Packers bounce back to beat Texans in Houston

October 26, 2020 By Bill Scott

Davante Adams

One week after suffering their first loss of the season in Tampa, the Green Bay Packers rebounded to rout the Houston Texans 35-20 on Sunday in Houston.

With four starters sidelined, the Packers turned to wide receiver Davante Adams, who combined with quarterback Aaron Rodgers for a big day.

Rodgers passed for 283 yards and four touchdowns, while Adams set career highs with 13 receptions for 196 yards to go along with two touchdowns.

The Packers jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime and had a 28-7 advantage after three quarters.  The offense converted on seven of their 12 third down opportunities with all seven coming on Adams receptions.

Rodgers also hit Malik Taylor and tight end Jace Sternberger for their first career regular-season touchdowns.

The Packers started the game without David Bakhtiari and Aaron Jones on offense and Kevin King and safety Darnell Savage on defense.  They lost safety Raven Green with an oblique injury and linebacker Krys Barnes with a shoulder injury. [Read more…]

Bakhtiari sits out Wednesday, questionable for Sunday

October 22, 2020 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

After leaving last Sunday’s loss at Tampa with a chest injury, Green Bay Packers Pro Bowl left tackle David Bakhtiari didn’t practice on Wednesday.  It was a day that the Packers went with a shorter, lighter practice after coach Matt LaFleur told reporters earlier in the day that the team would work inside the Hutson Center because they’re banged up.  A total of thirteen players showed up on the teams injury report, which was put out later in the day.

Tyler Lancaster (shoulder), Darnell Savage (quadriceps), Robert Tonyan (ankle) and Tyler Ervin (wrist), also didn’t practice on Wednesday.  A number of other players, including cornerback Kevin King, were limited participants.

Rodgers less than thrilled with question

The first question delivered to Aaron Rodgers during his weekly session with reporters got under his skin on Wednesday.  Rodgers was asked if opponents had figured out coach Matt LaFleur’s offense and his response was short and pointed.

“So because of one game, what is it you’re implying?”  When asked again, Rodgers said, “One out of five.”

Rodgers continued to answer questions, but near the end, he was told by another reporter that he seemed down in the dumps.

“I’m definitely not down in the dumps, so don’t project that onto me.  That’s not a reality,” he said.

Packers suffer first loss, Rodgers picked twice (AUDIO)

October 19, 2020 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Raymond James Stadium in Tampa has been a house of horrors in Aaron Rodgers career and it continued on Sunday.  Rodgers threw a pair of interceptions, including just the third pick-six of his career, sending the Green Bay Packers (4-1) to a 38-10 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, their first defeat of the season.

The two interceptions were the first of the season for Rodgers.  The first pick came on a third down with Rodgers looking for his favorite receiver, Davante Adams in the flat.  Buccaneers safety Jamel Dean read Rodgers all the way, stepped in front of Adams and scampered 32-yards for a touchdown.

Two of the three interceptions thrown by Rodgers that were turned into interceptions, took place at Raymond James Stadium.  The pick-six started a Tampa Bay run of 38 straight points for the Buccaneers, after they originally fell behind 10-0.

Just as stunning came Rodgers second interception of the day, just two passes later.  Davante Adams was the intended target again, but the ball was tipped and it landed in the arms of safety Mike Edwards, who returned it to the 2-yard line, where the Bucs scored a play later on a Ronald Jones II touchdown run.  Jones rushed for 113 yards on 23 carries and scored two touchdowns against the Packers defense. Packers sign Kenny Clark to contract extension

August 15, 2020 By Bill Scott

Kenny Clark

The Green Bay Packers signed defensive lineman Kenny Clark to a four-year, $70-million contract extension that makes him the highest-paid nose tackle in NFL history.

The deal also makes Clark the 12th-highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.  It includes a $25 million signing bonus and runs through the 2024 season.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Clark will earn $37 million in the first two years of the deal.

Clark was the Packers’ first-round pick in 2016.  He has recorded six sacks in each of his last two seasons, earning a berth in the Pro Bowl in 2019.  In four NFL seasons, Clark has 16.5 sacks, 193 tackles and four forced fumbles (and recoveries). [Read more…]

Bulaga gets three-year deal with the Chargers

March 18, 2020 By Bill Scott

Bryan Bulaga

Bryan Bulaga had spent his entire career with the Green Bay Packers, after being drafted in the first round back in 2010.  On Tuesday, Bulaga agreed to a three-year, $30-million deal with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Bulaga started 111 of his 115 games, having gone through a pair of ACL injuries in 2013 and 2017.

The Packers counted on Bulaga’s leadership during his time in Green Bay.  They’ll now look to veterans David Bakhtiari and Corey Linsley for some of that responsibility.

The Packers did sign tackle Rick Wagner, the former Badger from West Allis, to replace Bulaga.  Wagner has started 87 of his 102 games and was released by the Detroit Lions in a cost-cutting measure.

Bakhtiari returns, listed as questionable for Sunday

September 13, 2019 By Bill Scott

David Bakhtiari

After missing practice on Thursday with a sore back, Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari returned to practice with the Packers on Friday and is officially listed as questionable on the team’s Friday injury report.

Bakhtiari said his back began “not cooperating” after a practice this week.  He was a limited participant on Wednesday.

“I think we’re going to monitor the next 48 hours and see how it is.  Obviously, we have a lot of time.  So, hopefully,” Bakhtiari said.

Bakhtiari missed the practice reps that would have helped him prepare for Minnesota defensive end Everson Griffen. [Read more…]

Adams, Rodgers selected to Pro Bowl

December 18, 2018 By Bill Scott

The NFL released its Pro Bowl recipients on Tuesday and the list includes a pair of Green Bay Packers.

Wide receiver Davante Adams and quarterback Aaron Rodgers were both named to the Pro Bowl by the league.

For Adams, it’s his second trip to the Pro Bowl and his first original selection after being chosen as an injury replacement last season.  He reached 100 receptions for the first time in his career this season, which currently ranks as the fourth-highest single season total in franchise history, trailing WR’s Robert Brooks (102 in 1995) and Sterling Sharpe (108 in 1992 and 112 in 1993).  Adams has 1,315 receiving yards in 2018, currently the eighth most in a season in franchise history and 205 yards away from passing Jordy Nelson (1,519 in 2014) for the franchise record.  Adams is tied for No. 2 in the NFL this season with 12 receiving touchdowns.  He is the only player in the NFL to register 70-plus receptions and 10-plus receiving touchdowns in each of the last three seasons (2016-18).

For Rodgers, it marks the seventh Pro Bowl selection of his career (2009, 2011-12, 2014-16).  He has the second most [Read more…]

Packers playoff hopes hanging by a thread

November 26, 2018 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers dropped their sixth straight road game this season, falling to the Minnesota Vikings 24-17 at U.S. Bank Stadium on Sunday night.  The Packers (4-6-1) now need to win all five of their remaining games and get help to find a spot into the post season playoffs.

The Packers were quick to start again, jumping out to 7-0 and 14-7 leads, but like previous games, the Packers fell apart.  Nothing seemed to go right for the Packers the rest of the way.

The Green Bay defense couldn’t get a take/away, while Tramon Williams turned it over on a punt return which gave the ball back to the Vikings.  Minnesota wouldn’t score after going for it on fourth and short, but they did take more time off the clock. [Read more…]

Bakhtiari expected to be OK

August 7, 2018 By Bill Scott

#69 David Bakhtiari

Green Bay Packers left tackle David Bakhtiari appears to have avoided a serious injury.

Bakhtiari was hurt during the teams Family Night practice on Saturday and was carted off to the locker room.  But Packers coach Mike McCarthy said before practice on Monday that Bakhtiari’s injury is not of the long-term nature and he will be evaluated as he goes through rehab.

Bakhtiari’s value to the Packers is substantial.  It’s hard to imagine a player that possesses more value, other than Aaron Rodgers and maybe wide receiver Davante Adams.

Kyle Murphy is expected to take Bakhtiari’s place with the first unit until he can return.

The Packers are also got right tackle Bryan Bulaga back after an ACL injury knocked him out of action last season.

The Packers also placed linebacker Jake Ryan on injured reserve.  They had defensive backs Kevin King (shoulder) and Jaire Alexander (groin) sit out of practice on Monday with injury.

Packers blanked in Pro Bowl voting

December 20, 2017 By Bill Scott

Mike Daniels (76)

The Green Bay Packers didn’t have a single player named to the Pro Bowl.  They’re one of five teams that were shutout in the selection process, joining the New York Jets, Cleveland, Indianapolis and the Chicago Bears.

It was the first time since 2005 that the Packers didn’t have a single player voted to the Pro Bowl.

Players that were worthy of selection include wide receiver Davante Adams, as well as left tackle David Bakhtiari and defensive tackle Mike Daniels.

Adams ranks second in the NFL with 10 touchdown catches and he did it while missing starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers for seven games.  But the competition at wide receiver is high and can be one of the most difficult positions to crack.

Bakhtiari went to the Pro Bowl as an alternate last year but missed four games early in the season with a hamstring injury.  He was voted an alternate, but not a first alternate.

Daniels is joined by fullback Aaron Ripkowski as first alternates.  It’s the third time that Daniels has been named a Pro Bowl alternate.
