Wisconsin hockey earns series split with Michigan

February 15, 2021 By Bill Scott

After a 5-1 loss on Saturday, the 7th ranked Wisconsin men’s hockey team (14-8-0, 12-6-0 0-1-0 Big Ten) rebounded with a 3-2 win over 8th ranked Michigan (11-7-0, 9-7-0 1-0-0) on Sunday in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Dylan Holloway and Roman Ahcan both had a goal and an assist and Dominick Mersch scored what proved to be the game-winner :28 into the third period.

Michigan pulled their goaltender with under three minutes left in the game and Brendan Brisson scored with the extra attacker, cutting Wisconsin’s lead to 3-2.

The Badgers closed out the game from there with the help of a late power-play opportunity and a couple of big saves from freshman goaltender Cameron Rowe.  Rowe finished with 24 saves in picking up the win.

Holloway had his eighth multi-point game in the last nine games as the Badgers snapped a six-game losing streak against the Wolverines.

The Badgers went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 1-for-4 on the power play.  The Badgers closed the weekend, trailing Minnesota by two-points for the Big Ten Conference lead with six games left in the regular season.

UW returns home to host Notre Dame on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. at LaBahn Arena.

January 2, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin men’s hockey team (7-10-1, 2-7-1-1 Big Ten) kicked off the new year with a 3-2 win over the U.S. Under-18 team on New Year’s Day.

The Badgers got goals from Dominick Mersch, Sean Dhooghe and Jack Gorniak.

All three Badger goalies saw action against the US NTDP with Daniel Lebedeff recording a team high 12 saves alongside Jack Berry and Johan Blomquist pairing for two scoreless periods to end the game.

The Badgers are 6-2-0 against the U.S. Under-18 team all-time.

Badgers skate to 2-2 draw at United Center

January 21, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with 12th ranked Notre Dame at the United Center in Chicago on Sunday night.  But it was the Irish who gained the extra point in the Big Ten standings, beating the Badgers in 3-on-3 overtime.

Freshmen linemates Roman Ahcan and Dominick Mersch scored Wisconsin’s (8-10-4, 4-4-4-1 Big Ten) two goals in the first period, with Ahcan’s tally coming with just half a second left on the clock.

The Badgers had plenty of offensive chances in the second and third periods but couldn’t convert.  The Irish (13-8-2, 6-6-1-1 Big Ten) scored the equalizer at the 10:35 mark of the second period to send the game to overtime.

After a scoreless overtime period, the Badgers and the Fighting Irish settled for a tie, but Notre Dame’s Spencer Stastney scored during the 3-on-3 overtime to give the Irish the extra point in the league standings.

Wisconsin finished 0-for-5 on the power play, while Notre Dame was 1-for-2.  Junior goaltender Jack Berry made 27 saves in-goal for the Badgers.

The Badgers dropped the series opener 6-4 on Friday night at the Kohl Center in Madison.  The Badgers will travel to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers at Mariucci Arena.

October 8, 2018 By Bill Scott

Badger coach Tony Granato

Six freshmen tallied points as the Wisconsin men’s hockey team routed the University of Victoria, 8-2, in an exhibition game Sunday night at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers jumped in front early in the first period on power-play goals from sophomore defenseman Wyatt Kalynuk and junior forward Max Zimmer.

Victoria answered with a pair of quick goals midway through the first period, but freshman forward Dominick Mersch buried the puck at the 15-minute mark of the period to start a six-goal outburst.

Three other freshmen scored goals for the Badgers, Roman Ahcan, Brock Caufield and Mick Messner.

Wisconsin outshot Victoria 72-15, with the Badgers holding the Vikings to single-digit shots in each of the three periods.
