Harrell getting support from within

August 21, 2012 By Bill Scott

If the Green Bay Packers lost quarterback Aaron Rodgers to an injury, could

Graham Harrell

backup Graham Harrell come in and win a game?  That’s one of the burning questions that keeps popping up in Green Bay as the Packers get ready to play preseason game #3 on Thursday night at Cincinnati.

In two games, Harrell has completed just over 50% of his passes (52.9%), converting 27 of 51 attempts.  He’s thrown for 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions.

Packers offensive coordinator Tom Clements was asked if he thought Harrell could get the job done, he said the Packers aren’t down on Harrell like some others. [Read more…]

Packers remain winless in preseason play

August 17, 2012 By Bill Scott

The Green Bay Packers aren’t overly concerned about their preseason record,

Graham Harrell

but they did fall to 0-2 with a 35-10 loss to the Cleveland Browns at Lambeau Field.

After the Packers forced a fumble on Cleveland’s first possession, giving the Packers the football deep in Browns territory.

Aaron Rodgers missed a wide open Jordy Nelson in the right corner of the end zone.  But Rodgers rebounded to hit Nelson two plays later from 20-yards out to put the Packers on top 7-0. [Read more…]

Packers vs. Browns tonight

August 16, 2012 By Bill Scott

Here’s what I’ll be watching when the Green Bay Packers and Browns meet

D.J. Smith

tonight in NFL preseason action at Lambeau Field.

1)  The Packers so far are staying the course with backup QB Graham Harrell,
despite an average performance last week against San Diego.  Harrell’s 2-minute work at the end of the first half was good.  But the rest of his game was inconsistent.  He missed a number of downfield shots in the game and needs to improve there.  Management has stayed away from looking for a
veteran to back up Aaron Rodgers, but it’s important that Harrell have a
strong showing to re-enforce that support.

2)  The Packers suffered a major loss with the injury to MLB Desmond Bishop.
The reigns on the inside get turned over to D.J. Smith, who filled in as a
starter for 3-games last season while Bishop was recovering from a calf
injury.  The Packers like Smith, but we’ll see how much of a drop-off there
is after the loss of Bishop.

3) Marshall Newhouse returns to the lineup tonight at left tackle, but I’ll have
my eyes on the backups.  The Packers are not very deep on the offensive
line and are hoping to see some improvement from week 1 at San Diego.

4)  The Packers will be dressing 3 healthy running backs tonight, including
Alex Green, who will get his longest look of the preseason tonight.  He’s
coming off of a major knee injury and has been brought along slowly to this
point in camp.  He’ll still be limited tonight, but it’ll still be the next step for
Green.  For the second week in a row, Marc Tyler will get most of the
carries tonight as he looks to pick up where he left off last week, minus a
      late fumble.

5)  Davon House appeared to be headed for a starting job at right corner until
he went down for 2 to 3 weeks with a shoulder injury.  Rookie Casey
Hayward gets the nod tonight, a golden opportunity to show what he
      can do.

6)  The top two picks, Nick Perry and Jerel Worthy will be counted on to
make pays this season.  Perry was OK in the preseason opener, but Worthy
didn’t stand out at all.  Tonight is his chance to pick up the pace against
      the Browns.

7)  It’s the first game inside Lambeau Field for kicker Mason Crosby with
the renovation to Lambeau.  There’ll be some different twists with the
wind inside the stadium and we’ll see just how well Crosby adjusts.

The Packers kickoff at 7pm tonight at Lambeau Field.

McCarthy thinks Harrell is ready

August 15, 2012 By admin

Graham Harrell (middle #6)

Green Bay Packers Coach Mike McCarthy stands firmly behind 27-year old quarterback Graham Harrell. McCarthy admitted he does not have a lot of playing time under his belt but, he does feel Harrell is ready.

AUDIO: McCarthy admits to Harrell inexperience, but thinks he is ready :11

Graham says he feels more comfortable with the offense this pre-season than last, and with every rep, his level of comfort rises. He also said last week felt like his first game with the second unit and offensive consistency will be better against the Browns.

AUDIO: Harrell on comfort level with Packer’s second team :07

Harrell, posting multiple NCAA passing records while playing for Texas Tech, went 15 for 27 in passing, threw for 135 yards and 1 touchdown last week against the San Diego Chargers. He hopes the second team’s performance from last week will carry over to this week against the Browns.

McCarthy is not the only one who believes Harrell has made strides, Aaron Rodgers believes Graham has a better understanding of the playbook and offense this pre-season compared to last year.

AUDIO: Aaron Rodgers says Harrell is becoming an expert in the offense :19

Harrell agreed with Rodgers’ statement and said, “…every rep you get in the offense makes you that much more comfortable.”

Harrell’s next chance comes Thursday night, when the Packers host the Cleveland Browns in preseason game number two at Lambeau Field.

A miserable start for the Packers

August 10, 2012 By Bill Scott

Watching the Green Bay Packers play their preseason opener last night, if you

Desmond Bishop

didn’t know they went 15-1 last season, you’d never believe it.

The Packers came away from their 21-13 loss to the San Diego Chargers with little to brag about.  They struggled on offense, defense and special teams.

AUDIO: Mike McCarthy on his teams first game :15

Aaron Rodgers played the first three series and collected 2 first downs.  He went 2 for 8 with an interception and a fumble.  His passer rating finished at 0.0. [Read more…]

Packers veterans get some time off

August 6, 2012 By Bill Scott

Sunday night’s training camp workout was a showcase opportunity for some of

Graham Harrell

the younger players on the Green Bay Packers roster.

A handful of veterans were given the night off which allowed players like Graham Harrell and wide receiver Diondre Borel to get some more legitimate reps.

AUDIO: Mike McCarthy said it was great work for the younger players :19

Aaron Rodgers, Donald Driver, Ryan Pickett, Jarrett Bush, Jeff Saturday, Charles Woodson, Anthony Hargrove, A.J. Hawk and Greg Jennings were all off.  Jennings would have missed anyway because of a concussion.  John Kuhn could have taken the day off, but given the fact that he just returned to practice, he decided to work anyway.
