Lang gets 3-year deal with Detroit

March 13, 2017 By Bill Scott

T.J. Lang

After taking free agent visits to Detroit and Seattle, veteran pro bowl guard T.J. Lang had offers to weigh from the Lions, Seahawks and Packers.

Lang settled on a three-year deal with the Lions, worth a reported $28.5 million, including $19 million in guaranteed money.

The 29-year-old Lang spent six seasons with the Packers and Green Bay wanted him back, but at their price.

The Packers resigned outside linebacker Nick Perry to a five-year, $60 million deal.  Then, after talks broke off with Jared Cook, the Packers signed free agents Martellus Bennett and Lance Kendricks.

Lang played his college football at Eastern Michigan and has a home in Michigan, so his signing with Detroit makes sense.  Not to mention, the Lions have a good quarterback (Matthew Stafford) and are a playoff caliber team.

Packers run the table, win NFC North (AUDIO)

January 2, 2017 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers following the Packers 31-24 win over Detroit.

It was six-plus weeks ago that Aaron Rodgers told reporters around his locker that he thought the Green Bay Packers could run the table and win their final six games.

Sunday night, that forecast became reality as the Packers knocked off the Detroit Lions 31-24 at Ford Field, winning six straight games and winning the NFC North Division title.

The Packers made the playoffs for the eighth straight season and will host the New York Giants on Sunday (3:40 p.m.) in a NFC Wildcard playoff game at Lambeau Field.  It was the Packers’ fifth division title in the last six years.  The Lions, who haven’t won a division crown since 1993, made the playoffs as a wildcard team.  They will take a three-game losing streak to Seattle to face the Seahawks on Saturday night. Packers say Rodgers is ready to go

December 27, 2014 By Bill Scott

Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers

The Green Bay Packers don’t appear to be too concerned about quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ calf injury as they go through a final workout today before facing the Detroit Lions on Sunday afternoon at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers is listed as probable for Sunday’s game.  Mike McCarthy said he doesn’t have a “very high concern right now.”

Rodgers completed just 59% of his passes for 162 yards and a touchdown in the week 3 loss to the Lions.  But the Packers quarterback has exploded since then.  Last week, he completed 31 of 40 passes for 318 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

But he’ll need his mobility to be able to stay away from the Lions outstanding front four, led by Ndamukong Suh (8.5 sacks) and Ziggy Ansah (7.5 sacks).

The Lions enter Sunday’s game (3:25pm) with a 23-game losing streak against the Packers in Wisconsin.

Injuries

Both teams are healthy for the most part.  The Lions will play without defensive lineman Nick Fairley (Knee).  The Packers will play without defensive back Davon House (shoulder).

No Raiola

The Lions are also playing without suspended veteran center Dominic Raiola.  They’ll go with rookie Travis Swanson in his place.  How will Raiola’s absence affect the Lions.  That’s anybody’s guess.  Consider the fact that the Packers were facing using a rookie at center to start their season and Corey Linsley stepped in and has played like a veteran.

Packers looking to stay perfect at home (Video Preview)

December 26, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers enter Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions a perfect 7-0 at Lambeau Field this season.  They’re a win away from a perfect home record and it would mark just the sixth time in franchise history that the Packers will have gone through a regular season without losing a football game at home.

The Detroit Lions are desperately trying to change their fortunes against the Packers around.  They’ve lost 23 straight games on Wisconsin soil (Green Bay & Milwaukee) with the last victory coming back in 1991 against the Packers at Lambeau Field.

The Lions have gone through 13 quarterbacks and eight head coaches during that stretch.

Here’s more on the Packers and Lions on Sunday at Lambeau Field.

Bears sign DE Austen Lane

February 18, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Chicago Bears have agreed to a one year contract with defensive end Austen Lane.

The 6’6 Lane, who went to high school at Iola-Scandinavia and played in college at Murray State.  He appeared in two games with the Detroit Lions last season after playing for Jacksonville from 2010 to 2012.

He’ll be reunited with defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, who was in charge of the Jaguars defense when Lane played there.  Lane was a fifth-round pick by the Jaguars and has 64 tackles and three sacks in his career.

Lions carve up the Packers

November 28, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Packers were no match for the Detroit Lions today getting routed 40-10 at Ford Field.  It was the largest loss by the Packers since losing to New England 35-0 in 2006, Mike McCarthy’s first year as Head Coach.

It was a rough day for Matt Flynn who made his first start of the season for the injured Aaron Rodgers.  He was just 10 0f 20 through the air for 139-yards, threw a pick, fumbled twice and was sacked 7-times. The Packers couldn’t get anything going on the ground either.  As a team, they carried the ball 15-times for only 24-yards.  Eddie Lacy had just 16-yards on 10-rushes.  The 126-total yards of offense was the least in a game since the 1978 season.

The Lions racked up 561-yards on offense.  Matthews Stafford threw for 330-yards and 3-touchdowns. Reggie Bush tallied 117-yards on the ground with a score.  The lone Packers touchdown came on a Morgan Burnett fumble recovery, one of 4-turnovers the defense forced.

The loss puts the Packers at 5-6-1, a game and a half behind Detroit who sits at 7-5.  The Packers host Atlanta a week from Sunday.

WRN Sports Daily – Packers (Video)

October 4, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions meet for the 168th time on Sunday at Lambeau Field.  The Packers have dominated the series of late, including the last 22-games in Wisconsin.

All signs point to the Packers rebounding from their loss at Cincinnati nearly two weeks ago.  Coming off of bye weeks under Mike McCarthy, the Packers have a 6-1 record.

They’ve also won eight straight home games and 21 of their last 22.

How will Aaron Rodgers rebound from his poor performance at Cincinnati.  If history is any indication, he’ll do just fine.  After a loss to the Colts last season, Rodgers rebounded to throw six touchdown passes in a win at Houston.  He’s also bounced back with impressive performances against the Vikings and Bears after losses over the last couple of seasons.

The bye week seems to have worked well for the Packers.  They’re as healthy as they’ve been in some time.  A number of players are returning, with the two most important being LB Clay Matthews and TE Jermichael Finley.

The Packers have only three players that won’t play this week.  Running back James Starks and offensive lineman Greg Van Roten are both expected to miss a couple of weeks.  Defensive back Casey Hayward is also expected to miss this week, but he went through practice on Thursday and could return by next week’s game at Baltimore.

In the pressure department, the Lions have only given up three sacks in four games.  The Packers only have seven quarterback sacks in three games.  Green Bay needs to get after Matthews Stafford to slow the Lions red hot offensive attack.  And on the flip side, Detroit’s success starts with their four interior lineman.  The Packers have given up ten sacks and they’ll have to improve in that area this week.

I’ll take the Packers to win 30-23.  I have more on the matchup in the following video.

Big Ten & Detroit Lions announce bowl game agreement

July 17, 2013 By Bill Scott

The Detroit Lions and the Big Ten Conference have entered into a six-year partnership for a bowl game that will be played at Ford Field beginning in 2014.

The game will be officially named once sponsorship agreements are in place.  The inaugural game is tentatively set for December 30, 2014 (pending TV broadcast schedule).

At the end of each college football season, the Big Ten and a conference to be named will determine their team representatives after discussion between bowl and conference officials to create the best possible matchup.

The Big Ten has sent a representative to Detroit for a bowl game three times (Northwestern, 2003; Purdue, 2007 and 2011) for the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, also played at Ford Field.

The Lions become only the second NFL team (Houston Texans, 2006) to officially host and operate a college football bowl game.

Lions make first pick in the NFC North

April 25, 2013 By Bill Scott

With the 5th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, the Detroit Lions selected BYU defensive end Ziggy Ansah.

Ansah has drawn comparisons to New York Giants DE Justin Tuck.  Anash is a physical freak with his combination speed, size and athleticism.  His biggest weakness his fatigue, and that he admits.  He also considered very raw.

Ansah should help a Detroit defense that recorded just 34-sacks in 2012, that was towards the bottom at 20th in the league.

Next up in the NFC North is Chicago at #20.

November 13, 2012 By admin

Greg Jennings (pictured right) looks to return as soon as he can to the field.

Green Bay Packer‘s wide receiver Greg Jennings is back from the East coast and back rehabbing his abdominal injury sustained in week one against the San Francisco 49ers.

On November 1, the wide receiver Tweeted a picture of him post-surgery, letting all of Packer Nation know things went well.

Jennings mentioned that he feels “pain-free” and that it has been the first time he has been “pain-free” since the initial injury in week one.  He also added that it would be at least three weeks before he can start running and cutting at full speed.

Now he has gone through the surgery and discussed with his doctors and Packers training staff, there is no definitive time-table for his return and he is “taking it day by day.”
