The Wisconsin football teams of the last decade won a total of 102 games, second only to Ohio State’s 117 victories.  The Badgers had three players named to the Big Ten All-Decade Team.

The Detroit Free Press surveyed six conference writers from the USA Today Sports Network to select the Big Ten’s All-Decade team.

There were a total of 10 teams represented on the all-decade squad.  Ohio State had the most with six.  Michigan had five, Michigan State had four, Penn State, Wisconsin and Iowa all had three.  Maryland had two and Minnesota, Indiana and Purdue each had one player make the squad.

Leading the way for the Badgers is running back Jonathan Taylor, who played from 2017-19.  Taylor won the Doak Walker Award twice, is a two time All-American, a three-time first-team All-Big Ten selection [Read more…]

Monday night, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland announced he was done after just one season in the NFL.  He’s walking away at the age of 24.

The former Wisconsin Badger told ESPN’s “Outside the Lines,” he wanted to avoid a potential string of concussions that can lead to chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).  Borland gave up millions of dollars and the fame that goes with playing in the NFL because he didn’t want to commit to something that could ruin his life.

This wasn’t a snap decision for Borland, it’s something that he has thought about since getting his bell rung in training camp last season. [Read more…]

ESPN’s “Outside the Lines” reported Borland’s decision on Monday evening, saying the 24-year-0ld told the San Francisco 49ers of his decision last Friday.

Former Wisconsin Badger linebacker Chris Borland’s rookie season at San Francisco is likely over.

Borland suffered an ankle injury recently and with the 49ers being out of playoff contention, it’s likely that they won’t push Borland to return.

Borland was the NFC’s rookie of the month in November.  He was injured on the final play of the first half against Seattle last Sunday and was scheduled to undergo an MRI.

Filling in for the injured Patrick Willis, Borland led the 49ers in tackles with 107.  That number ranked 12th in the NFL this season.

Badgers’ Biegel receives Big Ten honor

November 11, 2014 By Bill Scott

Vince Biegel

Vince Biegel

Wisconsin Badger sophomore linebacker Vince Biegel has been named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Week.

Biegel (Wisconsin Rapids) had a huge day in the Badgers 34-16 win at Purdue, registering seven tackles, four tackles for loss and three sacks.  His four tackles for loss were the most by a Big Ten player in a game this season and his three sacks matched the conference high.

Biegel and the Badgers defense held a third straight opponent under 100 yards rushing.

It’s the first career Defensive Player of the Week honor for Biegel.  The last Wisconsin Defensive Player of the Week winner was Chris Borland (Nov. 11, 2014).

May 10, 2014 By Bill Scott

Everyone predicted and expected inside linebacker Chris Borland to be the first Wisconsin Badger to be selected in the 2014 NFL

Draft and many thought it would come in the second round.

Not only did Borland last until the 3rd round, but he was the second player selected.  Dezmen Southward went first in the 3rd round, the 68th player taken overall, to the Atlanta Falcons.  Southward was the fifth safety taken in the draft.  The first four all went in the opening round on Thursday.

Southward couldn’t take part in the NFL Combine because of injuries.  But he did participate 10-days later at UW’s pro day and Southward didn’t disappoint.  He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds.

Linebacker Chris Borland didn’t go until 9-selections later, 77th overall to the San Francisco 49ers.  Borland was the 10th linebacker selected.

Borland to work out at NFL combine today

February 24, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers haven’t gone out of their way over the years,

Chris Borland

making room for University of Wisconsin Badger players on their roster.  But the Packers do need inside linebacker help.  Could the Big Ten’s defensive player of the year, Chris Borland change the pattern?

Despite being undersized, Borland was a four-year starter in Madison and some scouts are comparing him to former NFL inside linebackers Zach Thomas or Chris Speilman.

Borland stands less than six feet tall and he doesn’t have long arms, but he doesn’t feel those qualities would stop him from measuring up with the top linebackers coming out of the college ranks.

We’ll see what’s said and written about Borland once he’s done testing today, one thing we’ve learned from Borland during his stay at Wisconsin is that he’s a player that can’t just be measured by his height and weight.
