The Wisconsin Badger men’s basketball team will enter the 2020-21 college basketball season as a top 10 team.

Greg Gard’s Badgers came in at number-seven in the A.P. Top 25 on Monday.  Thursday, the Badgers came in at number-seven again in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll.

The Badgers captured a share of the 2019-20 Big Ten regular season title.

A total of six Big Ten teams were in the USA Today Top 25 poll.  Iowa leads the way at number-six, followed by the Badgers at seven.  Illinois is tenth, Michigan State 12th, Rutgers is at 23 and Ohio State is 24th.

The last time UW opened the season as a consensus top-10 team was in the 2014-15 season.  They were No. 3 in the AP poll and No. 4 in the Coaches Poll.  They went on to win the Big Ten regular season title with a 16-2 record, won the Big Ten Tournament and made it to the NCAA Championship game before falling to Duke.  Wisconsin finished the season that year at 36-4.

Wisconsin’s Gard named Big Ten Coach of the Year

March 9, 2020 By Bill Scott

Wisconsin Badger coach Greg Gard was named the 2020 Big Ten Coach of the Year, while juniors Nate Reuvers and D’Mitrik Trice were each named third-team all-big ten honorees.

Gard led the Badgers to a share of the Big Ten title and eight-straight wins to finish regular season play.  He is just the second head coach in UW history to win Big Ten Coach of the Year with Bo Ryan being the other, winning top coaching honors in 2002, ’03, ’13 and ’15.

Badgers clinch share of Big Ten title, capture top seed in Conference Tournament

March 7, 2020 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers capped off a 9-point second half comeback to beat Indiana 60-56, securing a share of the Big Ten regular season title on Saturday in Bloomington.

After an 18-point loss to the Minnesota Gophers on Feb. 5, the Badgers (21-10, 14-6 Big Ten) have reeled off a Big Ten leading eight straight victories to grab a share of the conference title with Maryland and Michigan State.  The Badgers will enter the Big Ten Tournament this week as the number-1 seed.

The Badgers outscored the Hoosiers 16-5 over the final 6 minutes and 34 seconds.

Nate Reuvers led all scorers with 17 points.  Teammate Micah Potter added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

After a locker room celebration, Greg Gard brought his assistant coaches, Dean Oliver, Joe Krabbenhoft and Alando Tucker to the podium with him.

The Badgers have overcome adversity before and during the season, on their way to the Big Ten title.  Gard said their season went from tragic to magic and they’re not done yet.

The Badgers get a double-bye into the tournament’s quarterfinals.  They’ll open on Friday morning at 11 a.m. in Indianapolis, against the winner of Thursday’s second round game between #8-seed Rutgers and #9-seed Michigan.

Badgers climb into tie for the Big Ten lead

March 5, 2020 By Bill Scott

The 24th ranked Wisconsin Badgers have come a long way, moving into a tie for the Big Ten lead with Maryland and Michigan State with one game left to play in the regular season.  The Badgers (20-10, 13-6 Big Ten) knocked off Northwestern 63-48.

Nate Reuvers scored 11 points to lead the Badgers, who shot just 39% from the field, but four other players scored 9-points each (Brevin Pritzl, Aleem Ford, Brad Davison and Micah Potter) in the win.

The Badgers finished 8 of 25 (32%) from three-point range, but won their seventh straight game and 20th of the season.  Wisconsin has now won 20 or more games in four of Greg Gard’s five seasons as head coach.  Gard also collected his 100th career victory (100-57) in Madison.

The Badgers have gone from a 5-5 start in December to a three-way tie for the Big Ten lead.  They’ll close out the regular season at Indiana on Saturday and can wrap up at least a share of the Big Ten title with a win.

Badgers fall to rival Gophers

February 6, 2020 By Bill Scott

Greg Gard

The Wisconsin Badgers were riding high after last week’s upset victory over Michigan State, but the momentum from that win didn’t carry over to last night.  Wisconsin traveled to Minneapolis and fell to the Minnesota Gophers 70-52 at Williams Arena.

The Badgers the Gophers both came out of the gates shooting well, but only the Gophers continued that trend while the Badgers cooled off considerably.

Wisconsin (13-10, 6-6 Big Ten) shot just 28% from the field (19-67), and 24% from three-point range (7-29), including a 1 for 16 effort in the second half.  The loss drops the Badgers into a tie with Minnesota (12-10, 6-6) and Purdue (13-10, 6-6).  The Boilermakers crushed visiting Iowa Wednesday night 104-68.

The Gophers had four players score in double figures, led by Payton Willis, who had 21 points.  Forward Daniel Oturu also added 17 points and 14 rebounds for his 12th double-double of the season.

Nate Reuvers led the Badgers in scoring with 14 points,  Micah Potter added 11 points and 15 rebounds.

“I didn’t think we were physical enough in the paint,” Coach Greg Gard said.  “We got the ball in there and didn’t finish, didn’t get to the free-throw line as much as we needed to.

“We faded away too much, settled for jump shots at times.  It showed itself in some of the shooting percentages.”

The Badgers return home and will host Ohio State on Sunday.
