Brewers acquire first base help

July 7, 2021 By Bill Scott

With Daniel Vogelbach on the injured list and Keston Hiura continuing to struggle with the bat, the Milwaukee Brewers acquired first baseman Rowdy Tellez from the Toronto Blue Jays for pitchers Trevor Richards and Bowden Francis.

Richards was acquired by the Brewers earlier in the Willy Adames deal, while Francis was recently promoted from Class AA Biloxi to Class AAA Nashville in the Brewers farm system.

Just a day earlier, Hiura struck out four times in the Brewers 4-2, series opening loss to the New York Mets.  He had already been demoted twice to the minors.

The left-handed hitting Tellez is 26 years of age and has played his entire career with the Blue Jays (2018-21), batting .241 with 37 home runs and 99 RBI in 219 games.  He hit .209 with four homers and eight RBI in 50 games over two stints with the Blue Jays this season, and .298 with four homers and 11 RBI in 13 games with Class AAA Buffalo.

The Brewers game Tuesday against the Mets was postponed by weather.  It’ll be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday with 1:10 p.m. and 6:10 p.m. start times.

Brewers add second baseman Kolten Wong

The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a two-year deal with free-agent second baseman Kolten Wong.  The Athletic was first to report the deal, which is expected to pay Wong $18 million over two years with an option for a third year.  The deal is pending a physical.

Wong broke in the Major Leagues with St. Louis and played all eight years with the Cardinals.  He won the National League Gold Glove at second base each of the last two seasons.  The Cardinals declined a $12.5 million club option for 2021, instead paying him a $1 million buyout.

Adding Wong at second base will most likely move Keston Hiura to first base.  Hiura was the Brewers first-round draft pick in 2017 and has had throwing issues at second base.  He committed six errors in 49 games there last season and 22 total errors during his first two seasons in the majors. Brewers fall to Reds, drop series in Cincinnati

September 24, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Cincinnati Reds have scored 14 runs in their three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers.  All of those runs were the result of the home run.  The Reds went yard three times on Wednesday night to pull out a 6-1 win over the Brewers, taking the series three-games-to-two.

The Reds pulled a game in front of the Brewers as the loss dropped Milwaukee back a game under .500 at 27-28 with five games left to play.  The Brewers open a 5-game series against the Cardinals in St. Louis tonight.

Reds ace Trevor Bauer, pitching on short rest, tossed eight innings of 1-run, 4-hit ball.  He walked just one and struck out 12 Brewers while improving to 5-4 on the season.

Adrian Houser (1-6) took the loss, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts.  Two of the five hits allowed were home runs. [Read more…]

Brewers extend win streak to four, sweep Royals

September 21, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers ran their win streak to a season-long four games, knocking off the Kansas City Royals 5-3 on Sunday at Miller Park.

Daniel Vogelbach drove in all five runs for the Brewers with two and three-run home runs and Josh Lindblom (2-3) tossed 5 1/3 innings of 3-hit, 1-run ball to secure the victory in the final home game of the season at Miller Park.

The Brewers improved to .500 (26-26) and remains tied with the Cincinnati Reds for third place in the Central Division, just a game behind second place St. Louis.  The Brewers control their own playoff destiny with three games against the Reds, followed by five against the Cardinals in St. Louis.  They’ll be trying to make the MLB postseason for the third straight season.

Vogelbach now has three home runs in 11 games with the Brewers.  He’s hitting .417 with 10 runs batted in since joining the team.

Brent Suter gave up a two-run homer to Salvador Perez in the ninth to make it a two run game.  When the Royals brought the tying run to the plate, the Brewers went to Josh Hader to close it out, collecting his 10th save of the season.

The Brewers send ace Brandon Woodruff (2-3, 3.45) to the mound tonight against Cincinnati’s Luis Castillo (3-5, 3.03).  First pitch is set for 5:40 p.m.

With the game tied 3-3 in the ninth, the Milwaukee Brewers called on their closer, Josh Hader to keep the game deadlocked.  But for the first time this season, Hader allowed a hit, in fact he allowed two as the Cleveland Indians pulled out a 4-3 win at Progressive Field.

The Indians Oscar Mercado had a leadoff double in the ninth and took third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Cesar Hernandez single to win it.

Hader hadn’t allowed a hit in his first 12 games, covering 11 2/3 innings and 47 batters.

The Brewers scored first, in the fourth inning when newcomer Daniel Vogelbach ripped a double to right to score Keston Hiura. [Read more…]
