Burnes and Hader combine for second no-hitter in Brewers franchise history (AUDIO)

September 12, 2021 By Bill Scott

Corbin Burnes

With his pitch count at 115 after eight innings, Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell knew that Corbin Burnes has several more very important innings ahead of him.  It’s why Counsell removed Burnes, despite his not allowing a hit and allowed closer Josh Hader to nail down his 31st save and preserve a combined no-hitter in a 3-0 win over the Cleveland Indians on Saturday night.

It’s the second no-hitter in Brewers franchise history and the first since Juan Nieves no-hit the Baltimore Orioles on April 15, 1987.

It’s been a remarkable year for Burnes, who continues to make a strong bid for the National League Cy Young Award.  He opened the season with 58 strikeouts before he walked his first batter, which set a Major League record.  He finished with 14 strikeouts on Saturday night.  A single walk in the seventh inning is the only thing that prevented Burnes and Hader from combining for a perfect game.

The Brewers pushed their record to a franchise best 33 games over .500.  Their magic number to clinch the National League Central is down to seven. [Read more…]

March 1, 2021 By Bill Scott

Keston Hiura

Keston Hiura got Milwaukee off to a good start with a first inning, three-run homer and the Brewers went on to beat the Chicago White Sox 7-2 in their Cactus League opener on Sunday.

The Brewers also got home runs from Avisail Garcia, Tyrone Taylor and Dylan Cozens in a game that was limited to six innings.

The Brewers played before fans for the first time in more than a year, albeit a limited number.  The announced total was 2,347 for the game.

Eric Lauer gave up a pair of runs in the first inning.  The Brewers then got scoreless innings from Justin Topa, Angel Perdomo, Miguel Sanchez, Ethan Small and Aaron Ashby.  Perdomo and Small retired the side in order.  Ashby closed the game with three straight strikeouts..

The Brewers are back at it again on Monday, facing the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Brewers drop series finale to the Twins

August 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Lauer

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped their series finale against the Minnesota Twins, 12-2 on Wednesday night at Miller Park.

Byron Buxton clubbed two home runs and Miguel Sano also went yard for the Twins.

Eric Lauer gave up seven runs over 3 2/3 innings to take the loss, his second straight poor start.  Manager Craig Counsell told reporters after the game that they’ll discuss whether or not to remove Lauer from the starting rotation.

Luis Urias singled in the only two runs for the Brewers, who dropped to 7-9 on the season.

With the Brewers out of it early, Counsell used the opportunity to give shortstop Orlando Arcia some time in center field.  Arcia came off the bench in the sixth inning to take over in center for the first time in his career, but didn’t see any action there.

In an attempt to save the bullpen, Counsell also inserted infielder Jedd Gyorko into the game to pitch the ninth.  Gyorko allowed a leadoff single, then retired the next three batters, throwing a total of 11 pitches.

It was the third time that Gyorko has pitched in a major league game.  He tossed an inning for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2018 and a third of an inning for the Cardinals last season.

The Brewers hit the road now and will open a four-game series against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field on Thursday night.  The Cubs are off to a 12-3 start this season.

Brewers use long ball to beat the Twins

August 12, 2020 By Bill Scott

Manny Pina

The Milwaukee Brewers have been waiting for their home run bats to come alive.  They broke out on Tuesday night, clubbing four home runs in a 6-4 win over the Minnesota Twins at Miller Park.

In the teams first 14 games, the Brewers had just 13 home runs.  On Tuesday night, the Brewers first hitter, Avisail Garcia sent his first home run of the season into the seats to get the ball rolling.

Catcher Manny Pina went yard twice, the first multi-homer game of his career and Jeff Gyorko delivered the game-winning shot off of Twins closer Taylor Rogers in the eighth inning to snap a 4-4 tie.

Pina extended his hitting streak to five games, the longest streak by a Brewer this season.  The Brewers backup catcher is hitting .429 (6-14) during that stretch.

At the start of the season, the Brewers pitching was expected to be the teams weakness.  That hasn’t been the case.  The Brewers are just 7-8 and the pitching staff deserves a lot of the credit for those seven wins, not to mention holding their team in games with chances to win. [Read more…]

Brewer bats silent in second loss to Cubs (AUDIO)

July 27, 2020 By Bill Scott

Craig Counsell

Tyler Chatwood tossed three-hit ball over six innings to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 9-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers in the series finale at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Sunday.

Willson Contreras, Anthony Rizzo and Ian Happ all homered for the Cubs, who sent Brewers starter Freddy Peralta to the showers in the fourth.  In three-plus innings, Peralta allowed four runs.

Corey Knebel took over for Peralta and allowed three run scoring hits to Nico Hoerner, Victor Caratini and Ian Happ to give the Cubs a 5-0 lead.

The Brewers didn’t get their first  hit until Ben Gamel singled to right with two outs in the fifth.  Orlando Arcia plated the only run for the Brewers with a run scoring single.

Chatwood walked just two and struck out eight.  He and the Cubs pitching staff kept the Brewers top [Read more…]

Brewers pitcher Eric Lauer hoping to be ready for season opener (AUDIO)

July 13, 2020 By Bill Scott

Eric Lauer

Newly acquired left-handed pitcher Eric Lauer is one of three players on the Milwaukee Brewers injured list, joining former San Diego teammate Luis Urias and left-handed pitcher Angel Perdomo, all related to COVID-19.

Urias and Perdomo both tested positive for the coronavirus and are in quarantine.  Lauer was forced to delay his return to the team because he came into close contact with someone who has tested positive for the virus.  According to protocol, Lauer had to quarantine despite not testing positive himself.

Lauer is expected to pitch a bullpen on Tuesday and both he and manager Craig Counsell said he could remain on track to be on the team’s opening day roster. [Read more…]

Brewers sign Peralta to contract extension

February 26, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers have reached agreement on a five-year contract extension with pitcher Freddy Peralta that guarantees him $15.5 million with team options for 2025 and 2026 that could take the deal to $30 million.

The deal was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic and Jon Heyman of MLB Network.

The 23-year-old Peralta came to spring training with a slider added to his pitch repertoire.

Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Peralta and left-hander Eric Lauer are competing for the fifth spot in the starting rotation behind Brandon Woodruff, Adrian  Houser, Brett Anderson and Josh Lindblom.

The five-year deal would reportedly buy out all three of Peralta’s arbitration years.  The club options, if the Brewers choose to exercise them, would buy out the first two years of free agency.

Peralta finished last season with a 7-3 record and a 5.29 ERA.  He made eight starts and 39 appearances in relief.  In 55 career games, Peralta is 13-7 with a 4.79 ERA.  He recorded 211 strikeouts in 163 1/3 innings.

Brewers complete deal with Padres

November 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers attempt to improve their team from last season started on Wednesday, sending right-handed pitcher Zach Davies and outfielder Trent Grisham to the San Diego Padres for left-handed starter Eric Lauer, infielder Luis Urias and a player to be named or cash.

Urias is the key part of the deal.  The 22-year-old will be given every opportunity to win the starting shortstop job.  The Brewers haven’t been happy with the offensive numbers of shortstop Orlando Arcia, who hit .223 in 152 games last season with 15 homers and 59 RBI.

Urias is considered to be one of the top infield prospects in all of baseball.  He hit .315 with 19 homers and 50 RBI at Class AAA El Paso last season.  Urias also played in 71 games for the Padres last season, but hit just .223 with four homers and 24 RBI.

The 24-year-old Lauer was a first-round draft pick in 2016.  In 30 games, including 29 starts for the Padres last season, he went 8-10 with a 4.45 ERA in 149 2/3 innings pitched.

Zach Davies went 10-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 31 starts in 159 2/3 innings pitched last season.

Grisham hit .231 in 51 games with six homers and 24 RBI.
