 16 carries.  Jones also led the Packers in receiving with six receptions for 58 yards and totaled 192 all-purpose yards on the day.  Jones touchdown is his 15th of the season, his 12th rushing touchdown.  His 100-yard rushing day is his third of the season.

Aaron Rodgers finished 18-of-28 for 195 yards and a touchdown to tight end Robert Tonyan.

The Packers (10-3) remain atop the NFC North, a game better than the Minnesota Vikings, who scored a 20-7 win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. [Read more…]

Sitton retires as a Packer

December 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Sitton (WRN File Photo)

Former guard Josh Sitton, who played eight seasons (2008-15) in Green Bay, has informed the club of his decision to retire with the Packers.

Sitton, who was originally selected by the Packers in the fourth round (135th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft out of Central Florida, started 112 of 121 regular-season games and all 13 postseason games he appeared in for the Packers.  From 2009-15, he started 110 games, which is the most by a Packer offensive lineman.

Sitton was named to the Pro Bowl three times with the Packers (2012, ’14-15) and was also selected second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press three times (2013-15).  He was the first Green Bay guard to be named to the Pro Bowl in back-to-back seasons since Marco Rivera went to three straight from 2002-04.  He was also selected as a Pro Bowl alternate in 2010, 2011 and 2013. Defense dominates in Packers 10-3 season opening win

September 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

Mike Pettine and his defense was the star of the night

Players and coaches weren’t willing to concede that no playing time in the preseason is the reason why offenses struggled on opening night, but the defenses dominated and the Green Bay Packers did just enough to pull out a 10-3 win on Thursday night at Soldiers Field.

The hope was that Mike Pettine’s second year defense, along with a number of key free agent acquisitions, would be much improved.  Last night, the Packers defense was bordering greatness in the season opener.

It might take the Packers offense a while to figure things out in Matt LaFleur’s new system, but based on Thursday night’s defensive effort, there’ll be a little margin for error.

But one has to wonder how much of last night’s defensive display had to do with the defense itself, as compared to a terrible night for Bears quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who went 26-45 for 228 yards, an [Read more…]

Sitton announces his retirement

April 5, 2019 By Bill Scott

Josh Sitton

Former Green Bay Packers right guard Josh Sitton announced that he is retiring from the NFL.

Sitton played on the Packers 2010 Super Bowl team and joins former teammates T.J. Lang and Jordy Nelson in retiring this offseason.

The 32-year-old spent eight seasons with the Packers, starting in 2008 and started every game in six of his last seven years with the team.

The Packers let Sitton go prior to the 2016 season.  He spent two years in Chicago with the Bears and his last season with Miami, although he played in just one game after suffering a torn rotator cuff.

Sitton was originally a fourth round draft pick of the Packers in 2008 out of Central Florida.  He was named to four Pro Bowls, three with the Packers and one with the Bears.  He was also named to the Associated Press All-Pro second team three times.

Packers miss playoffs for second straight year

December 17, 2018 By Bill Scott

The chances of making the playoffs for the Green Bay Packers were not very good going into Sunday’s game, the likely reality became official when they lost to the Chicago Bears 24-17 and then saw it become official when the Vikings knocked off the Miami Dolphins in Minnesota.

The Bears captured the NFC North title for the first time since 2010 while the Packers missed out on the playoffs for the second straight season.  It’s the first time the Packers have gone back-to-back seasons without a spot in the playoffs in 18 years.

Aaron Rodgers NFL-record streak of 402 straight pass attempts without an interception came to an end in the fourth quarter when Bears safety Eddie Jackson picked off a deflected pass in the end zone.

Last year, the Packers season went south when Brett Hundley started nine games for an injured Rodgers.  But this year, Rodgers has started all fourteen games so far. [Read more…]

Packers steal a win with another impressive performance by Rodgers

September 10, 2018 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers File Photo – UPI/Bill Greenblatt

The Green Bay Packers did little right in the first half and went into the locker room at halftime trailing the Chicago Bears 17-0.  Chicago would increase that lead to 20-0 early in the third quarter, but it’s what happened just before the start of the second half that is key.

Aaron Rodgers went down with a knee injury in the first half and was carted off to the locker room.   There it was determined that Rodgers injury, which caused him considerable pain, couldn’t get any worse.  So Rodgers walked and then jogged back onto the field for the second half, declaring himself fit to play in the second half.

“This is what we’re paid to do,” Rodgers said.  “We’re paid to deal with injuries and play through them.  That’s what everybody’s doing and will be doing throughout the season.  That’s the measure of a teammate, is what are you willing to put on the line? [Read more…]

Packers secure much needed victory

November 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

Brett Hundley

Brett Hundley threw for 212 yards and a touchdown to collect his first NFL win and secure a much needed victory for Green Bay.  The Packers snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Bears 23-16 at Soldier Field on Sunday.

Hundley threw a 17-yard touchdown to Davante Adams to give the Packers a 23-13 lead with 5:29 left to play and the Packers (5-4) held on for the win, beating the Bears (3-6) for the eighth time in the last nine games.

The win was the first for the Packers since they last beat Dallas back on October 8.  Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone against the Vikings one week later and the Packers have been winless until Sunday.

Hundley completed 18 of 25 passes and Ty Montgomery ran for a 37-yard touchdown in the second quarter.  But the Packers ended up losing both Montgomery (ribs) and starting tailback Aaron Jones (knee) to injury.  Jamaal Williams came in to rush for 67 yards on 20 carries and the Packers totaled 160 yards on 37 carries. Bears’ Trevathan suspended for two games

October 1, 2017 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

The NFL has suspended Chicago Bears linebacker Danny Trevathan for two games over the weekend, stemming from his illegal hit on Green Bay Packers wide receiver Davante Adams last Thursday night.

Adams had to be taken from the field on a stretcher during the third quarter of the Packers’ 35-14 win.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said Adams is home but everything looks good.  Adams is now in the teams concussion protocol.

Trevathan will be eligible to return to the Bears’ roster on Oct. 16, although he can appeal the ruling.
