Rettke earns record eighth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors

Wisconsin’s 6’8 middle blocker Dana Rettke has captured Big Ten Player of the Week honors for a record eighth time this year.

The 6’8 middle blocker recorded a match-high 14 hills at Indiana last Friday and a team-high 11 kills at Purdue on Saturday.  Rettke averaged 4.17 kills per set while hitting .465 (25 kills – 5 errors – 43) on the weekend.

On the season, Rettke leads the Badgers with a .437 hitting percentage, which ranks second in the Big Ten.  She has a team-best 1.39 blocks per set, which ranks fourth in the conference.  She also had a team-best 3.38 kills and 0.27 service aces per set.

Until this season, the most awards received in a season was six, set by Minnesota’s Samantha Seliger-Swenson in 2015.

No. 13 Wisconsin (17-8, 8-8 BIG) wraps up the road portion of the Big Ten season with two matches this weekend.  The Badgers travel to Illinois (18-9, 9-7) on Friday for a 7 p.m. match in Champaign, Illinois.  Wisconsin takes on Northwestern (14-14, 4-12) for the second time this season on Sunday.  The two teams will play in Evanston, Illinois at 1 p.m.

Volleyball Badgers fall at Penn State

The ninth-ranked Wisconsin volleyball team fell to No. 1 Penn State on Wednesday night, falling to the Nittany Lions, 25-19, 25-22, 23-25, 25-16, in Rec Hall.

Middle blocker Dana Rettke led all players with 17 kills while adding four blocks and a service ace.  Fellow middle blocker Tionna Williams notched 10 kills and five blocks.

Penn State (20-1 overall, 10-1 Big Ten) outhit Wisconsin (14-6, 5-6), hitting .241 (54 kills – 19 errors – 145 attempts) while holding UW to .207 (55-24-150).

Sophomore Tiffany Clark and senior Kelli Bates earned 20 and 15 digs, respectively, helping UW earn the backcourt advantage, 67-62.

The Nittany Lions put up 14 blocks to Wisconsin’s nine.  Setter Sydney Hilley and Williams lead the team with five stuffs each.

The Badgers return to the UW Field House on Saturday for a match with Northwestern at 7 p.m.

Rettke named Big Ten freshman of the week again!

The Big Ten Conference has named Wisconsin freshman middle blocker Dana Rettke the league’s Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season.

Rettke led the Badges with 12 kills at Iowa while hitting .600 (12 kills – 0 errors – 20 attempts).  She added 11 kills at Nebraska on Sunday to average 2.88 kills per set on the weekend.  The freshman had a team-high four blocks at Iowa and six blocks at Nebraska to average 1.25 blocks per set.  Rettke continues to improve her service, adding three aces on the weekend to average 0.38 aces per set.

For the season, the Riverside, Illinois, native has a team-best 68 blocks to average 1.55 blocks per set, ranking 11th in the nation.

The 7th ranked Badgers (11-2, 2-2 BIG) hosts No. 6 Minnesota (13-2, 2-2) on Wednesday night at the Field House, then travels to No. 14 Michigan State (11-2, 4-0) on Saturday.

UW’s Rettke garners another freshman honor

For the third time this season, Dana Rettke of the Wisconsin volleyball team was named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week.

The 6’8 middle blocker recorded six career highs on the weekend.  She had a team high 19 kills on 34 attack attempts against Michigan State on Friday  night.

On Sunday, Rettke recorded career bests of five service aces, including four in the third set, against Michigan.  She also recorded a career high nine blocks vs. the Wolverines.

The Badgers (10-1 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) takes to the road for the first time in Big Ten play this week, traveling to Iowa (12-3, 1-1) and eighth ranked Nebraska (9-3, 2-0) on Friday and Saturday.

Badgers drop in poll

After falling to Michigan State on Friday night in five sets, the Badgers dropped two places to seventh in this week’s AVCA Top-25 Coaches’ Poll.  Wisconsin has been ranked in the national poll for 49 straight weeks, including 26 consecutive weeks in the top 10.

Volleyball Badgers sweep Michigan

Seniors Kelli Bates and Lauryn Gillis teamed up to lead the 5th-ranked Wisconsin women’s volleyball team to its first Big Ten Conference win of the season.  The Badgers swept No. 20 Michigan, 25-11, 30-28, 25-13, at the UW Field House on Sunday afternoon.

Wisconsin (10-1 overall, 1-1 Big Ten) was unstoppable in the first set, hitting .500 (12 kills – 2 errors – 20 attempts).  UW hit .359 (44-11-92) for the match and held the Wolverines (10-4, 0-2) to .079 (32-24-101), their lowest percentage of the season.

Bates led all players with 12 kills while adding seven digs and three blocks.  Gillis also scored double-digit kills, earning 12 putaways.

Freshman Dana Rettke was a force behind the service line.  The middle blocker collected a career-high five aces.  The Badgers scored six aces and held Michigan to two.

Rettke also earned a match-high and career-high nine blocks as UW out-blocked the Wolverines 13-6.  Redshirt sophomore Madison Duello tied her career high with eight stuffs.

The Badgers travel to Iowa City, Iowa, on Friday for a 7 p.m. match with the Hawkeyes from Carver-Hawkeye Arena.  Wisconsin continues its road trip, taking on No. 14 Nebraska on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Devaney Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Badger volleyball ready for Big Ten play

For the first time since 2010, the 5th ranked Wisconsin women’s volleyball team wrapped up the non-conference season with an undefeated record.

The Badgers swept Southern Mississippi 25-8, 25-10, 25-11 to win their own Badger Classic at the UW Field House on Saturday night.  Wisconsin completes the non-conference season with a perfect 9-0 record and lost only one set along the way.

The Badgers hit a season-high .461 (40 kills – 5 errors – 76 total attempts), which ties for second on the three-set, single-match record list under 25-point rally scoring.  The Golden Eagles (9-6) hit an opponent season low negative .043 (22-26-93).

Senior Lauryn Gillis was the only player in double-figure kills, recording a match-high 11 putaways.

Wisconsin outblocked Southern Miss 10-0, behind a match-high five blocks from Dana Rettke.  UW also had five service aces and did not get aced by the Golden Eagles.

Wisconsin opens the Big Ten Conference season next weekend, hosting No. 23 Michigan State on Friday and No. 21 Michigan on Sept. 24.

Rettke, Hilley honored by the Big Ten

Wisconsin freshman Dana Rettke was named the Co-Big Ten Conference Player of the Week and Co-Big Ten Freshman of the Week while freshman Sydney Hilley was named the Big Ten Setter of the Week.

Rettke, a 6’8 middle blocker, averaged 5.0 kills, 1.83 blocks and 0.83 digs per set in leading the Badgers to two wins over the weekend.  Wisconsin swept Louisville and No. 11 North Carolina in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the UW Field House.

The 6th ranked Badgers (2-0) take to the road for the first time this season, traveling to Manhattan, Kansas, for the K-State Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  The Badgers will face Syracuse (2-2) and Arkansas (3-0) on Friday before taking on host Kansas State (2-1) on Saturday.

7th ranked Volleyball Badgers open season with a win

The freshman duo of Sydney Hilley and Dana Rettke led the 7th ranked Wisconsin volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-19, 26-24 sweep of Louisville in the first round of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge in the UW Field House on Friday night.  UW opened its season with a win for the second straight season and for the fourth time under fifth-year head coach Kelly Sheffield.

Hilley finished with 36 assists and added four kills, three digs and one block.  In Hilley’s first start running the Badger offense, Wisconsin hit .320 (42 kills – 11 errors – 97 attempts) while holding Louisville to .171 (39-21-105).

Rettke led all hitters with 15 kills while hitting .500 (15-3-24).  the 6’8 middle blocker also had a match-high six blocks.  Wisconsin outblocked the Cardinals 8-6.

Sophomore M.E. Dodge had a team-high 10 digs.

The Badgers wrap up the Challenge on Saturday night at 7:30 against 11th ranked North Carolina (0-1).  The Tarheels lost their opener last night at Minnesota.
