Voters head to the polls

September 14, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

Turnout in today’s primary election could set a new record. Reid Magney with the Government Accountability Board says they’re projecting about 28-percent of Wisconsin’s 4.3 million registered voters could cast ballots, about 1.2 million people in all.

Magney says the hotly contested Republican primary in the race for governor will likely bring many people to the polls, along with several open races in the statehouse and U.S. Representative Dave Obey’s (D-WI) open seat in the 7th Congressional District. [Read more…]

Feingold proposes six debates with GOP opponent

September 8, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

U.S. Senator Russ Feingold says he’s willing to participate in several debates with his eventual Republican opponent.

Feingold has accepted invitations to six candidate debates, and wants the eventual Republican nominee to join him. The Wisconsin Democrat says such debates are part of the Wisconsin tradition, and TV ads alone should not be used to decide the election.

Feingold will likely face Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson, who is seen as the Republican front-runner heading into the primary. Johnson, Dave Westlake of Watertown and Stephen Finn of Milwaukee are all seeking the GOP nomination in next Tuesday’s primary.

Johnson has run several negative ads attacking Feingold as a career politician, which the Senator says he would look forward to addressing. Feingold says he’d like him to explain to his face why being a career politician makes him unworthy to continue to serve in the Senate.

The debates could take place in several locations around Wisconsin. Invitations he’s accepted include for debates in Eau Claire, Milwaukee, Wausau, Oshkosh, and Madison.

Johnson’s campaign says the candidate looks forward to debating Senator Feingold, if he wins the nomination. However, a spokeswoman would not comment on a specific number of debates Johnson would be willing to participate in.

September 7, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

After months of campaigning, voters will decide a week from today which candidate will be the Republican nominee in the race for governor.  On the ballot are Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker, former Congressman Mark Neumann, and Scott Paterick of Wisconsin Rapids. [Read more…]

Write-in campaign launched in Senate race

September 2, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

An effort is underway to get a former U.S. Senate candidate’s name back on the ballot. A website launched this week is urging voters to support Terrence Wall in the Republican primary later this month, by pledging to write-in his name on the ballot.

Wall dropped out of the race earlier this summer after Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson received the Republican endorsement. The Madison-area developer says he has nothing to do with the write-in effort. [Read more…]

Experience will be key in GOP primary

August 26, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

A UW-Madison political scientist says all three Republican debates in the race for governor did little to set the candidates apart on their proposals.

Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker and former Congressman Mark Neumann candidates met last night in their final debate before the primary. [Read more…]

Republican candidates meet in first debate

August 6, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

There was little disagreement to be had between the two candidates seeking the Republican nomination for governor, as they met Friday in their first debate before the September primary.

In a debate broadcast on Milwaukee’s WTMJ radio, former Congressman Mark Neumann and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker shared similar takes on several issues, such as how to create jobs, cut spending, and deal with immigration issues. [Read more…]

Neumann wants to undo smoking ban

July 9, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

Wisconsin’s workplace smoking ban is barely a week old…but it wouldn’t last much longer if a Republican candidate for governor has his way. Former Congressman Mark Neumann says the smoking ban is a case of “government overstepping where they should be” and he’ll to repeal the measure if he’s elected governor.

Neumann says he’s not a fan of smoke-filled rooms, so the ban is desirable to him, but that doesn’t make it acceptable. He says business owners and citizens should be able to make their own decisions. For the people who get sick around cigarette smoke, Neumann says they should just find another place to go. An ugly primary for Wisconsin Republicans

June 10, 2010 By WRN Contributor

A UW-Madison expert sees some problems, and possible advantages, in the GOP race for Governor.

The race has grown gotten increasingly nasty between former Congressman Mark Neumann and Milwaukee County Executive Scott Walker. Political science professor Charles Franklin says that upsets what had seemed to be a clear cut path to the nomination for Walker, after he received the endorsement from the Republican Party at its state convention. Senate candidates still face hurdles

May 31, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

Only two candidates remain in the race for the Republican nomination for US Senate. However, UW Political Scientist Charles Franklin says businessmen Ron Johnson and David Westlake will need to overcome their outsider status if they hope to compete.

Franklin says both candidates have little experience running campaigns or winning elections, so they haven’t really had to deal with the pressures that come with this type of contest. He says little mistakes or controversial policies are open to a lot more scrutiny now, so both candidates will need to think carefully about their positions. [Read more…]

Wall drops out of Senate race

May 27, 2010 By Andrew Beckett

The list of Republican candidates for the U.S. Senate is shrinking again.

Madison-area developer Terrence Wall has dropped his bid for the U.S. Senate, less than a week after delegates at the state Republican Party convention endorsed Oshkosh businessman Ron Johnson and Dick Leinenkugel bowed out. [Read more…]
