Marquette edges DePaul in Big East action

Sophomore guard D.J. Carton scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half and added seven rebounds to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles (12-13, 7-11 Big East) to a 77-71 win over the DePaul Blue Demons (4-13, 2-13 Big East) on Tuesday night at Wintrust Arena.

Dawson Garcia added 12 points and senior forward Jamal Cain had nine points and nine rebounds, while the Golden Eagles held DePaul to 41% shooting from the field.

The Golden Eagles wrapped up a month-long, six-game road swing and will now return to Milwaukee to host Xavier in the Big East finale on Saturday (8 p.m. CT – Senior Night).

Cold Shooting Dooms Marquette

The Marquette Golden Eagles shot just 30% from the field and 12% from 3-point range and fell to the Seton Hall Pirates 57-51 in Big East road action on Sunday.

D.J. Carton had 16 points and Theo John added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles (9-12, 5-10 Big East), who have dropped six of their last seven games.

Marquette trailed 26-20 at halftime, hitting just 8 of their 30 field goal attempts (26.7%) in the opening 20 minutes.  The team’s point total was their lowest since an overtime loss to Providence on Jan. 27th.

The Golden Eagles return to action Wednesday with a 5:30 p.m. CT tip at Butler.

Marquette starts road trip with loss at Villanova

The Marquette Golden Eagles fell further behind in the Big East Conference, dropping a 96-64 decision at 4th ranked Villanova on Wednesday night.

Freshman forward Dawson Garcia scored 14 of his career-high 28 points in the first half and guard D.J. Carton added 13 points for the Golden Eagles (9-11, 5-9 Big East).

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl poured in 27 points, going 10 of 11 from the field and hitting all 5 of his three-pointers to lead Villanova.

Marquette shot 40% from the field as a team, but the Wildcats knocked down 63% of their shots, including 59% from three-point range.  The Golden Eagles also committed 16 turnovers and Villanova turned those miscues into 30 points.

Marquette continues their five-game road swing at Seton Hall at 2 p.m. CT on Sunday.

Marquette falls short at home against Creighton

The Marquette Golden Eagles late rally fell short on Saturday, falling to the Creighton Blue Jays 71-68 at Fiserv Forum.

The 12th ranked Blue Jays (14-5, 10-4 Big East) had 19 second-chance points on 11 offensive rebounds in the win

The Golden Eagles (9-10, 5-8 Big East) kept the game close in the first half, but the Blue Jays, with their offensive rebounding and second chance points started to pull away.

After Creighton jumped out in front 51-39, the Golden Eagles started to chip away again.  D.J. Carton hit a three-pointer with 45.1 seconds left to cut the Blue Jays lead to 68-65.

Coby McEwen missed a three-pointer in the final seconds that would have forced overtime.
Christian Bishop had 14 points to lead Creighton to their 14th win of the season.  They avenged a 89-84 home loss to the Golden Eagles at Creighton on Dec. 14.

Justin Lewis returned to the Marquette lineup after missing two games with a leg injury, but went scoreless in eight minutes.  Carton had 16 points to lead the Golden Eagles.  Jamal Cain added 14 and Theo John had 10.

The Golden Eagles return to action on Wednesday, visiting No. 3 Villanova in the first of five straight road games.

Marquette ends three game slide (AUDIO)

The Marquette Golden Eagles led by as many as 18 points but had to hang on for a 70-67 win over the Butler Bulldogs 70-67 on Tuesday afternoon at Fiserv Forum.

The Golden Eagles (9-9, 5-7 Big East) shot 61.5% from the field (24-39) and were led in scoring by D.J. Carton and Koby McEwen with 18 points each.  Freshman forward Dawson Garcia added 14 points before fouling out late.

The Bulldogs (5-10, 4-8 Big East) gut the Marquette lead to two points at 69-67 on a Jair Bolden 3-pointer with 18 seconds remaining.  After a McEwen free throw, Bolden’s tying triple from the wing came up empty and the Golden Eagles escaped with the win.

Marquette resumes Big East Conference action on Saturday at 4 p.m. against No. 15 Creighton at Fiserv Forum.

Marquette drops Big East road game at Providence

This was supposed to be a stretch of games on Marquette’s games where they had a chance to pad their record, but the Golden Eagles have dropped a pair of winnable games to drop back to .500.

After a home loss to DePaul (68-61) on Saturday, the Golden Eagles started slow Wednesday night and fell to Providence 72-63 in overtime in Providence, Rhode Island.

The Friars (9-7, 5-5 Big East) avenged a 79-69 loss to the Golden Eagles on Jan. 12 at Fiserv Forum.

Marquette (8-8, 4-6 Big East) struggled out of the gates and scored just 18 points in the first half, trailing 25-18 at the break.  Marquette had more turnovers (nine) in the first half than they did field goals (eight).  The Golden Eagles shot just 34.8% (8 of 23) from the field in the first half.

The second half was better for the Golden Eagles, who hit their first four shots from the field and took a 36-35 lead with just over 12-minutes left in regulation.

Koby McEwen had 13 points to lead Marquette, but he spent most of the second half in foul trouble.  D.J. Carton and Justin Lewis added 12 points each.

Marquette returns home to host St. John’s in Big East action on Sunday afternoon.

Marquette’s Big East Losing Streak Reaches Three

Collin Gillespie scored 22 points and sank six 3-pointers to lead No. 5 Villanova (8-1, 3-0 Big East) to a 85-68 win over the Marquette Golden Eagles on Wednesday night at Fiserv Forum.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Justin Moore added 13 points each and Caleb Daniels added 10 to help the Wildcats win their sixth straight and send the Golden Eagles to their third straight loss.

Villanova led 36-30 at halftime, but Marquette’s (5-5, 1-3 Big East) Jamal Cain opened the second half with a 3-pointer that cut the Wildcats lead to 36-33.  But Villanova went on a 10-1 run and was never threatened from there.  The Wildcats led by as much as 23 points.

Cain scored 15 points and D.J. Carton and Theo John added 10 points each in the loss.

Marquette hit 26-51 (51%) from the field and 9-18 (50%) from three point range, but they made just 7 of 16 (43.8%) from the free throw line and committed 17 turnovers for the game.

The Golden Eagles get a week off and return to action January 2 at Georgetown.

Marquette Drops Big East Home Opener

A late-game rally from Marquette fell short on Thursday night as the Golden Eagles dropped their Big East Conference home opener 70-63 at Fiserv Forum.

Seton Hall’s Sandro Mamukelashvili led all scorers with 17 points and Jared Rhoden added 16 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Pirates.

D.J. Carton led Marquette (5-3, 1-1) with 16 points.  Theo John added 13 points and four blocked shots, while Jamal Cain had 12 points and eight rebounds.  Freshman Dawson Garcia pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds in the loss.

Marquette got just seven points from their bench, all coming from freshman Justin Lewis.  The Pirates held Marquette’s leading scorer, Koby McEwen, to seven points.

The Golden Eagles have lost the last five games in the series with Seton Hall.

The Golden Eagles return to action Sunday at Xavier.

Marquette Opens Big East With Win At Creighton

D.J. Carton scored a career-high 20 points, and Greg Elliott and Dawson Garcia combined for 23 of their 28 in the second half to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles to a 89-84 road upset over No. 9 Creighton to open Big East Conference play on Monday night.

The Golden Eagles (5-2, 1-0 Big East) came from 12-points down to beat the Blue Jays (4-2, 0-1).

Mitch Ballock hit 8 of his 13 three-pointers and scored a season-high 26 points to lead Creighton.  Denzel Mahoney added 21 points.

The Golden Eagles beat the 2019-20 Big East regular-season co-champions for the first time in four meetings.

The Blue Jays ran off nine straight points to get to 76-75 but Carton hit a three and Dawson Garcia added a jumper and a put back basket to make it 83-75.

Creighton would again cut the Marquette lead to three and Carton missed a free throw but the Golden Eagles kept possession on a tie-up under the basket.  Koby McEwen then made a pair of free throws for an 85-80 lead with 30 seconds left.

Creighton didn’t do themselves any favors at the free throw line, hitting just 11 of 22 in the second half and finished 14 of 25 (56%) for the game.  Marquette held Creighton to 44% shooting from the field in the second half and outscored the Blue Jays 54-40 in the second half.

The Golden Eagles return home to host Seton Hall in their Big East home opener on Thursday night at Fiserv Forum.

Marquette’s Garcia tabbed as BIG EAST preseason Freshman of the Year

Marquette’s 6’11 forward Dawson Garcia has been tabbed as the BIG EAST Preseason Freshman of the Year in a vote by the league’s head coaches.

Garcia, considered one of the elite prep recruits in the country, is expected to make immediate contributions for Marquette.

The Prior Lake, Minnesota native averaged 31.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and finished his prep career with 2,092 points scored.  He shot 56.3 percent from the floor and 41.2 percent from 3-point range.  Garcia was the USA Basketball MVP of the 2019 FIBA 3×3 in the U18 World Cup.

The only other Marquette player receiving BIG EAST preseason honors is sophomore guard D.J. Carton, who averaged 10.4 points in 20 games at Ohio State last season.

Creighton guard Marcus Zegarowski was tabbed the 2020-21 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year.  He averaged 16.1 points as a sophomore last season.

Zegarowski is joined on the first team by junior guard David Duke of Providence, Seton Hall senior forward Sandro Mamukelashvili, Villanova senior guard Collin Gillespie and Villanova sophomore forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl.
