The Milwaukee Brewers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and dominated the National League wildcard game until the eighth inning.  Manager Craig Counsell had his pitchers lined up just the way he wanted with Josh Hader coming on for a six-out save.

But a little wildness, a controversial hit batsman, a broken bat single and a outfield fielding error turned around a 3-1 deficit and gave the Washington Nationals a 4-3 win and the right to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a National League Division Series.

After a leadoff walk in the first to Trent Grisham, Yasmani Grandal lined a home run to right to put the Brewers up 2-0.  Eric Thames increased the lead to 3-0 in the second inning with a long solo home run. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers stayed hot, winning their fifth straight game, 4-2 over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark on Tuesday night.  It’s the 16th win in the last 18 games and moved the Brewers to 18-4 in the month of September.

With the Chicago Cubs falling to the Pittsburgh Pirates 9-2, the Brewers magic number to clinch a wildcard playoff spot is now down to one.

Sonny Gray entered the game for Cincinnati with a 2-0 record and 1.85 ERA in four starts against the Brewers this season.  But the Brewers got three early runs off of him and let their bullpen do the rest.

Cincinnati scored first, on back-to-back doubles from Joey Votto and Aristedes Aquino in the bottom of the first inning.  The Reds increased their lead to 2-0 after Ryan Braun’s attempt at a diving catch failed. [Read more…]

September 6, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Chicago Cubs did a number on the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen on Thursday night, pulling out a 10-5 victory in the opener of a four-game series at Miller Park.

Wilson Contreras went 4-for-5 with a homer and an RBI double in the win.  David Bote added a solo shot in the ninth as the Cubs won their third straight and increased their Wild Card lead to five games over the Brewers.

Jose Quintana earned the victory, allowing four runs over five innings, improving to 13-8.

Hernan Perez, Yasmani Grandal and Cory Spangenberg clubbed home runs for the Brewers in the loss.

The Brewers send Zach Davies to the mound in game two of the series tonight against Chicago’s Cole Hamels.

Thames powers Brewers past Astros

September 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Eric Thames

Eric Thames’ three-run homer capped a four-run third inning and the Milwaukee Brewers went on to double up the Astros 4-2 at Miller Park.  Thames homer came off of Houston starter Zach Greinke.  Ryan Braun’s RBI single tied it at one for the Brewers, before Thames long ball.

Jordan Lyles continued his strong performance on the mound, throwing 6 1/3 innings.  Drew Pomeranz followed with  1 2/3 innings of solid relief before Josh Hader finished up in the 9th for his 28th save.

Lyles (10-8), surrendered six hits, struck out two and didn’t issue a walk.  His ERA in seven starts for the Brewers, dropped to 2.56.

With the Brewers leading 4-1 in the sixth, Houston’s Alex Bregman clubbed a solo homer to center to make it 4-2 to close out the scoring.

Keston Hiura had two home runs and three RBI to help the Milwaukee Brewers knock off the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-3 at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Wednesday night.

Hiura’s home runs were numbers 12 and 13 on the season.  He broke out of a small slump that saw him hitting just .143 on the road trip.

Eric Thames drove in a pair of runs with a single in the third as the Brewers jumped out to a 5-0 lead.  Lorenzo Cain extended the Brewers lead to 8-1 in the sixth with a two-run single.

Junior Guerra tossed two scoreless innings in relief of Drew Pomeranz to get the win.  The Brewers have won three straight and remain three games behind the Cubs in the Central Division.  They also moved past the Cardinals and back into second place in the Central.

Trevor Williams entered the game with a career 3-1 record and 1.38 ERA against the Brewers in six career outings.  On Wednesday night, Williams went five innings and allowed six runs to take the loss.

The Pirates have now dropped 21 of the last 25 games.

The Brewers have an off day on Thursday and will open a weekend series against the Texas Rangers on Friday night at Miller Park.
