Luis Castillo allowed one hit over 7.2 innings and Raisel Iglesias worked around a leadoff double in the ninth inning to notch the save as the Cincinnati Reds beat the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 Thursday afternoon.
Brewers blanked 3-0; Yelich top seed in Derby
Cincinnati – Sonny Gray allowed only four hits in eight innings and struck out 12 Brewers hitters to help the Reds beat the Brewers 3-0 Wednesday night in Cincinnati.
Yasiel Puig stayed hot, hitting his 19th home run of the season in the second inning. Brewers starter Jhoulys Chacin turned in one of his better outings of the season, allowing just two runs over six innings with eight strikeouts.
Milwaukee managed just four singles off Gray, and didn’t have major league home run leader Christian Yelich in the lineup. He was given the day off.
Cincinnati has won two of the first three games in the series. They sent Luis Castillo to the mound on Thursday afternoon against Brandon Woodruff. The Brewers are still a game up on the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division.
It’s also been announced that Yelich will be the top seed in baseball’s Home Run Derby, and compete against rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in round one next week in Cleveland.
Woodruff leads Brewers to split with Cincinnati
Brandon Woodruff struck out a career high 12 batters to help lead the Milwaukee Brewers to their second straight win, 7-5 over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park on Sunday.
Woodruff improved to 9-2. The nine wins ties him with Jyun-Jin Ryu of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the most wins in the National League.
Woodruff allowed three runs in seven innings to pick up the win. Jeremy Jeffress allowed two runs in the ninth before closing out the Brewers victory.
Reds starter Anthony DeSclafani struck out all six Brewer batters he faced in the first two innings. But Travis Shaw clubbed a long home run in the third, setting off a five run outburst by the Brewers. [Read more…]
Reds blank Brewers in series opener
Milwaukee Brewers starter Gio Gonzalez surrendered three runs in the first inning and the Cincinnati Reds made that hold up. The Reds pulled out a 3-0 victory in the series opener on Tuesday night at Miller Park. It’s the first time the Brewers have been blanked on the scoreboard this season.
Sonny Gray blanked the Brewers for six innings, striking out nine and securing his first win of the season. Three Reds relievers finished the victory for Gray as the Brewers went down via the strikeout 14 times on the night. They were 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position.
Right-fielder Christian Yelich was scratched from the lineup before the game with back spasms. He’s not in the lineup for Wednesday’s series finale either.

Peralta leads Brewers to sweep of Cincinnati
Freddy Peralta bounced back from a shaky first outing and tossed a gem in Cincinnati, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 1-0 win over the Reds on Wednesday at Great American Ballpark.
Peralta allowed just two hits over eight innings, striking out 11 and walking nobody as the Brewers swept the three-game series. It’s their fifth straight win, improving to 6-1.
Alex Wilson worked the 9th inning and earned the save. he allowed a lead off walk to Tucker Barnhart, then retired the next two hitters. With two outs, Matt Kemp singled to put runners on 1st and 3rd before Wilson got Eugenio Suarez to ground into a force at second to end the game.
Peralta dominated with his fastball. Of the 100 pitches he threw, 84 were fastballs and 72 of the 100 pitchers were strikes. None of the 24 outs were recorded by a ground ball. He threw his fastball high in the zone all day and dominated with it. [Read more…]
Arcia halts skid, helps Brewers beat Reds
Orlando Arcia snapped out of an 0-for-16 skid to start the season by clubbing a three-run home run in the sixth inning, sending the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark.
Arcia’s home run snapped a 1-1 tie as the Brewers improved to 5-1 on the season.
The Brewers first run game on a third inning run scoring single off the bat of Jesus Aguilar.

Brewers overcome slow start to finish off Reds (AUDIO)
The Milwaukee Brewers started slow, falling behind Cincinnati 2-0 but they eventually rallied to beat the Reds 5-2 in their series opener at Miller Park on Monday night.
Chase Anderson coughed up a pair of solo home runs but settled down to pitch six-innings and earn his 8th win (8-7) of the season.
Christian Yelich and Travis Shaw homered in the fifth and sixth innings, while Josh Hader and Jeremy Jeffress tossed three innings of scoreless relief. Brewers pitchers allowed the Reds just three hits.
Eugenio Suarez and Phillip Ervin clubbed solo homers for the Reds.
The Brewers handed Homer Bailey (1-11) his 11th loss of the season.
Milwaukee added insurance in the 8th off of former Brewer Jared Hughes, who opened the inning by walking Ryan Braun. Keon Broxton came on to drive home Braun with a run scoring triple. Manny Pina’s sacrifice fly to center field ended the scoring for the Brewers.
Junior Guerra pitches game two of the series for the Brewers tonight. Cincinnati will counter with Sal Romano.

Brewers drop second straight to Reds
After winning the first two games of the series in Cincinnati, the Milwaukee Brewers dropped the last two, including Sunday’s 8-2 decision to the Reds.
Rookie right-hander Freddy Peralta got off to a sluggish start, allowing three runs in the first inning before settling in. But as it turned out, the Brewers offense went missing again and it didn’t really matter.
Ryan Braun’s 9th-inning two-run homer was too little, too late.
The first six batters all reached base against Peralta (3-1) in the first inning, a 43-pitch frame. But he eventually retired nine straight batters before leaving for a pinch hitter in the sixth. Peralta ended up allowing three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.
The Brewers didn’t have a base runner off of Reds starter Matt Harvey until the 5th when Travis Shaw singled.
Rain came in the sixth and delayed the game for 54 minutes. When play resumed, Aaron Wilkerson took over on the mound and the Reds exploded for five runs, including a grand slam off the bat of Jose Peraza.
Braun’s home run in the ninth prevented the Brewers from being shut out for the 11th time this season.
The Brewers are back home on Monday night to open a three-game interleague series against the Minnesota Twins. Brent Suter will get the start for the Brewers.
Thames to the rescue in Brewers victory
For the second straight day, Eric Thames clubbed a two-run homer to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 2-0 victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park.
It was the team leading seventh of the season for Thames. He has now homered in 12 of 19 games against Cincinnati since the start of last season. Thames has also increased his April home run total to 18 over the past two seasons, most in the majors.
Zach Davies, Dan Jennings and Jacob Barnes combined to blank the Reds on three hits for the second straight day.
Davies (1-2) went 6 1/3 innings to win for the first time this season.
The Brewers pitching helped them overcome a defense that committed three errors, which ties a season high.
Christian Yelich returned to the lineup for the Brewers. He went 1 for 2 with a pair of walks.
Jacob Barnes pitched the final two innings for the save, his second of the season.
The Brewers open a four-game series against the Miami Marlins tonight. Chase Anderson (1-1, 2.82) gets the start for the Brewers. Miami goes with Dillon Peters (2-1, 6.75).
Brewers pitching takes over in win
Still struggling to hit and score runs at home this season, the pitchers took over on Tuesday night as the Milwaukee Brewers blanked the Cincinnati Reds 2-0 at Miller Park.
Junior Guerra pitched 5 2/3 innings of scoreless, one-hit ball. Dan Jennings earned the win in relief and Josh Hader earned the six-out save for the Brewers, who improved to 9-9.
The Reds, after a 10-run, 14-hit effort on Monday, managed just three hits off of Brewers pitching on Tuesday night.
Eric Thames provided the Brewers with all the offense they would need, clubbing a two-run homer in the sixth off of Reds starter Sal Romano. It’s the team leading sixth home run this season for Thames, who now has clubbed 17 April home runs in his two seasons with the Brewers.
Hader struck out three of the seven batters he faced, which now means he has struck out 25 of the 41 batters he’s faced. [Read more…]
