Shooting goes cold, Badgers fall to Richmond

November 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers four-game winning streak is over, falling to the Richmond Spiders 62-52 in the Legends Classic semifinals at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

The Badgers were too dependent on three-pointers and hit just 7 of 27 (25.9%) from distance.  They hit just 34% from the field overall, falling to 4-2 on the season.  UW will face New Mexico in the consolation game at 4 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

The Spiders improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1985 and will take on Auburn in tonight’s championship game.

The Badgers were led by Nate Reuvers with 17 points and Kobe King added 10.

Wisconsin committed 15 turnovers.  They entered with a season average of 11.8.  Richmond turned those turnovers into 17 points.

Coach Greg Gard said his team wasn’t physical enough and failed to get the ball in the paint, where they were outscored by Richmond 28-10.

Badgers beat Green Bay after learning of Potters fate (AUDIO)

November 22, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin men’s basketball team found out just hours before game time that forward Micah Potter’s final appeal to be re-instated immediately had been denied.

It means Potter will miss a total of 10 games this season and won’t be eligible to play until December 21 against UW-Milwaukee.

The Badgers went out and built an early double-digit lead, led by 22 at the half and cruised to an 88-70 win over the Green Bay Phoenix at the Kohl Center.

It was the fourth straight win for the Badgers (4-1), who have won 24 of 25 games against Green Bay (1-3) in the series.

Six Badgers finished in double figures, led by Nate Reuvers with 19.  Brad Davison added 15, Kobe King and Aleem Ford has 12 each.  D’Mitrik Trice scored 11 points and Brevin Pritzl scored 10, including a buzzer beating three point attempt just before halftime.

The Badgers hit 10 of 19 three-pointers in the first half and finished 15 of 31 from beyond the arc.

Freshman Amari Davis led four Green Bay players in double-figures with 16 points.

Badgers lock up Howard and pull away to beat rival Marquette

Marquette’s All-American senior guard Markus Howard poured in 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting in the first half, but the Wisconsin Badgers made life much tougher on Howard in the second half and pulled out a 77-61 win over the Golden Eagles at the Kohl Center.

Howard missed all nine of his shots in the second half, making only a pair of free throws.

“Honestly, it was a team effort,” Badger guard D’Mitrik Trice said.  “We know he’s a great, great scorer.  He’s one of the best in college basketball, so we knew it was going to take all of us to lock him up on defense.  We knew it would lead to offense.”

Trice finished with 10 points, one of six Badgers scoring in double figures.  Brevin Pritzl led the way with 15 points and 13 rebounds.  Brad Davison also had 15 points in the win.  Aleem Ford added 12 points. [Read more…]

Badgers wake up in second half to pull away to victory

November 14, 2019 By Bill Scott

The Wisconsin Badgers had to dig a little deeper on their bench on Wednesday night but eventually pulled away to beat McNeese State 83-63 at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers were short-handed to start, playing with old Kobe King who injured his ankle in practice on Monday.  Then they had to deal with Nate Reuvers foul trouble for much of the game.

With the Badgers off to a slow start, coach Greg Gard went to his bench and called on the likes of Tyler Wahl and Walt McGrory.  McGrory is a walk-on and one of his biggest roles is testing the starters in practice as a member of the scout team.

McGrory had combined for just 11 points in 22 games in his first two seasons, hadn’t played in the Badgers first two games.  But he set a personal best with 24 minutes and a career high 9 points last night.

It was McGrory and Brad Davison who supplied most of the first half firepower.  Davison finished with a season high 24-points, making 3 of 4 three-pointers, 7 of 8 shots overall and a perfect 7 of 7 at the free throw line. [Read more…]

Badgers land pair of recruits for 2021 class

September 30, 2019 By Bill Scott

Greg Gard

The Wisconsin men’s basketball program secured commitments from a pair of players for the 2021 recruiting class over the weekend.

Greg Gard received oral commitments from 6’1 point guard Chucky Hepburn from Bellevue West High School in Nebraksa and 6’7 forward Matthew Mors from Yankton High School in South Dakota.  Both players paid a visit to the UW campus this past weekend.

Hepburn chose Wisconsin over Nebraska, Creighton and Minnesota, while Mors chose the Badgers over Iowa, Iowa State, Nebraska, Creighton, Colorado and TCU.

Mors and Hepburn join power forward Chris Hodges of Schaumburg, Illinois in Wisconsin’s 2021 class.

Hepburn was a first-team all-state pick last season, averaging 18.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.4 steals a game.

Mors moved up to the high school varsity team as a seventh grader.  He averaged more than 20 points a game as an eighth-grader and was a second-team all-state pick.  He helped his school win a state title as a freshman and was named the Gatorade Player of the year in the state as a sophomore.

Badgers land pair of targets for 2020 class

June 16, 2019 By Bill Scott

After taking a number of hits on the recruiting trail, Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Greg Gard got some good news over the weekend.

The Badgers landed one of their top 2020 targets when La Crosse Central G/F Jonathan Davis gave Wisconsin a verbal commitment on Saturday.  The Badgers also received a commitment from his twin brother Jordan.

Jonathan Davis was targeted by the Badgers nearly two years ago and had other offers from DePaul, Iowa, Marquette, Minnesota and West Virginia among others.

The Badgers offered Jordan Davis earlier this month.  He held offers from both Green Bay and Milwaukee.

The Davis twins are the second and third commits to the Badgers 2020 recruiting class, joining Detroit point guard Lorne Bowman.  Wisconsin still has one scholarship open and the Badgers are holding it for Nicolet high school’s five-star prospect Jalen Johnson.  The Badgers are among the final four schools still in the running for Johnson.

March 26, 2019 By Bill Scott

Tai Strickland

Wisconsin Badger freshman point guard Tai Strickland is leaving the men’s basketball program after just one season.

Strickland made the announcement via twitter today.

“Thank you to my teammates, my brothers, for everything y’all have done for me,” Strickland twitted.  “I’ll always root for your success.  I also want to thank Coach Gard and staff for giving me this opportunity, but at this time I have decided to transfer from Wisconsin and continue my career elsewhere.”

Strickland appeared in 16 games for the Badgers, averaging just 1.8 points in a very limited role.  The freshman guard is from Tampa, Florida.

Wisconsin is back in control in chase for Big Ten double bye

March 4, 2019 By Bill Scott

Greg Gard

A week ago, fourth place in the Big Ten Conference and the double-bye in the Conference Tournament that went along with it, seemed like a pipe dream for the Wisconsin Badgers.  Fast forward one week and the Badgers are back in control.

With Maryland losing to Penn State and then Sunday afternoon (69-62) to Michigan and the Badgers 61-57 win over Penn State on Saturday, Wisconsin (20-9, 12-6 Big Ten) has a half game lead on the Terrapins (21-9, 12-7).

As the Big Ten heads into the final week of the regular season, the Badgers have two games left.  They host Iowa (21-8, 10-8) on Thursday and finishes out at Ohio State (18-11, 8-10) on Sunday.  Maryland has one game left, a home game against Minnesota (18-11, 8-10) on Friday.

Greg Gard’s Badgers have a handful of different ways to secure the four-spot in the Big Ten regular season race, but the sure way is to win both its remaining games, which would give them the fourth spot outright.

Badgers miss chances on the road, fall in OT

February 27, 2019 By Bill Scott

Tuesday’s Big Ten game between the Badgers and Hoosiers in Bloomington was like a trip to the dentist.  It was painful to watch and seemed at times like nobody really wanted the win.

But when the dust settled, it was the Hoosiers that ended their five-game losing streak, knocking off the Badgers 75-73 in double overtime.

Freshman Romeo Langford’s driving layup in the final second gave the Hoosiers the victory, just their second since January 3rd.

Langford’s game winner came after D’Mitrik Trice hit three free throws with 9.6 seconds left to tie the game 73-73.

The Badgers (19-9, 11-6 Big Ten) hit just 13 of 25 free throws, including just 5 of 11 in the second overtime.  They missed a chance to tie Maryland (21-7, 12-5) for fourth place in the Big Ten.  Instead, they’re a full game back with three to play.

Maryland faces Penn State on Wednesday night.  The Nittany Lions are in Madison to face the Badgers on Saturday. [Read more…]
