Hockey Badgers fall at Denver

November 27, 2016 By Bill Scott

bucky-badger-logoThe Wisconsin Badgers comeback fell short in the third period, falling to the second-ranked Denver Pioneers 6-5 on Saturday night.

Wisconsin (7-5) started the third period with a goal from Max Zimmer to cut the Pioneers’ lead to 5-3 with just under 16 and a half minutes to play.

Denver went back up by three goals when Troy Terry scored on a 5-on-3 power play.

But the Badgers got goals from Grant Besse (PP) and Seamus Malone on a major power play at 8:36 to close the gap to one.

The Badgers had allowed just 12 shots on goal in a 2-1 victory at Colorado College, but they surrendered 45 shots against Denver.

Wisconsin freshman goaltender Jack Berry made 39 saves in Wisconsin’s loss.

The Badgers return home to face Omaha this next weekend at the Kohl Center.

A third period rally came up short for the Wisconsin men’s hockey team (2-2-0, 0-0-0-0 Big Ten) as they dropped the second game of the weekend series 8-5 against Boston College (2-2, 0-0-0-0 Hockey East).

The Badgers fell behind 6-2 in the second period, but rallied to pull within one at 6-5.  But forced to pull their goaltender, the Badgers saw the Eagles score a pair of empty net goals to pull out the win.

The Badgers got third period goals from Cameron Hughes, Grant Besse and Ryan Wagner to pull within a goal.

Wisconsin killed off all six Boston College power plays and didn’t allow a power play goal in the series.  They are now 21-for-23 on the penalty kill, good for a 91 percent efficiency. [Read more…]

The Badgers (2-16-4, 0-6-2-2 Big Ten) grabbed an extra point in the Big Ten standings with the shootout victory, outscoring Minnesota 3-2 in seven rounds.  But they remain without a victory in Big Ten play.

Freshman Cameron Hughes also scored his first career goal, giving the Badgers a 4-3 lead with a power-play goal at 18:47 of the third period.

Sophomore Grant Besse scored his fifth goal in four games against Minnesota this season.

Badger goaltender Joel Rumpel made 42 saves, while succeeding on five of seven shots in the shootout.

5-2 on Saturday night at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis.

After pumping 20 shots on Badger goaltender Joel Rumpel on Friday night, the Gophers got 21 shots on net in the opening period last night, tallying three first period goals.

The Badgers finally found the back of the net at the 15:27 mark of period two when Grant Besse stepped out of the right corner with the puck and initially shoved it into goaltender Adam Wilcox’s pads, but eventually got it to cross the goal line for his fifth score of the season.

The Plymouth, Minnesota native tallied again in the third period on a Wisconsin 5-on-3 power play.
