The Wisconsin Badgers (4-1) started strong both offensively and defensively, then held on to beat the Rhode Island Rams 73-62 at the Kohl Center on Wednesday.

The Badgers built a 17-point lead at halftime (33-16) with strong defensive work and some hot early shooting from guard Brad Davison.  Davison hit his first three 3-point attempts and scored 17 of his 23 points in the first half.  The Badger guard was also perfect at the free throw line, hitting all 12 of his attempts.

D’Mitrik Trice led the Badgers defensively, holding Rams guard Fatts Russell to eight points.  Russell entered the game averaging 17.6 points a game but made just 3 of  his 14 field goal attempts.

Nate Reuvers recorded three blocks to break Ethan Happ’s program record of 154.  Reuvers now had 157, but he also spent time on the bench while dealing with foul trouble.  He had just 5 points on 2 of 8 shooting from the field. [Read more…]

Reuvers named Big Ten Player of the Week

November 11, 2019 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin Badger forward Nate Reuvers had a career week to open the season and was rewarded by being named the Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday.

It marked the first career Big Ten Player of the Week honor for the junior forward, who averaged 18 points, 10 rebounds and 6.5 blocks in two games for the Badgers last week.

Last Friday in UW’s home opener against Eastern Illinois, Reuvers recorded his second career double-double and finished just one block shy of a triple-double.  The Lakeville, Minnesota, native racked up 14 points, a career high 14 rebounds and tied the school record with 9 blocks.

In the season opener against No. 20 Saint Mary’s last Tuesday, Reuvers scored a career high 22 points, while also tallying 6 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Among players who have played in multiple games, Reuvers leads the NCAA averaging 6.5 blocks per game.  He’s the first Badger to be named Big Ten Player of the Week since Ethan Happ last season (Dec. 10, 2018).

The Badgers (1-1) return to action Wednesday night against McNeese State at the Kohl Center.

The University of Wisconsin has been picked to finish sixth in a poll of Big Ten media members released on Monday.

Michigan State was picked to finish first by the Big Ten media, followed by Marland, Ohio State, Purdue and number-five Michigan.  Following Wisconsin at number six is Illinois, Iowa, Penn Sate, Indiana, Minnesota, Rutgers, Nebraska and Northwestern.

Happ to play with Bulls Summer League team

June 24, 2019 By Bill Scott

Former Wisconsin men’s basketball star Ethan Happ will suit up with the Chicago Bulls summer league squad this summer.  The Bulls open play in Las Vegas on July 5th against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Happ started four seasons with the Badgers and set program records for rebounds (1,217) and blocked shots (154).

Happ went undrafted last week after working out for a number of NBA teams.  Happ’s shooting has always been a question and no doubt led to no teams taking a chance on him through the draft.

Hayes to join Clippers summer team

Another former Badger, forward Nigel Hayes, has agreed to play with the Los Angeles Clippers Summer League team. [Read more…]

Happ, Howard named All-American

April 3, 2019 By Bill Scott

Ethan Happ

The state of Wisconsin has two All-American college basketball players in the same season for the first time ever.

Wisconsin senior Ethan Happ and Marquette junior Markus Howard were both named to the All-American second team by the Associated Press on Tuesday.

Happ, who was also a AP third-team All-American in 2017, is the first two-time AP All-American in Wisconsin.

Averaging 17.3 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game, Happ was the nation’s only player to average at least 16.0 ppg, 10.0 rpg and 4.0 apg.  In fact, in the last 20 years, the NCAA’s only other player [Read more…]

Woeful offensive showing ends Badgers season

March 23, 2019 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin’s offensive struggles in the latter portion of the season was a concern going into Friday’s NCAA Tournament opener against Oregon and those concerns turned out to be valid.

The Badgers shot just 20 percent from three-point range (6 of 30) and 33.3 percent overall (20 of 60), falling to the Ducks 72-54, seeing their season come to an end.

The loss was an embarrassment for the Badgers, who were tied with the Ducks, 25-25 at halftime.

Ethan Happ finished with 12 points and eight rebounds but turned it over five times.

Khalil Iverson, who has played well down the stretch, was the most effective Badger player in the loss, finishing with 12 points and five rebounds.

Brad Davison missed all seven of his three-point attempts.  D’Mitrik Trice made just 2 of 10 from distance while Brevin Pritzl went 0 for 3 and Kobe King and Aleem Ford missed both of their attempts.

The Ducks (24-12) ran their win streak to nine games.  Point guard Payton Pritchard finished with 19 points, eight assists and five rebounds.

The Badgers have struggled to score down the stretch and it was just a matter of time before the poor shooting would catch up with them.

The Badgers saw their season come to an end at 23-11.  They lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 when they were eliminated by 12th seeded Ole Miss 57-45, in Kansas City.

Happ named first team All-Big Ten

March 12, 2019 By Bill Scott

Ethan Happ

The Big Ten Conference handed out its season awards on Monday and the only Wisconsin representation is senior forward Ethan Happ.  Happ was named first team All-Big Ten, becoming the first Badger in school history to receive the honor three times.  It’s just the 13th time in league history that a player has received the honor three times.

Happ finished fifth in the Big Ten in scoring this season (17.8 ppg), third in rebounds (10.4), third in assists (4.7) and fifth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.6).

The last Big Ten player to be named All-Big Ten three times is Robbie Hummel of Purdue in 2008, 2010 and 2012.

Michigan State junior point guard Cassius Winston was named the Big Ten Player of the Year, averaging 19.0 points and 7.6 points a game.  Winston shot 82.6 percent from the free-throw line and 41.1 percent from distance.

Purdue’s Matt Painter was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year.  He led the Boilermakers (23-8, 16-4) to a share of the Big Ten regular season title alongside Michigan State.  It’s the fourth time that Painter has won Big Ten Coach of the Year honors.

Iverson leads Badgers past Ohio State in overtime

March 10, 2019 By Bill Scott

Khalil Iverson

The 21st ranked Wisconsin Badgers blew a 23-point second half lead and needed overtime to knock off the Ohio State Buckeyes 73-67 in Columbus, Ohio on Sunday.

Ohio State (18-13, 8-12 Big Ten) outscored the Badgers (22-9, 14-6) 27-5 over the last seven minutes of regulation.

Khalil Iverson had a career-high 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Badgers.  He hit 10 of 14 shots from the field.  Ethan Happ added 16 points 14 rebounds and 8 assists to allow the Badgers to lock up the fourth spot in the Big Ten and secure a double-bye in this week’s Big Ten Tournament.

Senior C.J. Jackson led the Buckeyes with 22 points.  Ohio State, which played its third straight game without top scorer and rebounder Kaleb Wesson, missed their first 13 shots to start the game and trailed 26-16 at halftime.

The Badgers started the second half with an 18-5 run to go up 44-21 before the Buckeyes started their comeback.

The Badgers go into the Big Ten Tournament having won five of their last six games and will open play on Friday.  Ohio State is the No. 8 seed and will open play in the second round of the tournament on Thursday against ninth seeded Indiana.

Badger seniors with a happy farewell

March 8, 2019 By Bill Scott

After playing close game after close game, the Wisconsin Badgers cruised to a convincing 65-45 senior night victory over the Iowa Hawkeyes on Thursday night at the Kohl Center.  The win moved the Badgers to within one victory of securing fourth place in the Big Ten and a double-bye heading into the Big Ten Tournament.

Senior Ethan Happ had 21 points, 14 rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals to help the Badgers sweep the Hawkeyes in the season series.  It marked the 9th time that Happ has scored at least 20 points and collected at least 10 rebounds in a game, the most by a Big Ten player and the second most of any player in the country.

The Badgers (21-9, 13-6 Big Ten) moved one full game in front of fifth-place Maryland (21-9, 12-7).  The Terrapins host Minnesota in their final Big Ten contest on Friday night, while the Badgers close out at Ohio State on Sunday. [Read more…]

Badgers miss chances on the road, fall in OT

February 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Tuesday’s Big Ten game between the Badgers and Hoosiers in Bloomington was like a trip to the dentist.  It was painful to watch and seemed at times like nobody really wanted the win.

But when the dust settled, it was the Hoosiers that ended their five-game losing streak, knocking off the Badgers 75-73 in double overtime.

Freshman Romeo Langford’s driving layup in the final second gave the Hoosiers the victory, just their second since January 3rd.

Langford’s game winner came after D’Mitrik Trice hit three free throws with 9.6 seconds left to tie the game 73-73.

The Badgers (19-9, 11-6 Big Ten) hit just 13 of 25 free throws, including just 5 of 11 in the second overtime.  They missed a chance to tie Maryland (21-7, 12-5) for fourth place in the Big Ten.  Instead, they’re a full game back with three to play.

Maryland faces Penn State on Wednesday night.  The Nittany Lions are in Madison to face the Badgers on Saturday. [Read more…]
