Badgers winless streak against the Gophers stretches to 18-games

DSCF0430The 4th-seeded Wisconsin Badger women’s hockey team outshot Minnesota 35-23, but it was the Gophers that got the final say with a 3-1 win in the NCAA Frozen Four semifinals at Ridder Arena.

The top seeded Gophers extended their unbeaten string against the Badgers to 18-straight games and knocked Wisconsin out of the Frozen Four semifinal game for the second straight season.

UW freshman Annie Pankowski scored the Badgers’ (29-7-4) lone goal of the game 52 second into the second period and gave Wisconsin a 1-0 lead.  It marked her 21st goal of the season and 43rd point, both team highs.  Pankowski became the first freshman since Sara Bauer during the 2003-04 season to lead UW in goals and points.

Minnesota answered with three straight goals to close out the scoring in the second period and the game.  Maryanne Menefee tipped in a Megan Wolfe shot for the game winner.

Wisconsin ended the season with a NCAA record .958 penalty kill conversion rate, killing 113 of its opponents 118 power plays.  the .958 clip bested the previous record of .957, set by Harvard during the 2003-04 season.

Badger women’s hockey team advances to Frozen Four

The 3rd-ranked Wisconsin women’s hockey team advanced to the NCAA Frozen Four with a 5-1 win over fifth-ranked Boston University at LaBahn Arena on Saturday afternoon.

The Badgers (29-6-4) will play rival Minnesota (32-3-4), in a NCAA Frozen Four semifinal on Friday at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.

The Badgers scored twice in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead.  The Badgers are 23-0-1 when leading after the first period this season.  Bucky is also 24-1-2 when they are the first to score.

The Badgers, who got two goals from Annie Pankowski, outshot the Terriers 48-21.  Pankowski upped her team-leading scoring total to 42 points (20 goals, 22 assists).  Wisconsin is 5-0-0 all-time against Boston University.  The Badgers have outscored the Terriers 23-3 all-time.

Wisconsin improved to 18-4 in NCAA play.  The Badgers advance to their second straight NCAA Frozen Four.  They fell to Minnesota 5-3 in the 2014 semifinals.

The Badgers have now advanced to the Frozen Four in eight of the past 10 years.  That’s the most of any school in the country over that span.

The Ice is Heating Up

Today the puck will drop for the Wisconsin Men’s hockey team (22-10-2, 13-6-1 Big Ten). Earning a first round bye with their 2nd-seed, Wisconsin will face Penn State in the second round. The 6th seeded Nittany Lions won their opening match against 3rd-seeded Michigan 2-1 in double overtime.

Wisconsin is undefeated (4-0-0) against Penn State this season.

The NCAA Division 3 Frozen Four Ice Hockey Championships are on tap this weekend.  Semi-final action this afternoon has top ranked St. Norbert College facing Geneseo State at 3pm. St. Norbert has been to the Frozen Four 8 times and won 3 National titles.

UW-Stevens Point faces Oswego State in the other semi-final.

St. Norbert hockey to host Adrian in NCAA Quarterfinal

NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament for the 12th time in 13 years, and will receive a first-round bye in the 11-team tournament as a result.

The top-ranked Green Knights (25-3-1) will host a national quarterfinal game at 7pm Saturday at the Cornerstone Community Center.  The Green Knights will face Adrian College (22-2-4).  The winner will advance to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four on March 21-22 at Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston, Maine.

This tournament appearance is St. Norbert’s 15th with the Green Knights also making appearances in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2013.  The Green Knights are 22-11-1 all-time in the NCAA tournament and won the 2008, 2011 and 2012 national championships.

UW-Stevens Point travels to St. Thomas in the other quarterfinal.

St. Norbert College to host NCAA Hockey Quarterfinal

St. Norbert College earned the top seeding in the West Region of the NCAA Division III Men’s Ice Hockey Tournament for the 9th time in 10-years and will host a quarterfinal-round game Saturday at the Cornerstone Community Center.

St. Norbert will face the winner of a first-round game between Hamline University (16-6-5) and UW-Superior (16-12-1) at 7pm Saturday.  The game between the Pipers and Yellowjackets will be played at 7pm Wednesday at Wessman Arena in Superior.  The winner of Saturday’s quarterfinal will advance to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four on March 25-26 at Ridder Arena in Minneapolis.

The Green Knights (22-4-1) won the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) regular-season and Peters Cup championships.  The Green Knights are an unblemished 13-0 at the Cornerstone this season.

This is St. Norbert’s 12th NCAA tournament appearance.  They won the 2008 National Championship.

Badgers advance to Frozen Four final

John MitchellThe Wisconsin Badger men’s hockey team is one win away from their 7th NCAA Frozen Four Championship after yesterday’s convincing 8-1 win over Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) at Ford Field in Detroit.

The Badgers will meet Boston College in Saturday night’s (6pm /ESPN) championship game.  Boston College rolled to a 7-1 win over Miami of Ohio in the other semi-final.

Junior defenseman Brendan Smith tallied five assists and sophomore Derek Stepan had 2 goals and 2 assists to lead the Badgers (28-10-4) in the win. [Read more…]

Hockey Badgers face RIT in Frozen Four semifinals today

The Wisconsin Badgers have a rich history when it comes to the NCAA Frozen Four.  They’re playing later today in their 11th Frozen Four and the Badgers will be chasing their 7th Frozen Four Championship.

Wisconsin last won it in 2006, a year when the teams upperclassmen dominated play.  This years 6-seniors are trying to create their own legacy as well, hoping to win the schools 7th National title. [Read more…]

More honors for Wisconsin’s Blake Geoffrion

Blake GeoffrionWith the Badgers getting ready for the NCAA Frozen Four semifinals tomorrow against R.I.T., Inside College Hockey has selected Badger forward Blake Geoffrion as its College Hockey Player of the Year.

As a member of the Hobey Baker Hat Trick, Geoffrion leads the WCHA in goals with 27 and is second nationally in the same category.   His 14 power-play goals top any other player in the country, and his 48  total points lands him at third on one of the nation’s top-scoring teams.

Inside College Hockey has already named Geoffrion’s teammate Brendan Smith the Defenseman of theYear.  The two represent the Cardinal and White on Inside College Hockey’s All-American First Team.

Geoffrion looks to lead the Badgers to the team’s seventh national title this week in Detroit.  Wisconsin (27-10-4) battles the RIT Tigers (28-11-1) in the national semifinal game, set for 4pm on Thursday.

Eaves up for coach of the year

Mike EavesWisconsin Badger men’s hockey coach Mike Eaves is one of 10 finalists for college hockey’s Coach of the Year.

The winner of the 2010 Spencer Penrose award will be announced at the Frozen Four next week.

Wisconsin is set to face Rochester Institute of Technology (R.I.T.) in the Frozen Four semifinals on Thursday afternoon at Ford Field in Detroit.  It’s the Badgers 11th trip to the Frozen Four.  They’ve won 6-times, including 2 in Detroit.

R.I.T. is just in its 5th season as a Division 1 program will be making its first ever trip to the Frozen Four.

Geoffrion could be the first Badger to win Hobey Baker

Blake GeoffrionThe next time a Wisconsin Badger hockey player wins the Hobey Baker Award, it’ll be the first. 

Wisconsin senior forward Blake Geoffrion was among the three finalists for the 2010 Hobey Baker Award, honoring college hockey’s top player.  Geoffrion said it’s hard to believe hat no Badger has ever won the award.

UW defenseman Brendan Smith was one of 10 finalists for the award, but he didn’t stay on the list that was reduced to 3. 

The other finalists are: Bobby Butler, a senior forward from New Hampshire and Gustav Nyquist, a sophomore forward from Maine.

The 2010 Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced on April 9th at the Frozen Four at Ford Field in Detroit.
