Mike Fiers gave Brewers manager Craig Counsell just what they needed Monday night.  After beating Arizona in 17-innings on Sunday, Fiers not only gave the Brewers a quality start, he held them without a run in six shutout innings.  The Brewers went on to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 in their series opener at Busch Stadium.

After Fiers, Jonathan Broxton, Neal Cotts, Jeremy Jeffress and Francisco Rodriguez finished up, giving the Brewers pitching staff 18-straight scoreless innings.

The Brewers only run came in the first inning when Jean Segura led off with a single, moved to second on a fielder’s choice from Ryan Braun and scored on a two-out single by Carlos Gomez. [Read more…]

No ill-effects for Gomez in Brewers rain-soaked win over Tigers

Carlos Gomez proved right from the very beginning Monday night that he was feeling fine after being hit in the head with a fastball just one day prior.

Gomez hit a lead off home run and drove in the game-winning run in the seventh as the Milwaukee Brewers earned a 3-2 win in rainy Detroit.

The centerfielder came to the plate with the game tied at two, runners on first and second with two outs, and laced a single to center off losing pitcher Kyle Lobstein. Gomez finished 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored.

Milwaukee (14-25) also got a boost from third baseman Aramis Ramirez, whose lead off home run in the fourth pulled the Brewers even before the game slowed down with heavy rains in the sixth inning. [Read more…]

Counsell wins his managerial debut with the Brewers (AUDIO)

The Milwaukee Brewers fell behind the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0 at Miller Park last night, then battled their way back for a 4-3 victory in Craig Counsell’s managerial debut.

Counsell was hired by the Brewers to replace the fired Ron Roenicke.  But even Counsell knew he wouldn’t be able to instill too much change over night.

“Quite honestly, it’s going to be a pretty simple message,” said Counsell.  We have a game at six-twenty. You know we can’t start over today. I’ll have some simple messages for them and we’ll build on this weekend, as we move forward.  Like I said on a daily basis, they’ll understand what I expect of them.” [Read more…]

No matter the type of game, the Milwaukee Brewers cannot seem to figure out a way to finish on the winning side.

A day after losing a 26-run slugfest, the Brewers managed to come out on the wrong side of a 2-1 pitchers’ duel against the Reds at Miller Park.

Closer Francisco Rodriquez (0-2), pitching in a non-save situation, bounced a breaking ball in the dirt and off the chest of catcher Martin Maldonado in the ninth inning, allowing the speedy Billy Hamilton to score from third for the game’s winning run. [Read more…]

Brewers spoil Cardinals home opener

Milwaukee Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said he’s been bothered more by their poor play in the first week of the season than their 1-5 record.

The Brewers were a bit sloppy again on Monday, but the St. Louis Cardinals struggled themselves and the result was Milwaukee stealing one from the Cardinals in their home opener before 47,875 on opening day at Busch Stadium.

The Brewers (2-5) entered the game 7-12 against Cardinals starter Adam Wainwright and 5-10 since 2009.  But they took advantage of a couple of errors by Cardinals second baseman Kolton Wong.  Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez scored what turned out to be the winning run for the Brewers on Wong’s second error.

Matt Garza (1-1) earned the win, working 5 2/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits.  He walked 5 and struck out 4.

Adam Wainwright (1-1) took the loss for the Cardinals, pitching 7 innings and allowing 5 runs (3 earned) with a walk and four strikeouts.

Carlos Gomez is the only player with multiple hits for the Brewers.  He had two of the Brewers eight hits on the day.

Rockies cap off sweep of the Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers offense finally showed some signs of life, scoring twice in the 9th inning to force extra innings with the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night.  But Rockies pinch-hitter Wilin Rosario clubbed a home run in the 10th off of Brewers closer Francisco Rodriguez, giving Colorado a season opening 3-game sweep over the Brewers.

It’s the first season-opening sweep suffered by the Brewers since 2011.  It’s the first time ever that the Brewers were swept in their first series at home.

Rosario fell behind Rodriguez 0-2, then worked the count full before going deep.

Corey Dickerson and Carlos Gonzalez also clubbed homers for the Rockies.  Dickerson’s shot tied the game 2-2 in the seventh off of starter Wily Peralta.  Gonzalez’ blast was a two-run shot in the 8th off of Jonathan Broxton. [Read more…]

The Milwaukee Brewers have signed free-agent relief pitcher Francisco Rodriguez to a two-year contract.  It’s Rodriguez’s fourth stint with the Brewers.

Rodriguez saved 44 games for the Brewers last season, replacing Jim Henderson as the team’s closer the day before the season opener.  He finished 5-5 with a 3.04 ERA.

It’s not known what role Rodriguez will serve with Jonathan Broxton on the roster as well.

The two-year deal includes a team option for a third-year.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the deal will pay Rodriguez $3 million the first year and $6 million in year number two.

The Milwaukee Brewers added some left-handed bullpen relief by signing free agent Neal Cotts to a one year deal, worth a reported $3 million.  The deal was announced by President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Doug Melvin this morning.

Needing to make room on the 40-man roster for Cotts, the Brewers designated infielder/outfielder Elian Herrera for assignment.

Cotts, who turns 35 during spring training, went 2-9 with a 4.32 ERA and two saves in a career-high 73 relief appearances last season with the Texas Rangers.  He owns a career record of 20-24 with a 4.05 ERA and 4 saves in 415 games with the White Sox, Cubs and Rangers.

Over the last two seasons, Cotts held opponents to a .223 batting average with 128 strikeouts in just 123.2 innings pitched.

Cotts enjoyed his best season in the majors two years ago, going 8-3 with a 1.11 ERA and 1 save in 58 relief appearances with Texas.  His 2013 ERA was the [Read more…]

Brewers run win streak to three games

September 13, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Milwaukee Brewers continue their postseason playoff run with a ninth inning 3-2 walk off victory over the Cincinnati Reds at Miller Park on Friday night.

Lyle Overbay’s bases-loaded single off Jumbo Diaz in the ninth inning scored pinch runner Logan Schafer and gave the Brewers their third straight victory.  It’s their longest win streak since they put together five straight victories from Aug. 14-19.

With Lucroy at second base, Aramis Ramirez moved him to third with a groundout to shortstop.  Then Ryan Braun and Gerardo Parra were walked intentionally to bring up Overbay.  On Diaz’s first pitch with the bases loaded, Overbay lined a hit to the gap in left-center to send the 31,463 fans home happy.

As a pinch hitter, Overbay is hitting .370 with a home run and eight rbi’s this season.

Kyle Lohse started and wasn’t involved in the decision for the Brewers.  But he did allow two earned runs on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts, his best start since late August.

The victory goes to Francisco Rodriguez (5-5) who worked the top of the 9th for the Brewers, before Overbay’s heroics.

Game two of the series is tonight at Miller Park.  Yovani Gallardo (8-9, 3.61) pitches for Milwaukee.  David Holmberg (0-1, 8.25) goes for the Reds.
