Packers open preseason with win over the Eagles

August 11, 2017 By Bill Scott

After a sluggish start for the offense, Brett Hundley hit wide receiver Jeff Janis for a 20-yard touchdown and the Green Bay Packers went on to knock off the Philadelphia Eagles 24-9 at Lambeau Field on Thursday.

The score was part of 17 unanswered points in the second quarter.  Trevor Davis also took one of his two punt returns back 68 yards for a touchdown, which likely put him in the driver’s seat for the punt return job this season.

A sprained ankle wiped out Hundley’s preseason a year ago, so his start against the Eagles was his first significant playing time since his rookie season two years ago.

Hundley finished 8 of 15 for 90 yards with a touchdown and an interception.  Mason Crosby also booted a 39-yard field goal to send the Packers into the locker room at halftime with a 17-6 lead.

Third-string quarterback Joe Callahan entered in the third quarter and completed 10 of 16 passes for 103 yards.  Rookie Taysom Hill came on late and threw a seven-yard touchdown pass to Michael Clark with nine seconds left to play. [Read more…]

Badgers collapse in second half, fall in Big Ten title game

December 4, 2016 By Bill Scott

motion-wWisconsin used a powerful running game and their usual stellar defense to jump out to a 28-7 lead.  Penn State scored a touchdown just before halftime and added 24 additional points in the second half to pull out a come-from-behind 38-31 win over the Badgers in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday night.

Penn State quarterback Trace McSorley completed 22 of 31 passes for 384 yards and four touchdowns, taking advantage of a Badger secondary that played not only their worst game of the season, but possibly of their career.

The big play Nittany Lions got to the Badgers with six big plays totaling 228 yards, five through the air and one on the ground.  It was characteristic of Penn State, but uncharacteristic of the Badgers, who were one of the better big play defenses in college football.

But even with a 14-point halftime lead, Badger fans went into halftime wondering what would come in the second half.  Penn State, which outscored the Badgers 24-3 in the second half, outscored their opponents in the second half on the season 280-105. [Read more…]

The Wisconsin Badgers knew they would be playing for the Big Ten Championship before they took the field against the Minnesota Gophers on Saturday.  The first half may have looked like that as the Badgers trailed 17-7 at halftime.

But the Wisconsin defense, which has engulfed opponents all season long, did it again in the second half against the Gophers.  The Badgers rallied for a 31-17 win over the Gophers.

The Badgers (10-2, 7-2 Big Ten) knocked off Minnesota (8-5, 5-4) for the 13th straight season, will now face Penn State in the Big Ten Championship game on Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Penn State (10-2, 8-1) beat Michigan State, 45-12, on Saturday.

Minnesota quarterback Mitch Leidner passed for 111 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 60 yards as the Gophers were jumping all over the Badgers in the first half. [Read more…]

Badgers have Gophers in the way of Big Ten West Division title

November 20, 2016 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin has taken their opponents one at a time, finishing off Purdue on Saturday in West Lafayette, Indiana 49-20.

The only thing that stands in their way of winning the Big Ten’s West Division title is the rival Minnesota Vikings.

The Badgers have beaten the Gophers 12 straight times in the series and the last time Minnesota knocked off Wisconsin in Madison is 1994.

Not only will the Badgers be playing for the West Division title and Paul Bunyan’s Axe, but they’ll be trying to send the seniors out with a win in their final home game.

The Badgers (8-2, 6-2 Big Ten) started slow against the Boilermakers (3-8, 1-7).  But they rebounded to put up 35-points in the second quarter to take control. [Read more…]

Badgers fall short at home against Buckeyes

The 8th ranked Wisconsin Badgers jumped out to a 16-6 halftime lead against number-two Ohio State on Saturday night but settled for a 30-23 overtime loss against the Buckeyes.

After Ohio State scored in overtime, the Badgers had first and goal at the four and came up empty.  Too many times, the Badgers settled for field goals instead of touchdowns.  UW reached the Ohio State 4 and 9 yard lines in the second quarter but had to settle for field goals.

The Badgers suffered back-to-back losses now for the first time since the 2012 season.  Wisconsin fell to 2-2 against top 10 teams this season.

The Badgers got their ground game going early and finished the first half with 170 rushing yards and 313 total yards.

Corey Clement finished regulation with 164 yards on 22 carries.  Jazz Peavy had four catches for 76 yards and six carries for 70 yards.

J.T. Barrett was the key player for the Buckeyes, passing for 226 yards and rushing for 92 more.

The Buckeyes improved to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Ten.

The Badgers dropped to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten.  The Badgers face the Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City this coming Saturday.  Iowa is 5-2 overran and 3-1 in the Big Ten.

Badgers without their kicker for Big Ten opener

September 23, 2016 By Bill Scott

Rafael Gaglianone

Rafael Gaglianone

The Wisconsin Badgers will be without kicker Rafael Gaglianone in their Big Ten opener at Michigan State on Saturday.  Gaglianone is battling back problems, but has hit seven of his first eight field goal attempts.

Gaglianone was held out of spring practice because of back issues.

UW’s Andrew Endicott, UW’s kickoff specialist for the last three seasons, will handle the kicking chores in Gaglianone’s place on Saturday.  He hasn’t attempted a field goal or extra-point since his high school days.

Elsewhere, tailbacks Corey Clement (ankle) and Taiwan Deal (leg), as well as left guard Micah Kapoi (foot) are all listed as questionable.  Tailback Bradrick Shaw will miss the game on Saturday with injury.

If Kapoi can’t go, redshirt sophomore Brett Connor would get the start.

Badgers survive upset bid by Georgia State

September 18, 2016 By Bill Scott

alex-hornibrookThe Wisconsin Badgers went into Saturday’s game against Georgia State as 34 1/2 point favorites.  The outcome was much different from what was anticipated.

Wisconsin’s defense was stellar as usual in the first half, but the Badgers managed a 6-0 lead at the break.

The Badgers came out of the locker room and increased that lead to 13-0, after Paul Chryst pulled quarterback Bart Houston for redshirt freshman Alex Hornibrook.

It was at that point that the Panthers scored a pair of touchdowns and jumped out in front 17-13 early in the fourth quarter.

Georgia State used a quick passing game and didn’t allow the Badger pass rushers to make an impact.

The Badgers were able to regain the lead when Hornibrook tossed a short touchdown pass.  They would add a Rafael Gaglianone field goal and then get a big defensive stop to hang on for the win. [Read more…]

Clement is questionable for Georgia State game

September 16, 2016 By Bill Scott

Corey Clement

Corey Clement

Wisconsin running back Corey Clement is listed as questionable for Saturday’s final non-conference matchup against Georgia State.

Clement missed eight games last season after sports hernia surgery.  He suffered an ankle injury late in the first half of the Akron game last week and was limited in practice this week.

Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said Clement was able to do some stuff on Monday and hasn’t done a whole lot since.  Certainly the Badgers want Clement healthy for their Big Ten opener next week at Michigan State.

Clement has 42 carries for 197 yards and three touchdowns in the first two games.

If Clement can’t play Saturday, the Badgers will have plenty of options, starting with Dare Ogunbowale (13 carries – 62 yards), Taiwan Deal (13 carries – 60 yards) and redshirt freshman Bradrick Shaw (9 carries – 74 yards and 1 TD).

The Badgers are 34 1/2 point favorites for Saturday’s game.  Kick time at Camp Randall Stadium is set for 11 a.m.

The Wisconsin Badgers improved to 2-0 on the young season, rolling to a 54-10 win over the Akron Zips in the home opener at Camp Randall Stadium.

Corey Clement left the game late in the first half with a minor injury and didn’t return.  Clement rushed 21 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns in the win.  A week earlier, Clement rushed 21 times for 87 yards against LSU with a touchdown.

The Badgers made a big improvement on third downs.  After converting 3 of 15 third-down opportunities against LSU, Wisconsin rebounded to convert 10 of 14 third-down opportunities against Akron.

Quarterback Bart Houston also improved from his week one performance against LSU.  He started a bit slow against Akron, but in the end, Houston completed 15 of 22 for 231 yards and two touchdowns. [Read more…]

Badgers shock LSU at Lambeau Field (AUDIO)

Vince Biegel led the Badgers defense to upset win over LSU

Vince Biegel led the Badgers defense to upset win over LSU

When the new top 25 polls come out this week, don’t be surprised if the Wisconsin Badgers climb into the top ten.

The Badgers have been told all summer that the schedule they face is too difficult.  The first chance to show people that they can play with the best teams in college football came on Saturday at Lambeau Field and it was Wisconsin that prevailed, 16-14 over 5th ranked LSU.

The Badgers jumped out to a 13-0 lead, despite squandering several scoring opportunities as they dominated the Tigers on both sides of the ball.

But the Tigers came charging back, taking a 14-13 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Badgers had what appeared to be one final chance, although they would have plenty of time on the clock.  They drove beyond mid-field but seemed to be playing for a go-ahead field goal try, instead of pushing the envelope and trying to score a touchdown. [Read more…]
