Packers release Shepherd, sign Austin

December 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers made it official, releasing receiver Darrius Shepherd on Tuesday, making room for newly signed wide receiver/returner Tavon Austin.  Austin was the eighth overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Shepherd started the season on the Packers practice squad before being signed to the active roster on Sept. 26.  He had just five receptions for 46 yards and had a costly fumble on a kickoff return in the teams loss at Indianapolis.  He could still be added back to the practice squad if he clears waivers.

Austin will be eligible to practice with the Packers on Wednesday.

Packers remain winless against winning teams (AUDIO)

November 23, 2020 By Bill Scott

Marquez Valdes-Scantling

For only the second time this season, the Green Bay Packers faced a team with a winning record and lost.  After scoring 28-points in the first half and leading 28-14 at halftime, the Packers (7-3) went on to lose to the Indianapolis Colts (7-3) 34-31 in overtime on Sunday.

The loss dropped the Packers out of the top position in the NFC playoff picture, still with six games left.

The Packers played arguably their best half of football this season in the first half, then played one of their worst in the second half.

Aaron Rodgers completed 27 of 38 for 311 yards, three touchdowns and one interception.  His favorite target, Davante Adams, caught seven passes for 106 yards and a score.  But the Packers ground attack managed just 66 yards on 18 carries with Aaron Jones finishing with 41 yards on 10 carries. Packers receiver Lazard out indefinitely

October 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

WR Allen Lazard

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Allen Lazard had a career game last Sunday night (6 receptions for 146 yards and a touchdown).  He played the entire game and there was no indication afterwards in speaking with reporters that he had suffered an injury.  Yet, as ESPN first reported, Lazard underwent core muscle surgery and is out indefinitely.  The team listed him on their injury report Thursday with a core muscle injury.

Fellow receiver Davante Adams practiced on Thursday.  He said afterwards that he still doesn’t know if he’ll be available to play on Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons.

At the moment, the Packers have three other receivers on their active roster.  Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Darrius Shepherd and Malik Taylor.  Shepherd was signed off the practice squad last week. [Read more…]

Packers wrap up training camp, head into regular season mode

August 31, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers wrapped up Training Camp with a practice inside Lambeau Field on Sunday.  Packers coach Matt LaFleur used the 2 hour, 14 minute practice to get his team ready for the Sept. 13th season opener against the Minnesota Vikings.

Of the 100 or so plays run from scrimmage, the starters got 51 of them.  It would have been more, but a couple of players got nicked up late in the practice and the coach decided to pull the plug.

“They’ve got to realize that two weeks from today we’re going to be playing our first game,” LaFleur said.  “So, they’ve got to stack consistent practices on top of each other.”

The Packers begin regular season planning and practice this week.  Players get a workout on Monday, an off day on Tuesday and won’t practice again until Wednesday.  They’ll spend the rest of this week giving GM Brian Gutekunst as much [Read more…]

Adams returns to practice

October 31, 2019 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

Pro Bowl wide receiver Davante Adams is back on the practice field again, trying to work his way back into the lineup when the Green Bay Packers face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday in L.A.

It was a walkthrough on Wednesday, but Adams returned to the field again on Thursday, this time in helmet and pads, a good indicator that Adams could be ready to play on Sunday.

“We’ll take it day by day and see how he does,” coach Matt LaFleur said.  “When he’s ready to go, we’ll be ecstatic.”

Adams missed the last four games with a turf toe injury.

Packers announce roster moves

After releasing TE Evan Baylis and WR Darrius Shepherd earlier in the week, the Packers signed both players to their practice squad.  The Packers released WR Keon Hatcher from the practice squad.

Sack celebrations a thing of the past in Green Bay

October 18, 2019 By Bill Scott

Za’Darius Smith

Za’Darius Smith is second on the Green Bay Packers team with six quarterback sacks and each one has drawn a more elaborate sack celebration.

“I had one for this week,” Smith said Thursday.  “It was going to be nice.  Coach (Matt LaFleur), he felt situations during that time could affect the punt team or (if) they want to go for fourth down, I’m taking up too much time.”

So for now, the sack celebrations are history.

Smith came up with the sleepy-time celebration that he unveiled Monday against the Lions after he missed a meeting last week.  He was fined and decided to let everyone know he got caught napping with a little on-field celebration.

Za’Darius Smith has six sacks in six games this season.  Teammate Preston Smith leads the way wit

h seven and even without a sack celebration, both should continue to cause havoc with the opponents passing game. [Read more…]

Packers send Davis to Raiders

September 19, 2019 By Bill Scott

Trevor Davis

Just over two weeks into the season, the Green Bay Packers sent wide receiver and return specialist Trevor Davis to the Oakland Raiders with a reported sixth-round draft pick coming back to Green Bay in return.

On Monday, the Packers had claimed kick return specialist Tremon Smith off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs.  Smith was a sixth-round pick of the Chiefs last year and finished fourth in the NFL in kick returns with a 26.9 yard average.

Smith had experimented as a running back during Chiefs training camp this past summer, but the Packers plan to use him on defense.

Smith has not returned punts in the NFL.  That job could go to undrafted rookie Darrius Shepherd.

Davis had just one catch this season for the Packers, good for 28 yards in the opener against the Bears.  He had three punt returns for one yard to go along with seven fair catches.

The Raiders are scheduled to face the Packers, on Oct. 20 at Lambeau Field.

Takeaways lead Packers to exhibition win

August 9, 2019 By Bill Scott

Deshone Kizer (File Photo)

Last season, the Packers had just seven interceptions all season.  They tied for third fewest takeaways in the league.  It’s only one preseason game, but the Packers took the ball away four times on Thursday night and held on for a 28-26 victory over the Houston Texans at Lambeau Field.

It was the Packers youth that did the job on Thursday night as 26 players didn’t suit up for the game and at least 14 of them were healthy scratches.

Packers rookie corner Ka’dar Hollman got the ball rolling on Houston’s very first drive, cutting in front of Houston receiver Vyncint Smith to get the pick.

The second takeaway came after a 56-yard JK Scott punt.  Returner Keke Coutee couldn’t handled it and Equanimeous St. Brown recovered it in the endzone for a Packers touchdown. [Read more…]
