UW Athletics Hall of Fame to add 11-member class

June 28, 2017 By Bill Scott

Eleven former Badgers will be inducted into the University of Wisconsin Athletics Hall of Fame on September 29 at Union South.  The class includes two gold medalists, a pair of NCAA champions, an NHL all-star, two Rose Bowl winning quarterbacks and a WNBA player.

Inductees are Sara Bauer, women’s hockey; Darrell Bevell, football; Brooks Bollinger, football; Brian Elliott, men’s hockey; Tamara Moore, women’s basketball; Arlie Schardt, men’s cross country and track and field; Bob Suter, men’s hockey; Tracy Webster, men’s basketball; Chris Solinsky, track & field.  Former baseball coach Guy Lowman was selected in the coach/staff category while UW Marching Band Director Mike Leckrone was honored in the special service category.

Bauer was UW’s first Patty Kazmaier Award winner as the nation’s top player in 2006.  The forward led UW to back-to-back NCAA titles in 2006 and 2007 and was a two-time USCHO.com and WCHA Player of the Year.  She wrapped up her career as Wisconsin’s all-time scoring leader and was a two-time UW female Athlete of the Year.

Bevell was under center for one of the greatest seasons in Wisconsin football history, leading the Badgers to a 10-1-1 record, the 1993 Big Ten championship and their first trip to the Rose Bowl in 31 years.  His memorable, and unlikely, 21-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter helped secure the UW program’s first win in Pasadena.  A four-year starter, Bevell finished his career as the Badgers’ career leader in passing yards (7,686), completions (646), attempts (1,052), completion percentage (61.4%) and touchdown passes (59). Andersen leaves Wisconsin after just two years on the job (Video)

Barry Alvarez press conference

Barry Alvarez press conference

For just the second time in the last three years, Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez will spend the holiday season looking for a new head football coach.  He must also consider whether he’ll accept the seniors invitation to coach the Badgers in the New Years Day Outback Bowl after Gary Andersen said he’s leaving Wisconsin after just two seasons on the job.

Andersen has accepted the head coaching position at Oregon State, replacing Mike Riley who left the school to take over at Nebraska.  Oregon State plans to introduce Andersen at a news conference on Friday.  Anderson told Alvarez he was leaving Madison for family reasons.

Alvarez certainly didn’t see this coming.  But what’s somewhat concerning is that Wisconsin has all of a sudden become a stepping stone job.  Alvarez will be looking to change that with his next coaching hire.

The Wisconsin athletic director said he wants to find a new coach with head coaching experience.  He said it has to be a good fit for Wisconsin and Badger nation is hopeful the next coach will be somebody that wants to stick around for a while. [Read more…]

Bevell running the offensive show in Seattle (AUDIO)

January 31, 2014 By Bill Scott

Seattle and Denver are putting the wraps on their Super Bowl practice week, getting ready for Sunday’s Super Bowl 48.

The Seahawks played most of the season without WR’s Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice.  Rice was lost for the season, while Harvin has just returned after missing most of the season.

The Seattle offense has geared itself around running back Marshawn

Lynch.  Russell Wilson has been asked to play ball control, make an occasional big play, whether it be with his arm or his feet.  WR Doug Baldwin has made a bigger impact in place of Harvin and Rice and now Harvin is back and expected to play on Sunday.

But the Seahawks have basically asked their top ranked defense to make the big plays and keep them in position to win games.

Former Badger quarterback Darrell Bevell is the offensive coordinator in Seattle, running the offensive show.  Our Super Bowl correspondent Mike Clemens caught up with Bevell at the Super Bowl this week.

Who’s next in Madison for the Badgers (AUDIO)

December 4, 2012 By Bill Scott

Why are the Wisconsin Badgers playing in a third straight Rose Bowl, primarily because of their defense.  That’s why defensive coordinator Chris Ash could get a strong look from Wisconsin Athletic Director Chris Ash to replace Bret Bielema as head coach in Madison.

Wisconsin held eight opponents to 14 points or fewer in four quarters of action, including six straight games.

In his first season as co-defensive coordinator last season, Ash’s defensive unit ranked 13th in the country in scoring defense (19.0) points a game and 15th in the nation in total defense.  Ten of the Badgers’ 14 opponents failed to score more than 17 points. [Read more…]
