Former Badger coach, Andersen is out at Oregon State

October 10, 2017 By Bill Scott

Former Wisconsin football coach Gary Anderson is out as head football coach at Oregon State University.  The two parties mutually agreed to the split, effective immediately, with the Beavers off to a 1-5 start.

Oregon State announced the split on Monday, two days after a 38-10 loss at Southern California.

Cornerbacks coach Cory Hall was named interim coach.

Oregon State said Anderson and the school “agreed to release each other from all future contract obligations and payments.”  Andersen’s contract had been extended after last season and ran through the 2021 season.  he was due to make $2.65 million this season and had he been fired without cause, he would have been due about $12 million.

Anderson arrived at Oregon State in December of 2014 after serving as head coach at Wisconsin for two seasons.  He went 19-7 with the Badgers.

Kafentzis chooses Nevada

June 12, 2015 By Bill Scott

MotionW_2ColorQuarterback Austin Kafentzis spent one semester at the University of Wisconsin.  The Badger recruit is now transferring to Nevada.

Kafentzis originally committed to former Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen in 2013.  He fell to fifth on the quarterback depth chart under new coach Paul Chryst in spring practice.

Kafentzis came to Wisconsin from Sandy, Utah, where he broke several state records.

Kafentzis eligibility for next season with the Wolf Pack is still up in the air.  Wyoming says it plans to file for a waiver with the NCAA so Kafentzis can play right away.

The Wisconsin Badgers put their 59-0 Big Ten title game loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes behind them.  They knocked off the Auburn Tigers 34-31 in overtime in the Outback Bowl.

The Badgers captured their first bowl game victory since 2009 and Barry Alvarez returned to the sidelines to earn his 9th (9-4) bowl victory.

Melvin Gordon ran for an Outback Bowl-record 251 yards and three touchdowns and freshman kicker Rafael Gaglianone kicked a 25-yard field goal in overtime to give the 18th-ranked Badgers the victory.

Gordon ran for touchdowns of 25, 53 and 6 yards and finished with 2,587 rushing yards on the season, 41 shy of Barry Sanders’ single-season FBS rushing record.  Gordon was named the Outback Bowl MVP.

Joel Stave gave the Badgers the early 7-0 lead, tossing a 7-yard touchdown pass to Corey Clement. [Read more…]

Report: Chryst poised to return to Wisconsin as head coach

December 12, 2014 By Bill Scott

Paul Chryst

Paul Chryst

According to a report by Milwaukee Journal Sentinel beat writer Jeff Potrykus, Wisconsin Athletic Director Barry Alvarez  has put in motion, Paul Chryst’s return to Madison to replace Gary Andersen as Wisconsin’s new head football coach.

The story cited a source close to the UW program as saying Chryst is poised to return to his alma mater.

The 49-year-old Chryst is a native of Madison and played at Wisconsin from 1986-’88.  He went on to coach tightends in 2002, then later served under Bret Bielema as Wisconsin’s offensive coordinator.  He is in his third season at Pittsburgh where he has an overall record of 19-19.

Barry Alvarez had said he wanted to have a replacement on board by January 1st.

There is a job posting period that will have to run its course before the school can make any hire official, but it would appear that Barry Alvarez’ search started and ended with Paul Chryst.

Andersen leaves Wisconsin after just two years on the job (Video)

Barry Alvarez press conference

For just the second time in the last three years, Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez will spend the holiday season looking for a new head football coach.  He must also consider whether he’ll accept the seniors invitation to coach the Badgers in the New Years Day Outback Bowl after Gary Andersen said he’s leaving Wisconsin after just two seasons on the job.

Andersen has accepted the head coaching position at Oregon State, replacing Mike Riley who left the school to take over at Nebraska.  Oregon State plans to introduce Andersen at a news conference on Friday.  Anderson told Alvarez he was leaving Madison for family reasons.

Alvarez certainly didn’t see this coming.  But what’s somewhat concerning is that Wisconsin has all of a sudden become a stepping stone job.  Alvarez will be looking to change that with his next coaching hire.

The Wisconsin athletic director said he wants to find a new coach with head coaching experience.  He said it has to be a good fit for Wisconsin and Badger nation is hopeful the next coach will be somebody that wants to stick around for a while. [Read more…]

Dan Voltz

Dan Voltz

Redshirt sophomore center Dan Voltz is hoping his ankle will be well enough to play Saturday night when the 11th ranked Wisconsin Badgers meet 6th ranked Ohio State in Saturday night’s Big Ten Championship game at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Voltz suffered an ankle injury in the regular season finale against Minnesota and didn’t practice until yesterday (Thursday) with a heavy tape job.

Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen is expecting Voltz to play, but if he can’t, the Badgers aren’t ruling out freshman Michael Deiter.  Deiter hasn’t played at all this season and was planning to redshirt.  But Deiter and his family are reportedly on board and willing to take one for the team if need be.

Whoever plays center for the Badgers on Saturday, they’ll be facing a pair of talented tackles in Michael Bennett and Adolphus Washington.  Bennett has four sacks and 8 1/2 tackles for loss.  Washington has 3 1/2 sacks and eight tackles for loss. [Read more…]

After falling behind 17-3, the Wisconsin Badgers rebounded for a 34-24 win over the rival Minnesota Gophers to clinch a spot in the Big Ten title game and retain Paul Bunyan’s Axe for the 11th straight season.

The 14th ranked Badgers (10-2, 7-1 Big Ten) captured the Big Ten’s West Division title and will face No. 6 Ohio State (11-1, 8-0) on Saturday in Indianapolis.  The Badgers last won Big Ten titles in 2011 and 2012.

The Buckeyes closed out the regular season with a 42-28 win over rival Michigan earlier in the day in Columbus, but in the process, the Buckeyes lost their starting quarterback J.T. Barrett for the rest of the season with a broken ankle.

Melvin Gordon rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries.  He also added a 4-yard touchdown catch.  Dayne captured the Wisconsin and Big Ten rushing record for yards in a season with 2,260, surpassing Ron Dayne’s record of 2,109. [Read more…]

Gary Andersen

Gary Andersen

Wisconsin head football coach Gary Andersen has been named one of 20 semifinalists for the Maxwell Football Club collegiate Coach of the Year Award.  It’s the second season the Badgers’ second-year head coach has earned the honor.

Andersen has led Wisconsin to a 17-6 record in his two seasons in Madison, including an 11-3 mark in Big Ten games.  That is the best start for a UW coach through 14 games in conference play in the modern era (since 1946).

Andersen joins Nick Saban (Alabama), Art Briles (Baylor), David Cutcliffe (Duke), Jimbo Fischer (Florida State) and Urban Meyer (Ohio State) as the only coaches to appear on the semifinalist list in each of the past two seasons.

Badgers celebrate victory going into bye week

Despite allowing a pair of late touchdowns, the Wisconsin Badgers notched a 38-28 win over Illinois in the Badgers Big Ten home opener at Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday.

Wisconsin (4-2, 1-1 Big Ten) moves into its second and final bye week of the season and will return to Camp Randall on Oct. 25 to host Maryland.  The Terrapins (4-2, 1-1) will host Iowa (5-1, 2-0) on Saturday.

Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen said he wants to continue to use two quarterbacks moving forward.  Joel Stave started Saturday and completed 7 of 14 passes for 73 yards.  McEvoy was given only one series, completing 3 of 4 for 24 yards and rushed once for 12 yards.

It’ll be interesting moving forward to see if McEvoy gets more time at wide receiver, if his quarterback reps continue to be limited. [Read more…]

Badgers to use both Stave and McEvoy against Illinois

October 7, 2014 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers haven’t named a starting quarterback for Saturday’s Big Ten home opener against Illinois.  In fact, the Wisconsin depth chart lists both Tanner McEvoy and Joel Stave as co-starters.

What head coach Gary Andersen does know is that both Stave and McEvoy will play.  Andersen said they could also play at the same time with Stave throwing passes to McEvoy.

The 6’6 McEvoy played wide receiver in high school at Bergen Catholic High School in New Jersey before switching to quarterback as a senior.

McEvoy, after not earning time at quarterback last season, he moved to wide receiver and was making plays until he suffered a broken bone in his hand that forced him to wear a [Read more…]
