Brewers acquire SS Adames and bullpen help for two relievers

May 21, 2021 By [email protected]

In a rare mid-May trade of significance the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday acquired shortstop Willy Adames and relief pitcher Trevor Richards from the Tampa Bay Rays.  Milwaukee sent relievers J. P. Feyereisen and Drew Rasmussen to Tampa Bay in return.

Adames is considered a good defender and should be an immediate upgrade over Luis Urias, who has struggled defensively at the position.  Adames is hitting .197 with 5 Homeruns for the Rays.  Richards has pitched to a 4.50 ERA over 12 innings with 16 strikeouts.

Feyereisen was a big part of the Brewers late inning relief this season, helping set up for Devin Williams and Josh Hader.  Manager Craig Counsell and GM David Stearns said Urias will still play, and take on the part of the “super” utility role around the infield.

Neither Adames nor Richards were with the team Friday night in Cincinnati, and it’s not known if either will be available for Saturday’s game.

Road struggles continue for the Brewers in Pittsburgh

August 23, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers continue to search for the consistency necessary to win games.  At the start of their shortened 60-game season, the pitching was good and the hitting was almost missing in action.  The offense, while inconsistent, was starting to come around a little bit and now both the offense and the pitching is failing them.

That formula continued on Saturday in Pittsburgh, where the Brewers fell to the Pirates 12-5.  That’s three straight losses and four out of the last five on the road trip.  They’ll try to salvage a .500 record on the 10-game road trip, if they can avoid a sweep against the Pirates.

The Brewers struggle to hit and score runs was on full display in the third innings.  After Mark Mathias led off with a double, he advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw by pitcher Derek Holland.  With nobody out, Orlando Arcia struck out, Ryan Braun popped out and Christian Yelich grounded out.

The Brewers finally put a run on the board against Holland in the fourth when Jedd Gyorko hit a deep home run to left field to tie the score 1-1. [Read more…]

Brewers make first round of Spring Training roster moves

March 10, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers made their first round of roster reductions, including prospects Corey Ray and Trey Supak who are both on the team’s 40-man roster.

The Brewers reassigned to minor-league camp were right-handers Jesus Castillo, Thomas Jankins, Drew Rasmussen and Miguel Sanchez, left-handers Clayton Andrews and Ethan Small, catchers Mario Feliciano and Payton Henry and third baseman Lucas Erceg.

“This is a group that, in our meetings, kind of knew they were on this path,” manager Craig Counsell said.  “They’re  here to help during spring training.  It’s a performance thing for a lot of these guys…just go have great years and then put (yourselves) on the radar.

“Obviously guys that are on the (40 man) roster are a little bit closer.  But for the rest of those guys, that’s the message, performance gets our attention.  I think we had a more extreme case of that last spring with Trent Grisham, who wasn’t even in our big-league camp at the start of spring and made a pretty big impact on us.”

Brewers win

The Brewers got solo home runs by Lorenzo Cain and Luis Castro to pull out a 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners in Cactus League play.  The Brewers will face the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday.
