Dominican makes history, Germantown denied at 100th WIAA Basketball Championships

Two teams entered the 100th WIAA Boys State Basketball Championships with an opportunity to add their name to the list of teams to win four-straight state titles, and only Whitefish Bay Dominican accomplished the task at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Six-foot-10 Diamond Stone a game-high 23 points as three-time defending champion Dominican beat previously undefeated Mineral Point 75-49, joining the Randolph teams of 2002-2005 as the only schools in state history to pull off the four-peat. Both did so in Division 4.

Earlier in the Day, Stone and Rice Lake’s Henry Ellenson were named co-Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Mr. Basketball. Ellenson, who is headed to Marquette, did not play in the Division 2 title game against Mt. Horeb due to a broken left hand suffered in Friday’s semifinals. [Read more…]

Germantown’s legendary coach passes away

Phi Datka, who led Germantown to state football titles in 1998 and 2003, passed away Tuesday morning at the age of 69.

Datka spent 42 seasons as the head coach at Germantown, retiring after the 2010 season.  He coached 43 seasons in all, stacking up 280 career victories, which ranks 8th on the alltime state victory list in Wisconsin.  Datka was elected to the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1998.

Datka won eight conference championships and made four trips to the state championship game, finishing as a runner-up in 1979 and 1997.

Datka was also athletic director at Germantown until he retired from that position in 2003.  He went on to serve as head coach at the school for seven more years.

Germantown sets state record for wins

The Germantown boys basketball team earned their state-record-setting 63rd consecutive victory on Tuesday night, 90-63 over Milwaukee Lutheran.

The streak started Nov. 29, 2011, with a 73-58 win over Brookfield Central.  Along the way, the Warhawks captured back-to-back Division 1 state championships each of the past two seasons.

Germantown held a 36-31 edge at halftime but used a 32-10 third quarter run to pull away.
