UW’s Leonard plans to interview for Packers vacant defensive coordinator position

February 2, 2021 By Bill Scott

Jim Leonard

Wisconsin Badger defensive coordinator Jim Leonard is expected to interview for the vacant Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator position.  The Packers are looking for a replacement for Mike Pettine, who they decided not to bring back after his contract expired at the end of this past season.

Leonard has served as defensive coordinator at UW since 2017.  Last season, UW finished fifth nationally against the run (96.1 ypg) and fifth in total defense (299.9 ypg).

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur started interviewing candidates over the weekend.  The list of candidates includes Rams safeties coach Ejiro Evero, L.A. Chargers defensive passing game coordinator Joe Barry and current Packers secondary coach Jerry Gray, who has previous defensive coordinators experience with Buffalo and Tennessee. [Read more…]

Berger Could Return For Badgers Bowl Game

December 22, 2020 By Bill Scott

A decision by the Big Ten Conference to reduce the number of days players must sit out after contracting COVID-19 to 17 from 21 could put Wisconsin Badgers freshman running back Jalen Berger in the picture to play in the December 30th Duke’s Mayo Bowl game against Wake Forest.

Berger has played in just three games this season but still leads Wisconsin in rushing with 267 yards while averaging 5.9 yards a carry.

Berger tested positive for COVID-19 on Dec. 11, the day before Wisconsin played Iowa.

Both he and Nakia Watson missed last week’s game against Minnesota, as did wide receivers Kendrick Pryor and Danny Davis, as well as left tackle Cole Van Lanen.  Just how many of those players will be available against Wake Forest remains to be seen.

Badgers Offense Struggles Again In Loss At Iowa, Minnesota’s Next

December 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Paul Chryst

Another struggling offensive performance led to another Wisconsin defeat, 28-7 against the Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday afternoon in Iowa City.

The Hawkeyes broke open a close game with a pair of long touchdown drives in the third quarter, handing the Badgers their third straight loss.  The Badgers failed to reach 10-points for the third straight game.

The Badgers (2-3) fell below the .500 mark for just the second time under head coach Paul Chryst.

The Badgers played again without their top two receivers, Danny Davis and Kendric Pryor due to injury.  They also played without their leading rusher, freshman Jalen Berger, who came in averaging 89 yards a game on the ground, but tested positive for the coronavirus.

As a result, the Badgers offense managed just 225 yards and a lone touchdown by running back Nakia Watson.  The Badgers finished with 56 rushing yards on 33 carries.  Redshirt freshman quarterback Graham Mertz finished with 169 yards and an interception.

The Badgers will try to finish the season on a positive note and climb back to .500 when they host rival Minnesota at 3 p.m. on Saturday [Read more…]

Davis suspended by Badgers

August 22, 2018 By Bill Scott

Danny Davis

Wisconsin Badger sophomore wide receiver Danny Davis has been suspended for the first two games of the 2018 football season.  The suspension, which was announced by coach Paul Chryst on Wednesday, is for his connection to sexual assault charges against teammate Quintez Cephus.

Davis’ suspension comes a day after UW officials postponed Chryst’s media availability so additional information on allegations made against Cephus and Davis could be gathered.

Cephus faces two counts of sexual assault and is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.  He has been suspended under UW’s Student-Athlete Discipline Policy.

According to the criminal complaint against Cephus, Davis was present at the time of the alleged April incident and took at least one photo of one of the two women involved.  He hasn’t been charged with any crimes.

In a statement, Chryst said, “Should further information become available that warrants a reevaluation of the length of the suspension, I will assess that information.  We have a high standard of conduct within our football program and we cannot accept behavior that is not consistent with that standard.”

During the suspension, Davis will be allowed to practice with the team, but will not be available for games.

Cephus facing felony charges

August 21, 2018 By Bill Scott

Quintez Cephus

Wisconsin wide receiver Quintez Cephus has been charged with third-degree sexual assault and second-degree sex assault of an intoxicated victim.  Both of these offenses are felonies.

Maximum penalties for the second-degree sex assault of an intoxicated victim charge is 40 years in prison and/or a $100,000 fine.  The third-degree sexual assault charge carries with it a penalty of up to 10 years in prison and/or a $25,000 fine for the second charge.

The 20-year-old Cephus is due to make his first court appearance on Thursday morning.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez says Cephus is suspended from competition and practice pending the “availability of further information relating to the case.”

According to the criminal complaint, UW wide receiver Danny Davis, who is Cephus’ roommate, also was present at the time and took photos of one of the women.  Davis has not been charged with any crime and has not been suspended by the university.  UW officials have had no comment about Davis’ alleged involvement.
