Sherrod on the shelf for the rest of the season

November 28, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers won’t get any help on their offensive line from former

Derek Sherrod

1st round draft pick Derek Sherrod.

The Packers retained Sherrod on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which means he’s out for the season.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy also said running back Cedric Benson won’t return to practice this week and expects to relay more information on Benson today.  Benson was expected to see a specialist this week because his Lisfranc injury hasn’t been healing as hoped.  If Benson needs surgery, that will likely end his season.

Surgery ends Perry’s season with Packers

November 8, 2012 By Bill Scott

Nick Perry

The Green Bay Packers made it official on Wednesday, placing 1st round draft pick Nick Perry on injured reserve after left wrist surgery.  Perry underwent surgery this week after trying to play with a cast for several weeks.

Tight end Andrew Quarless was moved from the physically unable to perform list to the 53-man roster, ending an 11-month recovery from two torn ligaments in his right knee.

Last year’s number-one draft pick, tackle Derek Sherrod was declared eligible to practice, giving him three weeks from yesterday (Wednesday) to get himself ready to play.

After three weeks, the Packers can either activate Sherrod, put him on injured reserve or cut him.

It was just a couple of weeks ago that coach Mike McCarthy said Sherrod wasn’t ready to start practicing.  Since then however, Right tackle Bryan Bulaga suffered a hip injury and the Packers are hoping Sherrod can help them this season in a backup role.

Sherrod likely headed for PUP

August 21, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers were hoping former first round draft pick Derek

Derek Sherrod

Sherrod would battle for the starting left tackle job in training camp.  Now it appears the Packers will likely have to settle for Sherrod’s return no later than mid-season.

Sherrod broke two bones in his lower right leg last December 18.  Outside linebacker Frank Zombo (hamstring) and tight end Andrew Quarless (Knee) are all on the physically unable to perform list.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy hinted at his Monday press conference that all three could open the regular season on the PUP list.  All three still have yet to pass their training camp physicals.

Under the PUP rules, if a player is on that list to start the season, he must remain there for the first six weeks.  They’ll then get the next couple of weeks to get ready to play.

McCarthy said all three players will be at the wire.

Still no word on LT Marshall Newhouse

August 5, 2012 By Bill Scott

With the Green Bay Packers returning to the practice field tonight (7pm), it’s still uncertain whether or not LT Marshall Newhouse will

Derek Sherrod

be with them.

Newhouse left Friday night’s Family Night scrimmage with an undisclosed injury and he wasn’t in the locker room during the noon hour when reporters had access to players.  Coach Mike McCarthy won’t be addressing the media until after tonight’s practice.

While the Packers have their five starters set on the offensive line, an injury could be a big issue for the Packers.

Derek Sherrod is listed as the Packers No. 2 left tackle, but he remains on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list as he continues his recovery from a broken leg suffered last December.  Coach Mike McCarthy last week didn’t sound to optimistic about a quick return for Sherrod.

That leaves Herb Taylor and Andrew Datko as their top backups at left tackle for now.  But if this situation came up in the regular season, there’s a decent chance the Packers would move TJ Lang to left tackle and bring Evan Dietrich-Smith off the bench and into the left guard spot.  Dietrich-Smith is currently the backup at center.

Packers should go heavy on defense

April 26, 2012 By Bill Scott

Last year, the Green Bay Packers went heavy on offense in the NFL Draft.  Five

Ted Thompson

of their first six draft picks were on that side of the ball.  The Packers paid for it heavily with the worst pass rush in NFL history.

So while Ted Thompson likes to tell everyone that it’s all about the best player available when selecting players, there will have to be a slight change to that strategy.

The Packers can still go best player available, but it has to be on the defensive side of the ball.  They need pass rushers, ends, linebackers and don’t forget about the safety position after the release of veteran Nick Collins on Thursday.  You can also add corner to that list as Charles Woodson isn’t getting any younger.
