Brewers send Phelps to Phillies for three minor leaguers

August 31, 2020 By Bill Scott

David Phelps

The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired three players to be named from the Philadelphia Phillies in a deal prior to today’s trade deadline, sending reliever David Phelps to the Phillies.

Phelps, who signed with the Brewers as a free agent in January, went 2-3 with a 2.77 ERA in 12 appearances this season.  He held opponents to a .156 batting average.

Phelps returned from “Tommy John” surgery last season, appearing in 41 games between Toronto and the Chicago Cubs.

Suter to start against Pirates

The Milwaukee Brewers made a number of moves today and announced that left hander Brent Suter would start Monday nights series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Miller Park.

The Brewers also placed Brandon Woodruff on the paternity list and sent Corey Knebel to the Alternate Training Site in Appleton on a rehab assignment.

The Brewers recalled right handed pitchers Trey Supak and Justin Topa from the teams Alternate Training Site.

Brewers snap 4-game slide, beat Reds

Entering Monday nights series opener against Cincinnati, the Milwaukee Brewers had been outscored 37-5 in the opening two innings of games this season.  Facing Reds starter Trevor Bauer, who entered the game with the majors best ERA at 0.68, wasn’t looking good for the Brewers.  Not to mention, Bauer allowed just one run on three hits while striking out 12 in a 8-3 Reds victory over the Brewers on August 7.

The recipe for success wasn’t a good one, but the Brewers had other ideas.

Justin Smoak’s first-inning RBI single put the Brewers up early and they would never trail in a 4-2 win over the Reds at Miller Park.  Smoak also clubbed a two-run homer, while Omar Narvaez also went deep as the Brewers had a 4-0 lead in the first four innings, on the way to victory. [Read more…]

Brewers swept by Pirates (Audio)

August 24, 2020 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

The Pittsburgh Pirates entered their three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers with just four wins (4-17) and the worst offense in baseball.  When the smoke cleared on Sunday, the Pirates had a three-game sweep, outscoring the Brewers 24-11 in the series.

The Brewers were trying to salvage the final game of the series on Sunday at PNC Park, leading 4-3 in the 8th.  That’s when Pittsburgh’s Gregory Polanco clubbed a two-run home run off of reliever David Phelps to give the Pirates a 5-4, come-from-behind win.  It was the first home run allowed by Phelps in 10 appearances this season.

Once again, the Brewers struggled out of the gates, falling behind 2-0.  They went hitless in the first three innings and have now been outscored 37-5 in the first two innings of their 26 games.

The Brewers would eventually tie it 2-2 on a run scoring double by Justin Smoak and a run scoring single  by Omar Narvaez.  They then took the lead in the sixth when Smoak clubbed a 2-run homer for a 4-2 lead. [Read more…]

Brewers drop home opener to White Sox

August 4, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers finally got to play a home opener at Miller Park, but it didn’t work out the way they had planned.  The Brewers jumped out to a 4-2 lead, then saw their bullpen surrender four runs in a 6-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Monday night.

The Brewers were playing their first game since a victory in Pittsburgh last Wednesday.

Brett Anderson got his first start in a Brewers uniform but took a drive off of his left foot from Chicago’s Luis Robert.  Yoan Mancada doubled him to third.  Jose Abreu drove in a run with a ground ball and Yasmani Grandal gave the White Sox a 2-0 lead with a sacrifice fly.

The Brewers cut the lead to 1 in the bottom half of the first when Christian Yelich snapped an 0-for-19 streak with a two-out double.  Avisail Garcia followed with a double of his own to score Yelich.

The Brewers took the lead in the 5th when Garcia drove in two runs with a single to left.  Ben Gamel’s sixth inning single to center scored Justin Smoak to put the Brewers up 4-2. [Read more…]

Brewers rebound, beat Pirates in extra innings

July 28, 2020 By Bill Scott

Ryan Braun

After another quiet offensive performance, the Milwaukee Brewers finally came alive late, rallying to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 in 11 innings at PNC Park on Monday night.

Trailing 5-1 heading into the 9th inning, the Brewers scored four times to force extra innings.  The rally was capped off by Ryan Braun’s two-out, two-run double to left.

Eric Sogard, with a runner at second base to start every extra inning, doubled to led off the 11th to plate the winning run.  Veteran reliever David Phelps held the Pirates in check during the 10th and 11th innings to secure the win.

The win is the seventh straight for the Brewers over the Pirates dating back to last season and the 16th in the last 20 games.

It’s just the seventh time in franchise history that the Brewers have come from behind by four or more runs in the ninth inning to win and the first time since 2004.

After pitching a scoreless first inning, Brewers starter Adrian Houser came back out for Craig Counsell’s Brewers following a 1-hour 42-minute rain delay.  Houser surrendered a solo home run to Pittsburgh’s Colin Moran, the only run he allowed in five innings of work.

The win evened the Brewers record at 2-2.  They’ll send Josh Lindblom to the mound in game two of the series on Tuesday night.
