Packers add Brooks to help pass rush

August 31, 2017 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers will have a little more than a week to get Ahmad Brooks up to speed before facing Seattle in the season opener on Sunday, Sept. 10, at Lambeau Field.

The Packers agreed to a deal with veteran outside linebacker on Wednesday, a deal that could pay him as much as $5 million.

The 33-year-old Brooks spent the last nine seasons with the San Francisco 49ers and ranks third in franchise history with 51 1/2 sacks.

The Packers entered training camp without Julius Peppers and Datone Jones, who left in free agency.  They were hoping Jayrone Elliott and Kyler Fackrell would step in and take over the lost production.  When it didn’t happen, the Packers had their eyes open for help and the timing of Brooks release from the 49ers couldn’t have been better.

Brooks has had at least five sacks in each of the past eight seasons.  His career high of 8 1/2 came in 2013. [Read more…]

Packers to host free agent Brooks today

August 29, 2017 By Bill Scott

Kyler Fackrell

The Green Bay Packers are expected to host free-agent outside linebacker Ahmad Brooks today.  The decision to bring in a veteran is a clear sign that the Packers aren’t happy with the current level of production beyond Clay Matthews and Nick Perry.

The Packers let Julius Peppers and Datone Jones get away in free agency, ready to give Jayrone Elliott and Kyler Fackrell more of an opportunity.

Through three preseason games, Elliott and Fackrell have combined for five tackles and no sacks.

The Packers haven’t been able to stay healthy as well.  Matthews dropped out early on Saturday with an undisclosed injury and Perry later left with an ankle injury.

Elliott has had to deal with back spasms the last couple of weeks and he had to leave Saturday’s game at Denver early.

The Packers also haven’t been able to get former Badger Vince Biegel on the field.  The fourth round pick hasn’t practiced since rookie orientation in May when he broke a bone in his foot.  After surgery, he’s been rehabbing, trying to get back, but its an injury that requires a tremendous amount of patience.  Biegel is currently on the PUP list and could remain there through the first six weeks of the season.

Elliott agrees to one-year deal with Packers

March 14, 2017 By Bill Scott

After visits with Buffalo and Pittsburgh, free-agent outside linebacker Jayrone Elliott decided to return to the Green Bay Packers.  Elliott has agreed to a one-year deal with the Packers, worth a reported $1.6 million.

Elliott had offers from both the Bills and Steelers, but with Julius Peppers already signed by Carolina and Datone Jones still unsigned, his best chance at a larger role may come with the Packers.

Elliott was supposed to be a restricted free agent, but the Packers didn’t tender him.

During the last two seasons, Elliott had four sacks in limited playing time.  Most of his contributions have been on special teams where he led the Packers in tackles last season and ranked third in 2015.

Packers offense comes to life in win over Detroit

September 26, 2016 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

After weeks of offensive struggles, the Green Bay Packers came to life on Sunday, beating division foe Detroit 34-27 in the home opener at Lambeau Field.

The Lions were missing top defensive players Ziggy Ansah and DeAndre Levy and the Packers showed no mercy, putting 31-points on the board in the first half and taking a 31-3 lead into the locker room at halftime.

It was the offense that Packers fans are used to seeing.  Aaron Rodgers tossed four touchdown passes in the first half for the second time in his career, two of the four to Jordy Nelson.  Rodgers ended up completing 15 of 24 passes for the game, finishing with a 129.3 passer rating.  He ended a string of 14 consecutive games without a passer rating of 100 or more. Green Bay Packers defensive lineman Datone Jones has been suspended without pay for the first game of the upcoming 2015 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

According to a statement issued by the NFL, Jones will be eligible to return to the Packers’ active roster on Monday, September 14 following the team’s September 13 season opener against the Chicago Bears.

Jones is eligible to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

Jones needs to play better

November 1, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers were looking for Datone Jones to improve their pass rush, but

Datone Jones

the first round draft pick out of UCLA hasn’t made much of an impact so far.

Jones does not have a sack yet and just seven tackles to date.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he’s happy with Jones progress but he wants to see more, not only from Jones, but from all their players.

WRN Sports Daily (Packer first rounders have had tough luck) (Video)

Green Bay Packers first round draft pick Datone Jones left the practice field this

afternoon with a left ankle injury.  He left the first preseason game against Arizona with the same injury, just one play into his first game.

There’s certainly no indication that Jones will miss any regular season time, but just think about the bad luck the Packers have had with their first round picks.

You have to go back to 2009 when they picked both B.J. Raji and Clay Matthews.  2012 top pick Nick Perry missed most of his rookie season with an injury.  Derek Sherrod (2011) broke his leg in his rookie season and is still fighting to return nearly two years later.  And 2010 top pick Bryan Bulaga has made significant contributions to the team, yet missed the second half of last season (HIP) and is out all of this year (ACL).

My thoughts on this topic and the latest on the Packers follow in today’s WRN Sports Daily.

Packers’ injuries are mounting

August 7, 2013 By Bill Scott

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jordy Nelson will miss the remainder of the

training camp after undergoing knee surgery on Monday.  Packers coach Mike McCarthy said the team hopes he will be ready for the regular season opener against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 8.

Nelson’s surgery was performed to correct a nerve issue in the knee that has bothered him since his college days at Kansas State.

Nelson missed 4+ games last season and finished with 49 catches for 745 yards and seven touchdowns.

Fellow receiver Randall Cobb also left Tuesday’s workout with a biceps injury.  RB Alex Green (knee) and tight end Ryan Taylor (knee) were also held out of practice.  Rookie first round draft pick Datone Jones didn’t practice because of illness.

Bryan Bulaga

The Packers consider Bryan Bulaga’s torn ACL a season ending injury.  But Bulaga is seeking a second opinion, still hoping to play this season.

Datone Jones among the Packers shining early (AUDIO)

July 29, 2013 By Bill Scott

The 2013 draft class may be one of the most anticipated group of rookies in some time for the Green Bay Packers.  With the way 2013 ended for the defense (Colin Kaepernick running wild on them), finding more play makers was a priority in the off season.  Sunday was the first padded practice of camp which gave the coaches a better look at their rookies.

Datone Jones was the top pick of the Packers this past April.  Green Bay took the defensive end with the 26th selection in the first round hoping to add some pass rush on the line.  Head Coach Mike McCarthy was happy with what he saw from Jones Sunday…

Packers sign Jones in time for camp

July 25, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers finally have all eleven 2013 draft picks under contract.  The last domino fell in place two days before the start of training camp.

Packers first round pick Datone Jones reportedly agreed to his rookie deal on Wednesday.  The 26th pick in this April’s draft will reportedly make $7.7-million over four-years.

There wasn’t any fear that the rookie defensive end out of UCLA would end up without a deal when camp starts Friday morning.  In the new collective bargaining agreement, rookie wage slotting was implemented based on where a player was picked.

Training camp opens for the Packers Friday morning at 8:20 AM.  The team will be in shells for Friday’s work and also Saturday’s 8:20 AM practice.  Sunday will be the first full-pad practice of camp and will also start at 8:20 AM.  Monday is an off day for the team.
