Golden Eagles Win $1 Million TBT Championship (AUDIO)

The Marquette Golden Eagles alumni team knocked off Sideline Cancer 78-73 in the $1 million TBT championship game Tuesday night in Columbus, Ohio.

Travis Diener hit the game-winning three-pointer to lead the Golden Eagles to their first TBT title.  It comes after Marquette lost in the title game a year ago.

Darius Johnson-Odom was named to TBT’s All-Tournament Team and given TBT MVP for his efforts in the win, tallying 15 points and three assists.  Jamil Wilson, who joins Johnson-Odom on the All-Tournament Team, finished with 16 points and five rebounds.

Tuesday’s championship game concluded the 24-team event that began July 4, making TBT the first nationally-televised basketball tournament to be completed in the United States since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bucks hold first pre-draft workout

The Milwaukee Bucks held the first of several NBA pre-draft workouts at their

team training center in St. Francis. 

Sunday’s session was loaded with guards and included Jordan Taylor (Wisconsin) and Darius Johnson-Odom (Marquette).

Marquette advances to Sweet 16

Marquette got 17 points from Darius Johnson-Odom and 17 points and 13 rebounds from Jae Crowder as the Golden Eagles (27-7) held off the Murray State Racers (31-2) 62-53 on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles trailed 46-41 with just under seven and a half minutes to play before mounting their comeback.  Marquette will play in the Sweet 16 for the second straight season.

The Racers helped out in the second half, shooting just 31% from 3-point range and just 25% in the second half.

Marquette faces the winner of today’s Florida vs. Norfolk State game next week.

Marquette advances to second round

Jae Crowder scored 26 points and pulled down a career high 16 rebounds to lead the Marquette Golden Eagles to an 88-68 win over Brigham Young in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Louisville, Kentucky. 

The Golden Eagles jumped out to an 18-5 lead early but got off to a terrible start in the second half.  Marquette turned it over 6-times to start the second half and watched as BYU climbed to within 6-points (52-46). 

Marquette then rattled off 8-straight points, followed by a 9-0 run and never looked back. 

Darius Johnson-Odom scored 20-points, Davante Gardner had 15 points and 6 rebounds and Todd Mayo had 10 to help Crowder.

The Golden Eagles advanced to face Murray State (31-1) on Saturday in Louisville.  The winner of that game advances to the Sweet 16.

Marquette is one and done in Big East Tournament

The Marquette Golden Eagles had a double-bye into the Quarterfinal round of the Big East Tournament, going into their game with Louisville plenty rested.  But the Golden Eagles still committed 26 turnovers and lost to the Cardinals 84-71 to fall out of the Big East Tournament.

Darius Johnson-Odom had 23 points, but Louisville held Big East Conference Player of the Year Jae Crowder to just 10 points.

Louisville (24-9) faces No. 23 Notre Dame in tonight’s semifinals. 

Marquette now gets some rest and will wait until Sunday evenings selection show to find out who they’ll face in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Marquette falls apart defensively, loses at Cincy

JaQuon Parker scored a career-high 28 points to lead Cincinnati to a 72-61 win over 8th ranked Marquette in Cincinnati on Wednesday night.

Marquette (24-6, 13-4) had won five straight, including a 95-78 win over the Bearcats in Milwaukee on Feb. 11.  The rematch was all Cincinnati.

The Bearcats repeatedly drove through Marquette’s defense for layups.  Defensively, Cincinnati’s front line blocked 9 Marquette shots with 7 of those being credited to Justin Jackson. 

Darius Johnson-Odom had 18 points and Jae Crowder added 17 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.

Cincinnati has won 6 of their last 8 games and improved to 5-3 against ranked teams this season.

Crowder leads Marquette to 4th straight win

Jae Crowder scored 27 points and Darius Johnson-Odom added 21 to lead 10th ranked Marquette to a 82-65 win over Rutgers in Big East play on Wednesday.

Crowder’s line also includes 7 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 3 blocked shots.

The win was the fourth straight and 11th in the last 12 games for the Golden Eagles (23-5, 12-3 Big East).  It also keeps Marquette tied with Notre Dame for second place in the Big East, trailing first place Syracuse.

A quick turn-a-round for Marquette.  They’ll face West Virginia in Morgantown on Friday night.

Marquette wins 5th straight

The Marquette Golden Eagles forced 22 turnovers and rolled to a 67-47 win over the South Florida Bulls in Big East College basketball action on Tuesday night at the Bradley Center.

The 17th ranked Golden Eagles (17-4 overall, 6-2 Big East) won their 5th in a row.  They got 17 points from Darius Johnson-Odom and 15 points each from DaVante Gardner and Jae Crowder.

Coach Buzz Williams also earned his 100th career win at Marquette.  The Golden Eagles held the Bulls to 32% shooting from the field. 

Up next, a trip to Villanova on Saturday.

Strong second half lifts Marquette

The 25th ranked Marquette Golden Eagles brew open a close game and knocked off St. John’s, 83-64 Wednesday night at the Bradley Center.

Davante Gardner set career highs with 22 points and 15 rebounds to lead Marquette.  Darius Johnson-Odom added 20 points for the Golden Eagles in the win.

Marquette (13-4, 2-2 Big East) it 21 of their 31 second half field goal attempts in outscoring St. John’s 52-32.  The Golden Eagles held advantages of 34-14 in the paint, 17-5 off turnovers and 21-8 off the fast break.

Johnson-Odom made his first seven shots of the second half and scored 18 of his 20 points after the break. 

The Golden Eagles earned the victory after a couple of road losses to Georgetown and Syracuse last week.  They’ll host Pittsburgh on Saturday at the Bradley Center.

Marquette blows lead, falls to Georgetown

9th ranked Georgetown rallied from 17 down to beat #20 Marquette 73-70 last night.

It’s the 3rd loss in the last 5-games for the Golden Eagles, who got 18 points from Darius Johnson-Odom and 17 from Jae Crowder. 

Marquette plays at top ranked Syracuse on Saturday.
