Green Bay’s Sykes repeats as HL Player of the Year

Green Bay Phoenix senior guard Keifer Sykes is the Horizon League Player of the Year for the second-straight season.

Sykes becomes the first player since Detroit’s Rashad Phillips in 2000-01 to win back-to-back player of the year awards and the fifth player in the league’s history to win player of the year two or more times.  Sykes joins Tony Bennett (1990-91, 1991-92) as the only players in Green Bay’s Division 1 history to be named the conference player of the year twice.

For the second straight season, media members, head coaches and sports information directors voted Sykes as the top player in the league.  He was also voted All-Horizon League for the third time in his career. [Read more…]

Mays scores career high 34 in Green Bay victory (AUDIO)

Senior forward Greg Mays had a career high 34 points, 26 of the 34 by halftime to lead the Green Bay Phoenix to a
96-76 Horizon League victory over visiting Detroit (12-17, 5-9 HL) at the Resch Center.

Mays hit 8-of-12 field goal attempts and 10-of-12 at the free throw line in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 11-straight points during a 16-3 run to turn a 31-31 tie into a 47-34 lead at the half.  He tied the Resch Center record for points in a half. [Read more…]

Green Bay battles Valparaiso for 1st place in Horizon League

Green Bay and Valparaiso are two of the three teams tied for the Horizon League lead.  The Phoenix and Crusaders will hook up tonight in a first place battle in Indiana.  The two teams share first place with Cleveland State entering play tonight.

Green Bay won the first matchup 51-50 on January 23 in Green Bay.  The Phoenix held the Crusaders to 18.5% shooting from the field in the second half to rally from a 10-point first half deficit to pull out the win.  Senior forward Greg Mays scored the eventual game-winning basket on a runner with 1:41 to play [Read more…]

Sykes buries game winner for Green Bay

Senior Keifer Sykes scored all 11 of his points in the second half, including the game winning jumper with 17-seconds left to play, leading the Green Bay Phoenix to a 63-62 win over the Youngstown State Penguins in Youngstown, Ohio.

Sykes spent much of the first half in the locker room, getting stitched up after receiving a cut above his eye.

Green Bay trailed 58-48 with 8:14 left to play, but the Phoenix defense held YSU to only four points and outscored the Penguins 15-4 to end the game. [Read more…]

Phoenix rebound to win at Wright State

Green Bay Phoenix logo 2The Green Bay Phoenix rebounded from Saturday’s loss at Cleveland State to knock off Wright State 71-58 in men’s Horizon League basketball action at the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio.

It’s the 16th straight win for the Phoenix after suffering a regular-season defeat.

Green Bay improved to 7-2 in Horizon League play, moving back into a first-place tie with Cleveland State and Valparaiso with seven games left to play.

Senior forward Greg mays and freshman guard Daeshon Francis led five Phoenix players in double figures with 14-points each.

Green Bay returns to Horizon League play Thursday night at home against rival Milwaukee.

Green Bay Phoenix edge Valparaiso (AUDIO)

Greg Mays jumper with 1:43 left to play would turn out to be the games final points.  The Green Bay Phoenix survived from there, holding off the Crusaders of Valparaiso, 51-50 on Friday night at the Resch Center in Green Bay.

The Crusaders (18-4, 5-2 Horizon League) missed three shots down the stretch that would have given them the lead.

Keifer Sykes and Alfonzo McKinnie scored 11 points each to lead the Phoenix (17-4, 6-1).  It’s the 10th straight win (10-0) at home for Green Bay this season.

At 6-1, the Phoenix stay in first place in the Horizon League standings, tied with Cleveland State.  The Vikings knocked off Detroit 70-66.  In that contest, Trey Lewis poured in 30 points and the host Vikings (12-9, 6-1) erased a nine-point deficit in the second half to down the Titans 10-11, 3-3).

Green Bay and Cleveland State will play the first of their 2-game series in Cleveland on Saturday, Jan. 31st.

Green Bay Phoenix wins 9th straight at home (Video)

(VGreg Mays scored 20 points and Keifer Sykes added 19 points and nine assists to lead the Green Bay Phoenix to a 78-55 win over Illinois-Chicago at the Resch Center on Tuesday night.  It’s the 9th straight home court victory for Green Bay.

Sykes has now scored in double figures in 32 straight Horizon League games and in 59 of the last 61.

Mays hit 10 of 15 shots from the field.  Two of the ten were dunks, giving him 100 dunks in his Phoenix career.

Sykes season high nine assists moved him past Frank Nardi into fourth place on the schools all-time list with 474.  The program’s all-time leader in free throws made 11 of 13 to reach 500 in his career (509).

The Phoenix ( 16-4, 5-1 HL) shot 50.9% from the field for the game and held UIC to 36.5% and 1 of 10 three-pointers.

Green Bay welcomes Valparaiso (18-3, 5-1) to the Resch Center on Friday in a battle for first place in the Horizon League.

Green Bay upset in Oakland

Green Bay Phoenix logo 2The Green Bay Phoenix saw their 5-game win streak come to an end on Thursday night, falling to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies 69-66 in overtime.

Senior Keifer Sykes led four Green Bay players in double figures with a team-high 19 points, but missed key moments due to foul trouble after two second-half charges.

Oakland (6-12, 2-2 HL) missed a shot with 14 seconds left, giving the Phoenix a chance to tie the game.  But Green Bay (14-4, 3-1) couldn’t answer when Sykes missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with five seconds left.

Greg Mays added 15 points, Carrington Love 12 and Jordan Fouse had 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals for the Phoenix.

Green Bay returns to action Saturday afternoon at Detroit.

Green Bay Phoenix extends win streak to 5

Green Bay Phoenix logo 2The Green Bay Phoenix extended their winning streak to five games and remained perfect at home for the season, knocking off Youngstown State (9-10, 0-4 HL) 82-67 on Sunday night.

Keifer Sykes led the charge for the Phoenix with 24 points and senior forward Greg Mays finished one point shy of his career high 24 points.  Mays had 23 points, eight rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots in his best performance of the season.

Sykes leads Green Bay past Milwaukee

Senior guard Keifer Sykes scored 22 of his career-high 34 points in the first half as the Green Bay Phoenix (13-3, 2-0 HL) built a 20-point lead at halftime and cruised to a 79-63 win over the Milwaukee Panthers in Horizon League play Friday night at UWM Panther Arena.

Sykes hit 13 of 20 shots on the night, including 5 of 7 from three-point range.  It matched the 34 points he scored against the Panthers in a 93-86 overtime victory on Jan. 12, 2014 in Milwaukee.

Green Bay shot 56.7% from the field (17-30) in the first half.  Milwaukee hit just 34.8% (8-23).

Greg Mays finished with a double-double for the Phoenix (16 points and 11 rebounds), and junior Carrington Love added 15 points for Green Bay.  The Phoenix also got eight points, seven rebounds, four blocks and three steals from junior Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.).

The Panthers (5-12, 0-3) dropped their sixth in a row.  They were led by Steve McWhorter’s 21 points and Akeem Springs 18 points.

Green Bay returns home to host Youngstown State on Sunday evening (7pm) at the Resch Center.
