Brewers climbing towards .500

June 3, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoJonathan Villar stayed hot, clubbing a two-run home run in the ninth inning Thursday night, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Villar’s home run is his third this season and it gave the Brewers some breathing room after they entered the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead.  Chris Carter also went deep for the Brewers, helping Chase Anderson win for the 3rd time (3-6) this season.  Anderson pitched 5 2/3 solid innings.

Villar added a single and a walk, watching his on-base percentage improve to .409.  He’s hitting .305 and has stolen a major league leading 19 bases.

Carter’s solo home run in the fourth is his 14th of the season, but first since May 20.

The Phillies only run came on Maikel Franco’s solo home run, his fourth in the last four games against the Brewers this season.

Anderson allowed a run on three hits, striking out six with no walks.  Jeremy Jeffress notched his 14th save of the season.

The win is the second straight for the Brewers and seventh in the last ten games.  At  25-29, the Brewers also climbed to within 4-games of the .500 mark.

Game two of the series is tonight.  Jimmy Nelson gets the starting nod for the Brewers.

Zach Davies

Zach Davies tossed eight innings of 3-hit, shutout ball and struck out a career high nine hitters to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 win over the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park.

Davies started the year 0-3.  Yesterday’s impressive performance evened his record at 3-3.  His ERA dropped from 8.78 after three starts to 4.53 after Wednesday’s wins.

Davies was so good that the Phillies didn’t move a runner past first base against him.  Along with his nine strikeouts, Davies didn’t walk a single batter.  He retired the last 14 batters he faced, striking out six of the last eight and three in a row in the eighth. [Read more…]

Brewers fall to Mets, put Santana on DL

May 21, 2016 By Bill Scott

Brewers logoThe Milwaukee Brewers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on the strength of Chris Carters 2-run homer, but they would put just one runner on base the rest of the way in falling to the New York Mets 3-2 in their series opener at Citi Field.

Mets lefty Steven Matz shut the Brewers down from there, retiring 15-straight after Carters home run.  The only other Brewer to reach base was Hernan Perez, who singled with two outs in the sixth inning.  But Perez was thrown out trying to steal, which means the Brewers didn’t leave a single runner on base the entire game.  They managed just three hits.

Wily Peralta was holding the Mets in check as well.  The Brewers were up 2-1 until the sixth when Peralta surrendered Michael Conforto’s two-run, opposite field home run to left, giving the Mets the 3-2 lead and eventually the game. [Read more…]

Jose Fernandez allowed just four hits in seven solid innings, leading the Miami Marlins to a 4-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in their series opener.  Fernandez struck out 11, ending the Brewers two-game win streak.

The Brewers looked like they had something going early.  Jonathan Villar led off the first with a double and Alex Presley followed with a walk.  Ryan Braun then sent a long drive into the gap in right-center, but Giancarlo Stanton hauled it in just short of the fence.  Chris Carter then grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the threat.

The Marlins struck first when J.T. Realmuto clubbed a two-run home run, but Marcell Ozuna, who singled [Read more…]
